Longitudinal evaluation of lymphatic reconstruction: Ten-year practice and outcome data from a single institution.

Lymphedema (LE) is a chronic condition, caused by a lymphatic system dysfunction, with no definitive cure. Conservative treatment is the standard of care, but lymphatic reconstructive surgery has demonstrated promising results. After performing the first lymphatic surgery procedure in Switzerland in 2015, we conducted a retrospective cohort study evaluating 10 years of lymphatic reconstruction performed at the Department of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the University Hospital Zurich between 2015 and 2024. During this time, the key changes in techniques included a shift from predominantl

Immune parameters monitored during the production period of laying hens managed with or without single-dose vaccination against erysipelas.

BACKGROUND: Erysipelas, caused by infection with Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae (ER), is an emerging disease in non-cage housed laying hens. According to Swedish field experience outbreaks seem more common in older flocks and may also occur in flocks vaccinated against erysipelas. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess single-dose vaccination outcome in laying hens with respect to antibody titres to ER and to monitor selected immune parameters to identify putative risk factors for erysipelas. Blood samples were collected from laying hen flocks at 30, 50 and 75 weeks of age. At each time poin

Skin and Soft Tissue Infections.

Skin and soft tissue infections range from mild bacterial infections of the dermis and lymphatic system, such as erysipelas, to rapidly spreading necrotizing fasciitis. Mild infections are often caused by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species, whereas more severe infections are often polymicrobial and involve anaerobic bacteria. Purulent skin infections are more likely to be caused by methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA). Nasal polymerase chain reaction testing for MRSA may be helpful for skin infections associated with a wound, but it cannot rule out MRSA as t

Discontinuing Colchicine in Pediatric Familial Mediterranean Fever: Real-Life Experience from a Long-Term Follow-Up Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Colchicine is the cornerstone of treatment in familial Mediterranean fever and is generally recommended as lifelong therapy. However, a subset of pediatric patients may experience a milder disease course, raising questions about the feasibility and safety of colchicine discontinuation. Evidence guiding this decision remains limited, and no consensus exists on patient selection criteria or monitoring strategies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate long-term outcomes after colchicine discontinuation in a large pediatric familial Mediterranean fever cohort and to i

Foot mycoses - treatment with over-the-counter preparations based on clinical recommendations.

Tinea pedis (athlete's foot) is a superficial fungal skin infection caused by dermatophytes, most commonly the anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum. Clinically, it is characterized mainly by scaling, erythema, and fissure formation, and it may present in three primary forms: interdigital, plantar, and vesiculobullous. The infection is often accompanied by mild pruritus; when fissures develop, burning and pain may also occur. Maceration, fissures, and desquamation of the stratum corneum in the interdigital spaces may serve as entry points for β-haemolytic streptococci, thereby increa

Reported Penicillin Allergy Affects the Length of Hospital Stay in Patients with Erysipelas.

Patients with a reported penicillin allergy are often treated with less effective antibiotics. This study examined the impact of anamnestic penicillin allergy on the length of hospital stay in patients with erysipelas, a condition for which penicillin is considered the first-line therapy and addresses the question: Does anamnestic penicillin allergy directly affect the length of hospital stay in patients with erysipelas? This retrospective analysis included patients who were admitted to the University Medical Center Regensburg for the treatment of erysipelas. The data analysed were sex, age at

Management and prevention of lower leg cellulitis: a survey assessing practice variation and equipoise among Australasian clinicians in preparation for a randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb cellulitis accounts for 1.5%-2% of visits to Australasian emergency departments. Antibiotics are considered the cornerstone of management, but despite prioritisation by consumers, acute interventions to manage pain and inflammation and cellulitis recurrence prevention strategies remain understudied beyond small pilot trials. AIMS: We aimed to assess clinicians' current practices, areas of clinical uncertainty and willingness to randomise patients to interventions, including demarcation lines, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, compression t
