Editorial: The Early Phenotype of Bipolar Disorder?

In patients with bipolar disorder (BD), there is often a substantial delay before diagnosis and accurate treatment initiation. This delay is associated with a poorer outcome and stresses the importance of early recognition. As BD runs in families, longitudinal studies on children of parents with BD can provide information on the onset and early trajectories of BD. In the past 3 decades, a number of longitudinal studies on offspring of parents with BD have been initiated. With a typical age of onset in late adolescence, most of these studies started in adolescence. Thus far, these studies have

The spread of depressive disorders is extra high nowadays. How often do German children and adolescents show signs of common mental health problems? Results from different methodological approaches--a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Child and adolescent mental health problems are ubiquitous and burdensome. Their impact on functional disability, the high rates of accompanying medical illnesses and the potential to last until adulthood make them a major public health issue. While methodological factors cause variability of the results from epidemiological studies, there is a lack of prevalence rates of mental health problems in children and adolescents according to ICD-10 criteria from nationally representative samples. International findings suggest only a small proportion of children with function impairing me

[The stroke variables assessment as a prognostic factor for post-stroke depression with the emphasis on the cerebral SPECT regional blood flow asymmetry].

AIM: The aim of this paper was to assess the risk for depression in a 6-month-long post stroke follow up period as related to the stroke variables (i.e. stroke localisation, haemodynamic parameters). METHOD: The stroke localisation was determined with CT and/or MRI. Subsequently all the examined individuals underwent SPECT examination. The follow up examinations were performed by the consultant psychiatrist in 6, 12 and 24 weeks subsequent to the stroke episode. The depressive episode diagnosis was established on the basis of ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: Only right-handed patients (4

Severity of depressive episodes according to ICD-10: prediction of risk of relapse and suicide.

BACKGROUND: The ICD-10 categorisation of severity of depression into mild, moderate and severe depressive episodes has not been validated. AIMS: To validate the ICD-10 categorisation of severity of depression by estimating its predictive ability on the course of illness and suicidal outcome. METHOD: All psychiatric in-patients in Denmark who had received a diagnosis of a single depressive episode at their first discharge between 1994 and 1999 were identified. The risk of relapse and the risk of suicide were compared for patients discharged with an ICD-10 diagnosis of a single mild, moderate

[Use of cypramil in the treatment of depression in patients with gastrointestinal cancer].

Depressive state in cancer patients is known to meet the criteria of mild depressive episode (F33.0) according to ICD-10. In the earlier stages of the disease and after successful treatment, depressive symptoms are usually combined with anxiety and obsessive fear, moderate appearances of ideator and motor inhibition, with permanent presence of asthenic symptoms. Once the disease is getting severer and the treatment is less successful, asthenia acquires hyposthenic features, with symptoms of apathy and dysphoria being attached. Cypramil was shown to be an effective medication in the treatment o

The objective of the present study was to determine the reliability of the Brazilian version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview 2.1 (CIDI 2.1) in clinical psychiatry. The CIDI 2.1 was translated into Portuguese using WHO guidelines and reliability was studied using the inter-rater reliability method. The study sample consisted of 186 subjects from psychiatric hospitals and clinics, primary care centers and community services. The interviewers consisted of a group of 13 lay and three non-lay interviewers submitted to the CIDI training. The average interview time was 2 h and 30

Depression in primary care. 2: general practitioners' recognition of major depression in elderly patients.

BACKGROUND: It is important that serious depressive illness be recognized and treated appropriately by primary care practitioners. This and the preceding article in this issue examine (a) factors responsible for older patients' decision to report depressive symptoms to their doctor and (b) general practitioners' (GPs') recognition of depression when it was present. METHODS: A survey was conducted of a stratified sample of 1,021 patients aged 70+ years of 30 GPs in Melbourne, Australia, using the Canberra Interview for the Elderly, which generates rigorous ICD-10 research diagnoses. RESULTS:

'Everybody looks at my pubic bone'--a case report of an adolescent patient with body dysmorphic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) was described for the first time more than 100 years ago, but it is still unknown to many clinicians. Although the onset usually occurs during adolescence, BDD has received little attention in the adolescent psychiatric literature. METHOD: The case and treatment of a 16-year-old female patient is described. RESULTS: The patient, suffering from the overvalued belief of a dislocated pubic bone, a comorbid mild depressive episode, BDD associated rituals and social avoidance, was treated successfully with a combination of exposure and response prevention

Demographic/socioeconomic factors in mental disorders associated with tuberculosis in southwest Nigeria.

In spite of the high prevalence of tuberculosis worldwide, there are few studies on its psychiatric complications. The mental state of 53 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis seen in a Nigerian chest clinic was examined using the 30-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-30), the Present State Examination (PSE), and a clinical evaluation based on the International Classification of Disease, tenth edition (ICD-10). Results were compared with two comparison groups: (1) a group of 20 long-stay orthopedic patients with lower limb fractures; and (2) a group of 20 apparently healthy controls. The so
