Personality changes during antidepressant treatment.

OBJECTIVES: We have investigated the changes of Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) dimensions of personality in outpatients during 6 months of antidepressant treatment. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 30 outpatients were treated for mild or moderate depressive episode, current mild or moderate episode of reccurent depressive disorder or mixed anxiety and depressive disorder (ICD-10). The intensity of depression was assessed by the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) at the beginning of treatment and then after the 1st, 3rd and 6th month of treatment. The TCI dimensions were assesse

Depression and suicidality in the adolescents in Osijek, Croatia.

Mood disorders in children and adolescents and their treatments have received increasing attention and clinical investigation over the last few decades. The core features of mood disorders are essentially the same across the life span. Developmental level, however, appears to influence the expression of certain mood symptoms with greater frequency than other within the framework of depressive disorders. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in children between the ages of 10 and 15 years and the third leading cause of death among the adolescents and young adults 15-25 years. In this art

Dissecting the determinants of depressive disorders outcome: an in depth analysis of two clinical cases.

Clinicians face everyday the complexity of depression. Available pharmacotherapies and psychotherapies improve patients suffering in a large part of subjects, however up to half of patients do not respond to treatment. Clinicians may forecast to a good extent if a given patient will respond or not, based on a number of data and sensations that emerge from face to face assessment. Conversely, clinical predictors of non response emerging from literature are largely unsatisfactory. Here we try to fill this gap, suggesting a comprehensive assessment of patients that may overcome the limitation of

Placebo controlled continuation treatment with Hypericum extract WS 5570 after recovery from a mild or moderate depressive episode.

Patients suffering from an acute episode of mild to moderate major depression and who had been treated successfully with Hypericum perforatum extract WS 5570 in doses of 600 mg/day or 1200 mg/day or with placebo for 6 weeks in a multi-centre, double-blind, randomized clinical trial, were asked to take part in a continuation treatment. Those participants with a HAMD total score decrease > or =50% during acute treatment were eligible for 4 months of double-blind continuation treatment with the same dose regimen. In total, 69, 68 and 24 (WS 5570 600 mg/day, 1200 mg/day and placebo) patients enter

[The stroke variables assessment as a prognostic factor for post-stroke depression with the emphasis on the cerebral SPECT regional blood flow asymmetry].

AIM: The aim of this paper was to assess the risk for depression in a 6-month-long post stroke follow up period as related to the stroke variables (i.e. stroke localisation, haemodynamic parameters). METHOD: The stroke localisation was determined with CT and/or MRI. Subsequently all the examined individuals underwent SPECT examination. The follow up examinations were performed by the consultant psychiatrist in 6, 12 and 24 weeks subsequent to the stroke episode. The depressive episode diagnosis was established on the basis of ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: Only right-handed patients (4

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder in a patient with comorbid epilepsy.

Whether eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) causes reactivation of epilepsy is as yet unclear. A 34-year-old woman was treated in an inpatient multimodal psychotherapeutic setting with EMDR for PTSD resulting from sexual harassment and for a moderate depressive episode. She had been diagnosed with idiopathic generalized absence epilepsy in childhood, but had experienced no seizures under lamotrigine medication since 1999. After the second EMDR session, clinical seizures in the form of absences occurred, and were validated by el

[Pirasidol treatment of depression in elderly patients with somatic diseases].

AIM: To study efficacy and tolerance of pirasidol in elderly patients with somatic diseases and depression. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was made in 30 patients over 55 years of age with a mild or moderate depressive episode. The efficacy of a 6 week treatment with pirasidol was assessed by somatic examination, Hamilton depressive scale (17 points), General Clinical Impression Scale, 5-score subjective state scale. RESULTS: Pirasidol treatment led to a 36% decrease in intake of drugs. The patients took much lower doses of non-narcotic analgetics, nitroglycerine, tranquilizers, enzymatic m

Severity of depressive episodes according to ICD-10: prediction of risk of relapse and suicide.

BACKGROUND: The ICD-10 categorisation of severity of depression into mild, moderate and severe depressive episodes has not been validated. AIMS: To validate the ICD-10 categorisation of severity of depression by estimating its predictive ability on the course of illness and suicidal outcome. METHOD: All psychiatric in-patients in Denmark who had received a diagnosis of a single depressive episode at their first discharge between 1994 and 1999 were identified. The risk of relapse and the risk of suicide were compared for patients discharged with an ICD-10 diagnosis of a single mild, moderate

The prevalence of depression among Australian nursing home residents: results using draft ICD-10 and DSM-III-R criteria.

The aims of this study were, first, to estimate the prevalence of depressive disorders in Australian nursing home residents using international diagnostic criteria, and second, to explore environmental determinants of such disorders. Residents of 24 nursing homes were surveyed using the Canberra Interview for the Elderly (CIE) and a range of environmental measures was also taken. Of 323 residents who were screened for cognitive impairment, 165 (51%) scored 18 or above on the Mini-Mental State Examination (Folstein et al. 1975), and were interviewed with the CIE. According to DSM-III-R criteria
