Urinary incontinence (UI) is an adverse effect associated with clozapine treatment. Several management options are available, including adjuvant medication. We describe the case of a woman in her 50s with a history of major depressive disorder and a current severe depressive episode with psychotic symptoms. The case is discussed, and a review of the relevant literature is presented, examining the use of cariprazine in the management of clozapine-induced UI. Cariprazine was initiated as a first-line treatment, followed by clozapine several months later. Following a reduction in the dose of cari

The climate crisis with its already obvious effects in many areas of life, e. g. heat waves, flood disasters, etc., is becoming increasingly important in its consequences for health, media presentation and public perception. Based on the fact that symptoms of mental illness are dependent on the interplay of socio-cultural and biographical factors in terms of their content, this casuistry describes the course of treatment of a 59-year-old man with a severe depressive episode and the delusional conviction that the landscape of the Allgäu will turn into a landscape like the Sahel due to the clima

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder and associated mood syndromes are amongst the most common psychiatric disorders. To date, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is considered the most effective short-term treatment for patients with severe or treatment-resistant depression. In clinical practice, there is considerable variation in the ECT dosing schedule, with the number of sessions typically ranging from 6 to 12, with early antidepressant effects being predictive of increased positive outcomes. We describe here an unusual case of a female patient with severe depression who did not respond to EC

BACKGROUND There have been few studies published on the prevalence of severe depressive episode in people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) or its role in adherence to dietary recommendations. We examined the Polish National Health Fund (NFZ) database estimates of all medical visits from 2010 to 2017 to determine the trend and the epidemiology of severe depressive episode in T2DM. MATERIAL AND METHODS The NFZ database was used. We defined the T2DM group diagnosed with both T2DM and severe depressive episode according to the ICD-10 codes. The annual prevalence of severe depressive episode was estimat

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotic drug use among children and adolescents is increasing, and there is growing concern about off-label use and adverse effects. The present study aims to investigate the incidence, psychiatric co-morbidity and pharmacological treatment of severe mental disorder in Norwegian children and adolescents.
METHODS: We obtained data on mental disorders from the Norwegian Patient Registry on 0-18 year olds who during 2009-2011 were diagnosed for the first time with schizophrenia-like disorder (International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision codes F20-F29), bipolar disord

This article is reporting about a spontaneous occurred catatonic syndrome in a 52 years old female patients with no prior psychiatric illness record. The catatonia followed a severe depressive episode with psychotic symptoms. At the beginning additionally to the catatonic-symptoms severe disorientation and memory disturbances were prominent in a way it can be seen in neurodegenerative diseases like Lewy-Body-Dementia and Creutzfeldt-Jacob-Disease. The patient didn't respond on any medication or showed severe side-effects which led to discontinue the medication. After applying widespread somati

There is limited literature on the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with recent myocardial infarction and in those with reduced cardiac output. In this report, we describe the safe use of ECT in a 70-year-male suffering from severe depressive episode with psychotic symptoms. He had a history of poor response to adequate pharmacotherapy and had suffered from myocardial infraction (MI), about 3 weeks prior to admission to the psychiatric unit. In view of severe depression associated with marked anxiety, agitation, psychotic symptoms, and poor food intake he was started on ECT a

AIM: This study was designed to examine the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity and its psychosocial and psychopathological correlates in patients with pemphigus in comparison to those with psoriasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with pemphigus (n=50), group matched for demography, with those with psoriasis (n=30), and healthy controls (n=30), were subjected to cross-sectional assessment for duration, severity, and impact of dermatological disorder, attitude to appearance, social support, coping strategies, disability, quality of life, and psychiatric morbidity and diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Because clinical and biologic research and optimal clinical practice require stability of diagnoses over time, we determined stability of ICD-10 psychotic disorder diagnoses and sought predictors of diagnostic instability.
METHOD: Patients from the McLean-Harvard International First-Episode Project, conducted from 1989 to 2003, who were hospitalized for first psychotic illnesses (N = 500) were diagnosed by ICD-10 criteria at baseline and 24 months, on the basis of extensive prospective assessments, to evaluate the longitudinal stability of specific categorical diagnoses and predict

The prevalence of depressive disorders in hypothyroidism is the subject of long-term studies and controversies. The studies on big populations appear to confirm a substantially higher prevalence rate of depression in patients diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Considering interdependence between depression and hypothyroidism the possibility of coincidence of the two disorders cannot be forgotten. The aim of the work is a case of late diagnosed hypothyroidism in the course of which a severe depressive episode with psychotic symptoms occurred. A female patient, aged 39, commenced outpatient psychiat

The neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare complication of antipsychotic therapy. We report on a 65-year-old patient who was treated with haloperidol, diazepam and mirtazapin because of a severe depressive episode with psychotic symptoms. He exhibited most of the signs and symptoms characteristic of NMS, e.g.: hyperthermia, rigidity, elevated creatine phosphokinase, leukocytosis, elevated liver enzymes, reduced consciousness and autonomic nervous system disturbances. A secondary pneumonia was diagnosed 2 days after the onset of the NMS, which might have been due to chest wall rigidity.
