An Infected Dog Bite With Neisseria animaloris and Neisseria canis Causing Compartment Syndrome, Necrotizing Fasciitis and Gas Gangrene: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Neisseria animaloris and Neisseria canis are rare, zoologic microorganisms that are found in the oral and nasal cavities of felines and canines. Though the pathogenicity of Neisseria meningitis and gonorrhea are common, N. canis and animaloris have been far less documented to cause infections in humans and moreover it is exceedingly rare to cause necrotizing fasciitis and gas gangrene. We report the first successful surgical treatment of a 46-year-old female with a case of necrotizing fasciitis, compartment syndrome, and gas formation formed from a bacterial colony involving Neisseria animalor

Gas necrosis and sepsis due to recreational ketamine use.

Although ketamine is an FDA-approved drug, its mechanism of action is not fully understood. Currently, there is an increase in its recreational use, causing irreparable social and physical damage. We report the case of a musician who developed sepsis due to gas necrosis in his arm after using veterinary ketamine purchased via the internet. Despite the amputation recommendation, it was possible to save the arm and preserve motor and sensory function. The scientific community, as well as the police and the government, must ponder the prescription, efficacy and safety of ketamine for medical trea

The potential application of isoxanthohumol in inhibiting Clostridium perfringens infection by targeting the type IV pili.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is an important zoonotic pathogen. The diseases such as necrotic enteritis (NE), enterotoxemia, gas gangrene and food poisoning caused by its infection seriously threaten the lives of both humans and animals. However, under the severe situation of antibiotic resistance, the development of new antibacterial strategies or drugs deserves great attention. RESULTS: In this study, we selected the virulence factor Type IV pili (TFP) of C. perfringens as the target for drug screening. The gliding motility, biofilm formation, cell adhesion and antib

The contribution of metagenomic next-generation sequencing to a diagnosis of gas-producing Fusobacterium-induced septic hip arthritis: A case report.

Pyogenic arthritis with gas gangrene triggered by intra-articular steroid injections can occasionally result in fatal complications. Clostridium perfringens is typically the causative pathogen, with infections caused by Fusobacterium species being relatively rare. Fusobacterium species are known to cause pyogenic infections, but due to their extreme sensitivity to oxygen, they can be difficult to detect with traditional culture methods. Recently, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has gained attention as an alternative diagnostic tool to traditional culture, enabling rapid identific

In vitro competition with Bifidobacterium strains impairs potentially pathogenic growth of Clostridium perfringens on 2'-fucosyllactose.

Fortifying infant formula with human milk oligosaccharides, such as 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL), is a global trend. Previous studies have shown the inability of pathogenic gut microbes to utilize 2'-FL. However, the present study demonstrates that the type strain (JCM 1290T) of Clostridium perfringens, a pathobiont species often more prevalent and abundant in the feces of C-section-delivered infants, exhibits potentially pathogenic growth on 2'-FL. The expression of genes for α-toxin, an activator of NLRP3 inflammasome, and ethanolamine ammonia-lyase, a factor responsible for the progression of

Clostridium septicum-associated myonecrosis in a dog: case report.

Necrotizing soft tissue diseases are severe, rapidly progressive infections characterized by tissue destruction and toxemia, often leading to death. Although common in livestock, myonecrosis caused by toxinogenic clostridial species is rarely reported in dogs. This study reports a case of myonecrosis in a male mongrel dog attacked by stray dogs, which subsequently developed a Clostridium septicum infection. The dog, prostrate and in contact with the ground, was brought for treatment two days post-attack, presenting multiple bite wounds, particularly on the pelvic limbs and scrotum, and a scrot

Case report on Clostridium perfringens-induced gas gangrene following an intramuscular injection: A stark reminder of injection-associated risks.

INTRODUCTION: This case reports Clostridium perfringens-induced gas gangrene and compartment syndrome after an intramuscular NSAID injection in an immunocompetent patient, an uncommon occurrence without typical risk factors. Despite limited access to advanced wound care, prompt surgical debridement, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and intensive support ensured survival. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old male developed severe pain, blackish skin discoloration, and rapidly progressing swelling of the right deltoid after receiving an intramuscular diclofenac injection. Within 24-30 h, he exhibited se

BrnQ Branched-Chain Amino Acid Transporters Influence Toxin Production by, but Not Growth of, Clostridium perfringens Type A Strain ATCC3624.

By producing alpha toxin (PLC) and perfringolysin O (PFO), Clostridium perfringens type A strains are the most common cause of traumatic gas gangrene. C. perfringens cannot synthesize branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), so BCAA transporters are essential for C. perfringens growth and survival. C. perfringens type A strain ATCC3624 encodes the BrnQ1, BrnQ2, and BrnQ3 BCAA transporters. RT-PCR analyses showed that, with increasing culture time in TY broth, brnQ2 and brnQ3 expression levels remained stable but brnQ1 expression levels declined. Single null mutants unable to produce one of the BrnQ

The Role of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Management of Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection.

Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) is a life-threatening, high morbidity pathology that requires aggressive, multidisciplinary management. Surgery and antibiotic administration are core components of treatment. Adjunctive incorporation of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can further enhance treatment and recovery. Benefit is achieved through multiple effects brought about by increase of local and systemic oxygen tension. Direct effects include bacteriostasis, disruption of bacterial toxin production, and attenuation of inflammation. Indirect benefits include demarcation of viable tissue

Core outcome set for research in necrotising soft tissue infection patients: an international, multidisciplinary, modified Delphi consensus study.

INTRODUCTION: Necrotising soft tissue infections (NSTI) are serious infections associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Heterogeneity of outcome reporting in the NSTI literature precludes the synthesis of high-quality evidence. There is substantial interest in studying the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen treatment as an adjunctive treatment in NSTI. The aim of this study was to develop a set of core outcome measures for future trials evaluating interventions for NSTI. METHODS: A modified Delphi consensus method was used to conduct a three-round survey of a diverse panel of clinicia

Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen in Patients with Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections: A Scandinavian Multicenter, Prospective, Observational Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment is regularly used as adjuvant treatment in patients with necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTI). Several observational studies have suggested an association between hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment and improved survival in patients with necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs); however, the evidence remains inconclusive. Most patients with NSTI are severely ill, having sepsis or septic shock, and requiring mechanical ventilation and inotropic support in an intensive care unit (ICU). Although recent data suggest that the beneficial effect

Clostridium septicum Gas Gangrene Complicated by Cerebral Air Embolism.

Clostridium septicum (C. septicum) is a rare cause of necrotizing soft tissue infection and is most commonly associated with spontaneous infections in patients with underlying gastrointestinal pathology. In rare cases, it can affect other organs or cause air embolism. We report the case of an 85-year-old man with diabetes mellitus who initially presented with fever and later developed inflammatory signs in the left upper limb and chest wall. CT revealed signs of gas gangrene in these locations. Due to the onset of prostration and motor aphasia, a brain CT scan was performed and showed an area

Clostridial Myonecrosis (Gas Gangrene).

Clostridial myositis and myonecrosis, or gas gangrene, is an acute, rapidly progressive, non-pyogenic, invasive clostridial infection of the muscle tissue characterized by profound toxemia, extensive edema, massive death of tissue, and a variable degree of gas production [1-2]. Gas gangrene is either an endogenous infection caused by contamination from a clostridial focus in the body (spontaneous, atraumatic) or an exogenous infection found mostly in patients with compound and/or complicated fractures with extensive soft tissue injuries after trauma (non-spontaneous, traumatic). The onset of g
