A Critical Review of Postbiotics as Promising Novel Therapeutic Agents for Clostridial Infections.

Clostridial infections, known for their severity and rapid progression, present significant challenges in both clinical and veterinary fields. These bacteria, which can survive without oxygen and produce protective spores, cause many diseases, ranging from simple gastrointestinal disorders to severe and potentially fatal infections including botulism, tetanus, and gas gangrene. The rising occurrence of antibiotic-resistant strains and the repetitive character of some Clostridial illnesses, including Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI), highlight the immediate need for alternate treatment

An Unusual Fatal Outcome of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: A Case Report.

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) and Klebsiella oxytoca (K. oxytoca) are pathogenic human bacteria. Clostridium perfringens sepsis with intravascular hemolysis is a catastrophic process with an extremely high mortality rate (70 to 100%). A 74-year-old male submitted to an elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy due to cholelithiasis and develops severe abdominal pain only 10 hours after being discharged from hospital. He was admitted to the emergency department with associated jaundice, fever, and hematuria. On arrival, his hemoglobin level was 9.2 g/dL but fell to 3.4g/dL within two hou

Gas in the myocardium: a fatal presentation of Clostridium perfringens: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium perfringens is a well-known cause of gas gangrene with a very high mortality rate. Multiple cases of internal organs have been reported in the literature; however, non-traumatic spontaneous gas gangrene due to C. perfringens with solely cardiac involvement in a patient without any risk factors has not been reported before. CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old male presented to the emergency department with chest pain and exertional dyspnoea for three days. The patient was haemodynamically stable initially, and the physical examination was unremarkable. Initial laboratory workup

Clostridium perfringens gas gangrene caused by closed abdominal injury: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) gas gangrene is a rare infection that has been described in the literature as most frequently occurring in postoperative patients with open trauma. Intra-abdominal gas gangrene caused by C. perfringens infection after closed abdominal injury is extremely rare, difficult to diagnose, and progresses rapidly with high mortality risk. Here, we report a case of C. perfringens infection caused by closed abdominal injury. CASE SUMMARY: A 54-year-old male suffered multiple intestinal tears and necrosis after sustaining an injury caused by

Postpartum clostridial gangrenous metritis in 12 dairy goats in France.

Clostridial infections in goats have been associated frequently with enteric diseases or gas gangrene but very rarely with the reproductive system. We describe here 12 cases of fatal postpartum gangrenous metritis in does associated with infection by several clostridial species. Clinically, these cases were characterized by rapid onset of hyperthermia followed by death after kidding. On postmortem examination, the uteri appeared to be necrotic and were hemorrhagic and edematous. Microscopically, the uteri had diffuse coagulative necrosis, edema, hemorrhage, and fibrinous thrombi with intralesi

Phagocyte extracellular traps formation contributes to host defense against Clostridium perfringens infection.

Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is an important Gram-positive anaerobic spore-forming pathogen that provokes life-threatening gas gangrene and acute enterotoxaemia, although it colonizes as a component of the symbiotic bacteria in humans and animals. However, the mechanisms by which C. perfringens is cleared from the host remains poorly understood, thereby impeding the development of novel strategies for control this infection. Here, we uncover a beneficial effect of extracellular traps (ETs) formation on bacterial killing and clearance by phagocytes. C. perfringens strain ATCC13124,

Clostridium perfringens-Opportunistic Foodborne Pathogen, Its Diversity and Epidemiological Significance.

The C. perfringens species is associated with various environments, such as soils, sewage, and food. However, it is also a component of the gastrointestinal (GI) microflora (i.e., microbiota) of sick and healthy humans and animals. C. perfringens is linked with different systemic and enteric diseases in livestock and humans, such as gas gangrene, food poisoning, non-foodborne diarrhoea, and enterocolitis. The strains of this opportunistic pathogen are known to secrete over 20 identified toxins that are considered its principal virulence factors. C. perfringens belongs to the anaerobic bacteria

Treatment strategies for orbital gas-producing necrotizing fasciitis secondary to odontogenic maxillary sinusitis: Technical notes.

This paper presents treatment strategies for orbital necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in a case of a 33-year-old male diagnosed with orbital NF, which developed after dental root canal treatment. Although orbital NF is rare, it is rapidly progressive and can easily lead to the loss of tissue and visual function, sometimes to a life-threatening extent. Prompt and adequate treatment has been a challenge yet remains quite essential. In addition to the conventional approach to NF, such as immediate antibiotic administration and drainage, orbital NF patients like this case were often treated by incorpora

Recurrent idiopathic pancreatitis complicating as emphysematous pancreatitis and gastroduodenal artery pseudoaneurysm: A rare case report.

Emphysematous pancreatitis (EP) is a rare and potentially fatal condition of the pancreas. It is associated with gas-forming bacteria and is characterized by the presence of gas in or around the pancreas. It is identified by a computed tomography scan of the abdomen. Although predisposing factors are not precisely known, diabetes mellitus, which predisposes to gas gangrene, is seen to be commonly associated with patients of EP. EP being potentially fatal requires immediate management. Surgery is generally indicated in EP. However, EP can also managed conservatively. In our case, the patient de

Autolysin as a fibronectin receptor on the cell surface of Clostridium perfringens.

OBJECTIVE: Clostridium perfringens causes food poisoning and gas gangrene, a serious wound-associated infection. C. perfringens cells adhere to collagen via fibronectin (Fn). We investigated whether the peptidoglycan hydrolase of C. perfringens, i.e., autolysin (Acp), is implicated in Fn binding to C. perfringens cells. METHODS: This study used recombinant Acp fragments, human Fn and knockout mutants (C. perfringens 13 acp::erm and HN13 ΔfbpC ΔfbpD). Ligand blotting, Western blotting analysis, and complementation tests were performed. The Fn-binding activity of each mutant was evaluated by EL

Edwardsiella tarda Causing Fishbone Injury Cellulitis Leading to Sepsis in a Case of Hematological Malignancy-A Rare Report and Review of Literature.

Edwardsiella tarda ( E. tarda ), a gram-negative bacillus, a member of order Enterobacterales , is typically a fish pathogen frequently isolated from fresh and brackish water environments. It is very rarely implicated in human infections such as gastroenteritis (most common), cellulitis, gas gangrene, hepatobiliary infections, peritonitis, empyema, and meningitis. Bacteremia/sepsis caused by E. tarda can be fatal in humans, although very rare (<5%). To date, very few cases of E. tarda sepsis have been reported worldwide including India. We report a rare case of cellulitis caused by E. tarda fo
