Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) type I is an acute subcutaneous tissue infection that can promptly disseminate generating crepitus. If not accurately diagnosed and expeditiously treated, it becomes a life-threatening infection. In this report, we present a 65-year-old man who developed a case of NF after a hemiglossectomy resecting a tumor in the dorsal surface of the tongue. A biopsy was performed, and he was pathologically diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (T2N1M0). The patient underwent preoperative oral cleaning. Right hemiglossectomy was performed by cervical dissection, pull-through styl

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are networks of DNA and various microbicidal proteins released to kill invading microorganisms and prevent their dissemination. However, a NETs excess is detrimental to the host and involved in the pathogenesis of various inflammatory and immunothrombotic diseases. Clostridium perfringens is a widely distributed pathogen associated with several animal and human diseases, that produces many exotoxins, including the phospholipase C (CpPLC), the main virulence factor in gas gangrene. During this disease, CpPLC generates the formation of neutrophil/platelet ag

BACKGROUND: The breast milk bank is a professional organization that collects donor human milk (DHM) for special medical needs by recruiting qualified breast milk donors. Such organizations are also responsible for the disinfection, processing, testing, storage, distribution, and use of breast milk. As DHM is a biological product, it may get contaminated. Microbiological testing is the final step to determine microbial contamination of DHM. However, a universal method for the microbiological analysis of DHM in breast milk banks globally is lacking.DHM without strict screening may become a pote

Clostridium perfringens causes gas gangrene and food poisoning in humans, and monitoring this bacterium is important for public health. Although whole-genome sequencing is useful to comprehensively understand the virulence, resistome, and global genetic relatedness of bacteria, limited genomic data from environmental sources and developing countries hamper our understanding of the richness of the intrinsic genomic diversity of this pathogen. Here, we successfully accumulated the genetic data on C. perfringens strains isolated from hospital effluent and provided the first evidence that predicte

Clostridium perfringens, a Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium, is well-known for its association with gas gangrene, a severe and rapidly progressing infection characterized by tissue gas production and necrosis. In this case report, we present the instance of a 64-year-old male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus who developed a C. perfringens-related infection following a traumatic foot wound. The report emphasizes the critical significance of early diagnosis and aggressive treatment in C. perfringens infections, particularly in patients with underlying risk factors. Detailed accounts of

Early recognition and treatment of surgical site infection (SSI) may prevent devastating consequences of wound infections complicating caesarean delivery (CD). SSI complicates 3-15% of CDs; among the severe forms are necrotising fasciitis (NF) and clostridial gas gangrene, with the latter being the most rapidly spreading and fatal. The aim of this report is to improve early recognition of SSI complicating CD. An obese 32-year-old woman, gravida 2 para 1, with a previous uncomplicated vaginal delivery had a CD for fetal compromise in a district hospital. On day 6 after delivery, she presented t

Emphysematous gastritis (EG) is a rare and life-threatening condition characterized by gas-forming microorganisms causing gas to accumulate within the stomach wall. It has a high mortality rate and is associated with risk factors like gastroenteritis, alcohol use disorder, diabetes mellitus, renal failure, recent abdominal surgery, long-term corticosteroid use, and ingestion of corrosive agents. Diagnosis is challenging due to its rarity and nonspecific symptoms, including severe abdominal pain, coffee-ground emesis, fever, and signs of systemic infection. We present two cases of patients with

INTRODUCTION: Because of its rarity compared to dry and wet gangrene of the lower limb, the gaseous form has often been considered as the most severe form of gangrenous disease. We aimed to report clinical, paraclinical, and therapeutic features, and to identify mortality risk factors of gas gangrene of the lower limb.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a one-center case series retrospective study over a period of 13 years from January 2006 to December 2018.
RESULTS: A total of 19 patients were included: 12 men, 7 women. Mean age was 59.3 ± 11.3 years. There were 17 diabetic patients and o

Bacteraemia brought on by Clostridium perfringens has a very low incidence but is severe and fatal in fifty per cent of cases. C. perfringens is a commensal anaerobic bacterium found in the environment and in the intestinal tracts of animals; it is known to produce six major toxins: α-toxin, β-toxin, ε-toxin, and others. C. perfringens is classified into seven types, A, B, C, D, E, F and G, according to its ability to produce α-toxin, enterotoxin, and necrotising enterotoxin. The bacterial isolates from humans include types A and F, which cause gas gangrene, hepatobiliary infection, and sepsis

The alarming symptoms attributed to several potent clostridial toxins enabled the early identification of the causative agent of tetanus, botulism, and gas gangrene diseases, which belongs to the most famous species of pathogenic clostridia. Although Clostridioides difficile was identified early in the 20th century as producing important toxins, it was identified only 40 years later as the causative agent of important nosocomial diseases upon the advent of antibiotic therapies in hospital settings. Today, C. difficile is a leading public health issue, as it is the major cause of antibiotic-ass

Bacteria of the genus Clostridium are anaerobic Gram-positive spore-forming bacilli that include more than 200 species. Some of them are known to cause invasive infections and diseases caused by the production of toxins. Some of the diseases that are mediated by toxins are colitis in patients with specific risk factors, such as previous administration of antimicrobials or foodborne botulism. Invasive diseases include bacteremia, infective endocarditis (IE), clostridial myonecrosis (gas gangrene), and other diseases that involve the destruction of soft tissue due to the local production of toxi

AIM: Low birth weight may predispose to later insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia, but the pathophysiological mechanisms are unclear. The perinatal endocrine situation may play an important role, but has been little studied. Children of mothers with diabetes during pregnancy are an important risk population for later insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia. We therefore examined relationships between birth weight, insulin and insulin resistance at birth, and insulin secretion and insulin resistance in infancy in these children.
METHODS: We studied 104 infants of mothers with Type 1 diab

Clostridium perfringens is a Gram-positive anaerobe ubiquitously present in different environments, including the gut of humans and animals. C. perfringens have been classified in the seven toxinotypes based on the secreted toxins that cause different diseases in humans and animals. Perfringolysin O (PFO), a cholesterol-dependent pore-forming cytolysin, is one of the potent toxins secreted by almost all C. perfringens isolates. The PFO acts in synergy with α-toxin in the progression of gas gangrene in humans and necrohemorrhagic enteritis in the calves.C. perfringens infections spread very fas

In recent years, hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) has received greater attention. It mainly infects diabetic patients and typically causes a hepatic abscess. Here, we report a case of hvKp that caused forearm muscle and soft tissue infection in addition to bacteremia, hepatic and pulmonary abscess, and hyperglycemia. The patient's condition stabilized after comprehensive treatment. She eventually recovered and was discharged after several debridement and flap operations. At 9 months of follow-up, no signs of infectious recurrence were noted, and the hyperglycemia resolved. Here, we d

Necrotizing fasciitis and gas gangrene represent a rapidly progressive and fatal tissue infection in the absence of early multidisciplinary treatment. There are multiple risk factors, but diabetes remains the main one. The presence of crackles or extensive lesions are an indication for exploration and surgical treatment. Conservative management is associated with zero survival. Iconography, biology or bacteriology can help in the diagnosis, but the latter is only made during surgery. The associated mortality is high, despite appropriate management. We report here the case of a diabetic patient

An 8-y-old, castrated male Siberian Husky dog was admitted to an emergency clinic with acute collapse and severe swelling of both forelimbs, ventral thorax, and axillary region. The clinical assessment, with laboratory tests and radiologic investigation, confirmed severe subcutaneous emphysema and multi-organ failure. The animal died while receiving emergency treatment. On postmortem examination, Clostridium perfringens was isolated from the subcutaneous fluid and the effusion from the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Relevant histopathology findings included subcutaneous emphysema and multi-o

Background: Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are severe, rapidly spreading infections with high morbidity and mortality. Attempts to identify risk factors for mortality and morbidity have produced variable results. We hope to determine which factors across the NSTI population impact mortality, morbidities, and discharge disposition. Patients and Methods: Retrospective data from the National Inpatient Sample from 2012-2018 of patients with primary diagnosis of NSTI (gas gangrene, necrotizing faciitis, cutaneous gangrene, or Fournier gangrene) were identified for analysis.
