Youth Football and the Epidemic of Pediatric Brain Injury: Neurologic and Psychiatric Outcomes in a Cohort of 72,025 Concussions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sports-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most common causes of long-term neurologic and psychiatric morbidity in children and young adults. Football, in particular, has been implicated as a leading source of TBI, yet large-scale comparative studies across sports and developmental stages are limited. The objective of this study was to quantify the burden of football-related TBI in youth compared with other sports and recreational activities, and to evaluate long-term neurologic and psychiatric outcomes across developmental stages. METHODS: This retros

Distinguishing bipolar disorder from unipolar depression in general practice: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder affects approximately 1% of the population, although some studies report prevalence rates of up to 6%. Distinguishing it from unipolar depression remains challenging, with diagnostic delays often exceeding ten years. This systematic review aims to identify clinical and historical features of depressive episodes that support the earlier detection of bipolar disorder in general practice. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The PubMed database was searched using MeSH terms. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ott

Mitigation of mephedrone craving with bupropion in a HIV-positive male who has sex with men - a case report.

Chemsex, defined as the use of psychoactive substances to sustain sexual activity or intensify the experiences associated with it, occurs primarily among men who have sex with men. This article presents the case of a 30-year-old HIV-positive man who engaged in chemsex primarily with mephedrone and, occasionally, GHB, and who subsequently developed mephedrone dependence. He sought psychiatric care because of severe drug craving, recurrent depressive and anxiety symptoms accompanying withdrawal syndromes, and fears of losing control over his addiction. A comprehensive evaluation revealed no co-o

Towards credible digital twins for basic and preclinical research.

Atomoxetine (Strattera(R)) is a selective norepinephrine (noradrenaline) reuptake inhibitor that is not classified as a stimulant, and is indicated for use in patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomoxetine is effective and generally well tolerated. It is significantly more effective than placebo and standard current therapy and does not differ significantly from or is noninferior to immediate-release methylphenidate; however, it is significantly less effective than the extended-release methylphenidate formulation OROS(R) methylphenidate (hereafter referred to as osm

Focused Ultrasound Neuromodulation: Exploring a Novel Treatment for Severe Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder remains a critical health care challenge because current therapeutic strategies have limitations that result in high recurrence and deaths. We evaluated the safety and feasibility of focused ultrasound (FUS) neuromodulation to reduce substance cravings and use in severe opioid and co-occurring substance use disorders. METHODS: This prospective, open-label, single-arm study enrolled 8 participants with severe, primary opioid use disorder with co-occurring substance use. Participants received a 20-minute session of low-intensity FUS (220 kHz) neuromodulation targ

Identifying depression subtypes and investigating their consistency and transitions in a 1-year cohort analysis.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is defined by an array of symptoms that make it challenging to understand the condition at a population level. Subtyping offers a way to unpick this phenotypic diversity for improved disorder characterisation. We aimed to identify depression subtypes longitudinally using the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology: Self-Report (IDS-SR). A secondary analysis of a two-year cohort study called Remote Assessment of Disease and Relapse in Major Depressive Disorder (RADAR-MDD), which collected data every three months from patients with a history of recurrent MDD in the

Biased attention allocation in major depressive disorder: A replication and exploration of the potential effects of depression history.

BACKGROUND: Increased attention allocation to negative-valenced information and decreased attention allocation to positive-valenced information have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of depression. The Matrix task, a free-viewing eye-tracking attention assessment task, has shown corroborating results, coupled with adequate reliability. Yet, replication efforts are still needed. Therefore, we replicated a previously published study in depression, using the same task and attention measures. We also explored the potential added effect of depression history on attention allocation.

Associations between social determinants of health and mental health disorders among U.S. population: a cross-sectional study.

AIMS: The impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on mental health is increasingly realized. A comprehensive study examining the associations of SDOH with mental health disorders has yet to be accomplished. This study evaluated the associations between five domains of SDOH and the SDOH summary score and mental health disorders in the United States. METHODS: We analyzed data from a diverse group of participants enrolled in the All of Us research programme, a research programme to gather data from one million people living in the United States, in a cross-sectional design. Machine learning-based prediction of illness course in major depression: The relevance of risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) comes along with an increased risk of recurrence and poor course of illness. Machine learning has recently shown promise in the prediction of mental illness, yet models aiming to predict MDD course are still rare and do not quantify the predictive value of established MDD recurrence risk factors. METHODS: We analyzed N = 571 MDD patients from the Marburg-Münster Affective Disorder Cohort Study (MACS). Using random forest classifiers, we predicted i) recurrence of depressive episodes and ii) MDD disease trajectories, within a 2-year interval. Traject

Clustering and drivers of symptoms observed at week six after antidepressant treatment in depressed outpatients.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms remaining after antidepressant treatment increase the risk of relapse and recurrence. We aimed to analyze the distribution and main drivers of remaining symptoms in patients with a major depressive episode. METHODS: Two independent samples of 8,229 and 5,926 patients from two large naturalistic studies were retrospectively analyzed. DSM-IV criteria for major depressive episodes were assessed during two face-to-face visits with clinicians: before the prescription of a new antidepressant, and after 6 weeks of treatment. Investigating amygdala nuclei volumes in military personnel with post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, and adjustment disorder: A retrospective cross-sectional study using clinical routine data.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and Adjustment Disorder (AdjD) are highly prevalent among military personnel, often presenting diagnostic challenges due to overlapping symptoms and reliance on self-reporting. The amygdala, particularly the basolateral complex involved in fear-related memory formation and extinction recall, plays a crucial role in emotional processing. Abnormalities in these amygdala nuclei are implicated in PTSD and may distinguish it from other disorders like MDD and AdjD, where these mechanisms are less central. Investigati

Exploring the dynamic relationships between nocturnal heart rate, sleep disruptions, anxiety levels, and depression severity over time in recurrent major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Elevated night resting heart rate (HR) has been associated with increased depression severity, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of sleep disturbance and the influence of anxiety on the relationship between night resting HR and depression severity. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of data collected in the Remote Assessment of Disease and Relapse (RADAR) Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) longitudinal mobile health study, encompassing 461 participants (1774 observations) across three national centers (Netherlands

Psychological interventions for preventing relapse in individuals with partial remission of depression: a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis.

Partial remission after major depressive disorder (MDD) is common and a robust predictor of relapse. However, it remains unclear to which extent preventive psychological interventions reduce depressive symptomatology and relapse risk after partial remission. We aimed to identify variables predicting relapse and to determine whether, and for whom, psychological interventions are effective in preventing relapse, reducing (residual) depressive symptoms, and increasing quality of life among individuals in partial remission. This preregistered (CRD42023463468) systematic review and individual parti

Clinical characteristics, life adversities and personality traits as predictors of onset or recurrence of affective episodes. A seven-year follow-up study in monozygotic twins.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated whether having a familial risk of affective disorders, subclinical psychopathology, functioning, personality traits, stressful life events, and childhood trauma predict the onset or recurrence of affective episodes. METHOD: The present study is a 7-year follow-up study of a baseline sample of 204 monozygotic twins (MZ) with unipolar or bipolar disorder in remission or partial remission (affected), their unaffected co-twins (high-risk), and healthy twins with no personal or familial history of affective disorder (low-risk). RESULTS: During the 7.0-year me

The more, the merrier? Establishing a dose-response relationship for the effects of cognitive control training on depressive symptomatology.

Objective: Cognitive control impairments are frequently observed after remission from depression. There is evidence to show that cognitive control training (CCT) can reduce such impairments and related risk for recurrent episodes. However, it is currently unclear how many CCT sessions are required for short- and long-term effects. Method: This randomized controlled trial investigates the dose-response relationship of CCT in a sample of individuals with remitted depression (n = 216). Participants were randomly assigned to one of six arms, each receiving a different amount of training sessions (

Exercise as a transdiagnostic intervention for improving mental health: An umbrella review.

Exercise is beneficial for mental health in general, but no review has systematically assessed its potential transdiagnostic nature, i.e. whether it is beneficial across specific disorders. We performed a systematic umbrella review of meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of exercise in participants with mental disorders defined according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), assessing exercise's transdiagnostic nature with TRANSD criteria, including eight meta-analyses (six included in the TRANS

CADASIL Syndrome Presenting as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Case Report.

Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a small vessel disease. It is an autosomal dominant inherited disease caused by a mutation in the Notch3 gene. Clinically, it usually presents with recurrent transient ischemic attacks, strokes, vascular dementia, migraine with aura, cognitive impairments and psychiatric symptoms. Cranial MRI is the most useful imaging modality to demonstrate the characteristic radiological findings of CADASIL and gene analysis is the gold standard for diagnosis. Although the clinical manifestations are main

Brain structural correlates of an impending initial major depressive episode.

Neuroimaging research has yet to elucidate whether reported gray matter volume (GMV) alterations in major depressive disorder (MDD) exist already before the onset of the first episode. Recruitment of presently healthy individuals with a subsequent transition to MDD (converters) is extremely challenging but crucial to gain insights into neurobiological vulnerability. Hence, we compared converters to patients with MDD and sustained healthy controls (HC) to distinguish pre-existing neurobiological markers from those emerging later in the course of depression. Combining two clinical cohorts (n = 1
