Association of Diabetes Mellitus in Pregnancy and Perinatal Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes is frequently linked with depression, and both conditions are common complications during pregnancy. However, research findings exploring the relationship between diabetes mellitus in pregnancy (DMP) and perinatal depression (PND) have been inconsistent. Thus, this study seeks to examine the association between DMP and PND in a prospective population-based cohort. METHODS: Women aged 18 to 48 years ( n = 4459) were identified from the Biology, Affect, Stress, Imaging and Cognition study. The diagnosis of DMP was based on International Classification of Diseases code O24 fr

Association Between Diseases and Symptoms Diagnosed in Primary Care and the Subsequent Specific Risk of Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have reported a possible prodrome in multiple sclerosis (MS) defined by nonspecific symptoms including mood disorder or genitourinary symptoms and increased health care use detected several years before diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate agnostically the associations between diseases and symptoms diagnosed in primary care and the risk of MS relative to controls and 2 other autoimmune inflammatory diseases with similar population characteristics, namely lupus and Crohn disease (CD). METHODS: A case-control study was conducted using electronic he

Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitor and tyrosine in parenteral nutrition.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) prevent the breakdown of tyramine in the body, and can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure with significant tyramine build up. This phenomenon, when it occurs, is known as tyramine pressor response. It is unknown if tyrosine administered in parenteral nutrition (PN) leads to tyramine build-up with concomitant use of MAOIs. It is also unknown if PN patients who are taking MAOI are at risk for the tyramine pressor response. This is a theoretical possibility as tyrosine endogenously undergoes decarboxylation to produce tyramine. We describe our experienc

"Knee-Ding" a Diagnosis: A Case of Nail Patella Syndrome.

Nail Patella Syndrome (NPS) is a rare genetic disorder with pathognomonic signs including dystrophic fingernails, iliac horns, and limb abnormalities, which commonly include hypoplastic development of the patellae, causing patients to experience patellar instability. This resulting patellar instability increases susceptibility to recurrent subluxations or dislocations in NPS patients. Since these anatomical abnormalities are present at birth or in childhood, early recognition may prevent the need for surgical intervention if appropriate preventive measures are taken. This case report describes

Towards the First Biomarker Test for Bipolar Spectrum Disorder: An Evaluation of 199 Patients in an Outpatient Setting.

Bipolar spectrum disorder seems to be challenging to diagnose, particularly unspecified or subthreshold types. The delay in diagnosis in the UK for bipolar I and II types is a staggering 10-13 years, with only 15% correctly diagnosed without delay. In the USA, the delay is 6-8 years, and there is a 60% incorrect diagnosis rate. The HCL-32 questionnaire is adequate, but not sufficient by itself, and patients may find it difficult to complete, particularly if they are unwell. We have investigated a biomarker test which can be used in day-to-day clinical practice to assist diagnosis. We evaluated

Subtypes of major depressive disorders and objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behaviors in the community.

BACKGROUND: Lack of physical activity (PA) and high sedentary behavior (SB) may enhance mental health problems, including depression, and are associated with increased mortality. Aside from a large body of research on major depressive disorder (MDD) assessed as an entity and either PA or SB, few studies have examined associations among subtypes of MDD and both PA and SB simultaneously derived from wrist-worn accelerometers. Accordingly, our aim was to explore the associations among MDD subtypes (atypical, melancholic, combined atypical-melancholic and unspecified) and four actigraphy-derived b

Disparities in cardiovascular outcomes among emergency department patients with mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Patients with mental illness have been shown to receive lower quality of care and experience worse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes compared to those without mental illness. This present study examined mental health-related disparities in CV outcomes after an Emergency Department (ED) visit for chest pain. METHODS: This retrospective cohort included adult Medicaid beneficiaries in Washington state discharged from the ED with a primary diagnosis of unspecified chest pain in 2010-2017. Outcomes for patients with any mental illness (any mental health diagnosis or mental-health specific s

Latent class analysis does not support the existence of Rome IV functional bowel disorders as discrete entities.

BACKGROUND: Previously, we used latent class analysis (LCA) to identify novel subgroups in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There are four other functional bowel disorders that, although characterized as discrete disorders, overlap considerably with, and fluctuate to, IBS. These might instead be conceptualized as a milder form of IBS. We explored this hypothesis using LCA in a cohort of people with non-IBS functional bowel disorders. METHODS: We collected demographic, symptom, and psychological health data from 1375 adults in the community who self-identified as having IBS and iden

Impact of parasitic infection on mental health and illness in humans in Africa: a systematic review.

A growing body of research implicates inflammation as a potential pathway in the aetiology and pathophysiology of some mental illnesses. A systematic review was conducted to determine the association between parasitic infection and mental illnesses in humans in Africa and reviewed the state of the evidence available. The search focused on publications from Africa documenting the relationship between parasites from two parasite groups, helminths and protozoans, and four classifications of mental illness: mood affective disorders, neurotic and stress-related disorders, schizotypal disorders and

Progressive Unspecified Motor Speech Disorder: A Longitudinal Single Case Study of an Older Subject.

INTRODUCTION: In a few cases, neurodegenerative diseases debut with a speech disorder whose differential diagnosis can be difficult. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a right-handed woman with a progressive speech impairment, which debuted when she was 80 years old. We report the results of neurological, neuropsychological, and imaging assessments with positron emission tomography (PET) over a period of nine years. Metabolic PET with 18F-FDG was performed at the age of 81 and repeated two years later due to the worsening of symptoms; amyloid PET with 18F-flutemetamol was performed at the a

The Role of Mental Health and Behavioral Disorders in the Development of Temporomandibular Disorder: A SWEREG-TMD Nationwide Case-Control Study.

PURPOSE: There is a well-known association between mental and behavioral disorders (MBD) and temporomandibular disorder (TMD), although the association has not been established in population-based samples. This study aimed to investigate this relationship using national population-based registry data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This case-control study used prospectively collected data from Swedish national registries to investigate exposure to MBD and the probability of developing TMD in all Swedish citizens with hospital-diagnosed or surgically treated TMD between 1998 and 2016. Odds ratios were

Mental health in transgender individuals: a systematic review.

Several lines of evidence indicate the prevalence of mental health disorders in Transgender (TG) individuals is higher than that of cisgender individuals or the general population. In this systematic review, we aim to propose a summary of some of the most significant research investigating mental health disorders' prevalence among this population. We performed a double-blind systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses reporting (PRISMA) on PUBMED/MEDLINE and SCOPUS, specifically using peer-reviewed articles examining the mental health status o

Preliminary studies on apparent mendelian psychotic disorders in consanguineous families.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders are characterized by alteration in emotions, mood and behavior. Genetics is known to play a significant role in the development of psychiatric disorders. Genome-wide association studies have identified several loci associated with psychiatric illnesses. We hypothesize the existence of rare variants following Mendelian recessive mode of inheritance. These variants can be identified in families with multiple affected individuals born to unaffected consanguineous parents. METHODS: We visited psychiatric outpatient departments of multiple hospitals in Lahore, Pak

Therapeutic management of buying/shopping disorder: A systematic literature review and evidence-based recommendations.

The prevalence of buying/shopping disorder (B/SD) has been increasing in the last two decades, and this disorder has a substantial negative impact on general functioning and quality of life. Therefore, a systematic review of the studies dedicated to the efficacy and tolerability of therapeutic interventions, both psychological and pharmacological, might help clinicians to decide on the most evidence-based treatment for these patients. In order to further increase the clinical usefulness of the current review, GRADE-based recommendations were formulated, where enough evidence was found to suppo

DSM-5-TR: Rationale, Process, and Overview of Changes.

The DSM-5 text revision (DSM-5-TR) is the first published revision of the DSM-5 since its publication in 2013. Like the previous text revision (DSM-IV-TR), the main goal of the DSM-5-TR is to comprehensively update the descriptive text accompanying each DSM disorder on the basis of reviews of the literature over the past 10 years. In contrast to the DSM-IV-TR, in which updates were confined almost exclusively to the text, the DSM-5-TR includes many other changes and enhancements of interest to practicing clinicians, such as the addition of diagnostic categories (prolonged grief disorder, stimu

Depressive Disorder Related Hospitalizations in Portugal Between 2008-2015: a Nationwide Observational Study.

Depression is a prevalent disease, being one of the most relevant contributors of disability in the overall global burden of diseases. Hospitalization episodes are important quality indicators in psychiatric care. The primary aim of this study is to analyse depressive disorder related hospitalizations in Portuguese public hospitals and to detail clinical and sociodemographic differences among various subtypes of depression. Admissions with a primary diagnosis of depression in adult patients(> = 18 years) were selected from a national mainland hospitalization database. ICD-9-CM codes were used
