PURPOSE: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) typically onsets in adolescence. Few studies have targeted delivery of evidence-based interventions for SAD in mental health services for adolescents. In specific, no prior studies have examined group cognitive therapy (CT) for SAD in adolescent services delivered by method-trained staff. We implemented group CT in psychiatric outpatient units to assess its feasibility and effectiveness in routine services.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the context of a region-wide implementation program launched by Helsinki University Hospital (HUH), eleven psychiatric nurs

Dysfunctional beliefs are one key factor in the development and maintenance of social phobia. Modifying the appraisal of such beliefs might be achieved with the help of approach-avoidance modification trainings (AAMTs). In these trainings individuals are instructed to push dysfunctional stimuli away and pull functional ones toward themselves via joystick- or swipe-based push/pull-movements. However, the efficacy of the AAMTs could be enhanced by using high-valence words as well as facial expressions of emotions as approach/avoidance responses. The present study aimed to examine the safety and

BACKGROUND: Kinesiophobia is a significant barrier to exercise rehabilitation in patients with angina pectoris (AP). An understanding of the heterogeneity of kinesiophobia and the factors that influence it may help reduce fear of movement, increase rehabilitation adherence, and enhance quality of life of patients with AP.
OBJECTIVE: To explore latent kinesiophobia in patients with AP and analyze any differences.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 210 patients with AP from 4 tertiary hospitals in Zhejiang, China, between February 2023 and August 2023. Kinesiophobia was assesse

BACKGROUND: Although technology is increasingly integrated into clinical practice, a gap remains between available technological tools and their use in occupational therapy education. This gap may lead to technophobia, hesitation in adopting new tools, and limited development of innovative or entrepreneurial thinking among students. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with second-year occupational therapy students enrolled in an assistive technologies course. All participants attended a lecture, followed by practical learning in either a home or laboratory environment. Students w

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a devastating genetic hematologic disorder affecting approximately 80,000 African Americans. Beyond the well-characterized vaso-occlusive pain crises, patients experience significant psychological morbidity, including kinesiophobia (fear of movement) and depression, which profoundly impact quality of life and functional outcomes. This comprehensive review synthesizes current evidence on the relationship between kinesiophobia and depression in SCD patients, with particular attention to gender differences, underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, and clinical implic

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is a common and debilitating psychiatric condition marked by an intense fear of negative evaluation in social situations, leading to significant impairments in occupational, academic, and daily functioning. Among medical students, this fear can significantly impede essential interpersonal interactions and academic performance. Despite its clinical significance, social anxiety remains under-researched in low-resource contexts, including Somalia. This study aims to assess the distribution and severity of social anxiety symptoms and identify its associated factors among

UNLABELLED: Osteoporotic spine fractures deeply affect patients' lives, yet little is known about patients' lived experiences. This qualitative study found that patients face delayed diagnosis, inconsistent care, and emotional distress, while professionals call for clearer communication and coordination. Results highlight the urgent need for more consistent, patient-centered osteoporosis care.
PURPOSE: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) are common and often debilitating, yet patient perspectives remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the lived experiences of p

Respecting patient autonomy can present complex challenges in obstetric anesthesia, particularly when a mother desires safe maternal-fetal care but is unable to cooperate due to psychological barriers. The Ulysses contract is a framework that allows patients to consent to treatment in advance if they are to lack decision making capacity later. This case illustrates a unique implementation of the Ulysses contract in an obstetric patient in which involvement of early multidisciplinary support was paramount to allow safe and timely medical care that aligned with the patient's wishes.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by attentional biases that may contribute to its persistence. While adult models emphasize self-focused and hypervigilant attention, there is limited understanding of how these processes operate in children. This study examined internal and external attentional biases in children with SAD during anticipation of a social stress task-a period when anxiety is typically elevated.
METHODS: Forty-two children with a primary SAD diagnosis and 46 healthy controls (HC), aged 9-14 years, completed a reaction time (RT) task with internal (bodily

BACKGROUND: Ankle musculature serves as active dynamic stabilizers, yet conventional assessment focusing solely on peak torque fails to capture critical aspects of neuromuscular control. The ability to generate accurate, steady forces is paramount for functional joint stability. External supports may modulate sensorimotor function, potentially improving force control.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of bracing and taping on the quantity and quality of evertor muscle force.
METHODS: Sixty participants (18-40 years old) with chronic ankle instability, were randomly allocated to 3 group

CONTEXT: Hip crepitus creates negative emotions and beliefs, leading to adaptations in sports and daily life activities. People with hip/groin pain present psychological responses to pain, and hip crepitus severity may amplify those features. We aimed to explore associations between self-reported hip crepitus severity and pain, quality of life, and psychological features at baseline and 2-year follow-up in football players with hip/groin pain.
DESIGN: Longitudinal.
METHODS: We recruited 184 football players with hip/groin pain (20% females, mean age [SD] = 27.6 [0.4]). Self-reported crepitus
