Neurocognitive mechanisms of mental imagery-based fear conditioning in individuals with social anxiety.

Fear learning serves as a foundational framework for understanding anxiety disorders, with growing interest in the role of mental imagery in fear conditioning. The present study examined whether individuals with social anxiety can acquire fear responses toward neutral conditioned stimuli (CS) via imagined fear-related social scenarios acting as unconditioned stimuli (US). Employing an imagery-based fear conditioning paradigm integrated with event-related potentials (ERPs), we recruited 31 participants with high social anxiety and 30 with low social anxiety. Behaviorally, neutral faces, initial

Self-Evaluation in Childhood Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Repeated Exposure with Support Strategies.

Children with social anxiety disorder (SAD) often perceive their social performance more negatively than external observers, reinforcing negative self-appraisals. Cognitive models suggest a vicious cycle between such distortions and heightened anxiety. This study tested whether repeated exposure to a social-evaluative task, paired with brief, ecologically valid support strategies, improves self-appraisal in children with SAD compared to baseline without support. Participants were 76 children (SAD: n = 33, Mage = 11.73, SD = 1.46, 64% female; healthy controls [HC]: n = 43, Mage = 11.40, SD = 1.

Three-day intensive group cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety in Chinese college students: A randomized controlled trial with an exploratory analysis of underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is highly prevalent among Chinese youth. While traditional group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has demonstrated efficacy, its extended duration and high attrition rates may limit accessibility. In this randomized controlled trial, we developed and evaluated the short- and long-term efficacy of a three-day intensive group CBT protocol and explored a potential serial mediation pathway involving maladaptive social beliefs and fear of negative evaluation. METHODS: Seventy-one participants with elevated social anxiety (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale - Self Report [L

Phone disconnects, anxiety kicks in: A daily diary study of the dynamic reciprocal relationship between nomophobia and fear of missing out among college students.

As smartphones become increasingly integrated into daily life, the growing prevalence of nomophobia and fear of missing out (FoMO) among college students has garnered considerable attention from both researchers and the public. Although previous research has identified FoMO as a key predictor of nomophobia, little is known about the dynamic interplay between these two constructs in everyday contexts. Using a daily diary approach, 200 Chinese college students were intensively tracked over 21 consecutive days. Dynamic structural equation modeling (DSEM) was employed to examine the bidirectional

The role of the dorsal attention network in attention bias modification for social anxiety disorder.

Identifying reliable biomarkers of treatment response is central to advancing personalized psychiatry. While whole-brain functional connectivity models have shown promise in predicting clinical outcomes, especially for broad-spectrum interventions like cognitive-behavioral therapy, targeted treatments may benefit from more specific neuromarkers. In social anxiety disorder (SAD), Gaze-Contingent Music Reward Therapy (GC-MRT) is a novel attention bias modification (ABM) intervention designed to reduce preferential attentional allocation to socially threatening stimuli. Given the dorsal attention

"The fear is real": Exploring radiophobia experiences among Ghanaian diagnostic radiography students and strategies for mitigating potential consequences.

INTRODUCTION: Professional capability development in diagnostic radiography education relies heavily on clinical placement. However, these periods expose students to ionising radiation, resulting in radiophobia - an exaggerated fear characterised by actual and perceived radiation risks. This study investigates the frequency, sources, and management strategies of radiophobia among Ghanaian diagnostic radiography students. METHODS: This was a mixed-methods exploratory sequential study conducted among second-, third-, and fourth-year diagnostic radiography students from seven undergraduate progr

Prefrontal-limbic dysconnectivity tracks emotion regulation deficits in depressed adolescents with social anxiety symptom severity.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescence is frequently accompanied by emotion regulation (ER) deficits, particularly in socially stressful contexts. Social anxiety symptoms frequently co-occur with adolescent depression and are associated with individual differences in emotional and neural responses to social threat. However, how individual differences in social anxiety symptom severity relate to ER processes during social exclusion in depressed adolescents remains insufficiently understood. METHODS: Sixty-two adolescents (30 MDD, 32 healthy controls; aged 12-18) completed a

Differentiated impact of social and non-social content in Alexithymia: A facial thermal infrared imaging study.

Alexithymia, a difficulty in processing and expressing emotions, is associated with socio-emotional challenges and altered autonomic responses. This raises the question of whether cognitive (CA) and affective (AA) alexithymia can be differentiated based on parasympathetic and sympathetic indices. This study explores the reactivity of CA and AA individuals to social and non-social emotional stimuli. Participants, categorized as non-alexithymic (NA), CA, or AA based on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire, completed assessments on empathy, social phobia, depr

Interpersonal Profiles in Social Anxiety Disorder: Different Settings, Different Outcomes?

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most common mental disorders, with the majority of those affected not receiving primary care or psychotherapy. Internet-based treatments may be an alternative for individuals with SAD. We hypothesize that interpersonal characteristics differ between SAD patients in face-to-face (ftf) and online treatments, and that these factors predict treatment outcomes. METHODS: The sample consisted of 539 patients with SAD from four different online treatment studies (N = 376) and one university outpatient clinic in Europe (N = 163) who received integ

How does social support influence Kinesiophobia after AMI? A mechanism-based analysis of rehabilitation resource utilization and exercise self-efficacy (a cross-sectional study).

BACKGROUND: Kinesiophobia, defined as fear of movement, has emerged as a critical psychological barrier affecting health behaviors in patients undergoing rehabilitation following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Existing research on kinesiophobia has largely focused on non-cardiac chronic conditions, with social support's mechanism in alleviating cardiac-specific kinesiophobia underexplored. OBJECTIVE: Drawing upon Social Cognitive Theory and the Health Belief Model, the present study proposes and tests a chain-mediated model linking social suppo

Modelling social fear in mice: advancements in social fear conditioning and social defeat paradigms.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and chronic mental illness whose pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, and treatment responses are often suboptimal. Animal models play a crucial role in elucidating its neurobiological mechanisms and developing novel therapeutic approaches. This article systematically reviews two primary mouse modelling paradigms: social fear conditioning (SFC) and social defeat. The SFC model induces specific social fear behaviors by pairing a social stimulus with an aversive event, whereas the social defeat model, by simulating social conflict and psychological

Network analysis of problematic internet use and psychopathology: anxiety as a central symptom and sleep reduction as a bridge symptom.

BACKGROUND: In adolescent populations, depressive disorders exhibit bidirectional associations with problematic internet use (PIU), a comorbidity presenting heightened complexity among clinically diagnosed individuals. Previous research has been limited in its ability to resolve multidimensional interactions among psychopathological symptoms or capture how self-reinforcing symptom networks perpetuate comorbid persistence and PIU. This study aimed to establish examine the network structure of psychopathological symptoms and PIU among clinically depressed adolescents in China, identifying core a

A qualitative evaluation of cognitive-behavioural therapy components for social anxiety in autistic adults: Lived experiences from a modified group program.

Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for social anxiety. However, despite the high prevalence of social anxiety among autistic adults, much less is known about how autistic people experience each CBT component used in treatment. This qualitative study explores autistic adults' perspectives on a modified cognitive-behaviour therapy group programme for social anxiety, focusing on the perceived effectiveness of CBT components and the identification of needed modifications. Twenty-seven participants who completed the intervention took part in semi-structured interviews.
