Improving Emotion Control in Social Anxiety by Targeting Rhythmic Brain Circuits.

Social avoidance is a hallmark of social anxiety disorder. Difficulties in controlling avoidance behavior are the core maintaining factor of this impairing condition, hampering the efficacy of existing therapies. This preregistered study tested a physiologically grounded noninvasive enhancement of control over social approach and avoidance behavior in socially anxious individuals. Participants received dual-site phase-coupled electrical stimulation aimed at enhancing endogenous interregional theta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling between prefrontal and sensorimotor cortex, a mechanism known to s

Systemic steroidophobia scale for pediatric rheumatology (SSS-PR): development and validation of a novel psychometric tool measuring clinician steroidophobia.

BACKGROUND: Systemic corticosteroids are cornerstone therapies in pediatric inflammatory diseases. Despite their clinical importance, both parents and clinicians may harbor substantial concerns regarding steroid-related adverse effects. While “steroidophobia” has been extensively studied in the context of topical corticosteroids, no validated instrument exists to assess clinician-based attitudes toward systemic corticosteroid use. This study aimed to develop and validate novel psychometric tools to measure systemic steroidophobia among clinicians. METHODS: A methodological, multicenter study w

Kinesiophobia and Psychological Readiness of Return to Sport in High-Performance Judokas After an Injury: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Judo is an Olympic contact sport with a high risk of injury owing to its physical, technical, and competitive demands. The role of psychological factors in recovery and Return to Sport (RTS), such as kinesiophobia and self-perception, is key in the injury process. These factors influence both the success and timing of return and are affected by variables such as locus of control, previous experience, and contextual factors. This study sought to analyse the relationship between sociodemographic, clinical, sports, and psychological variables with kinesiophobia and self

Anxiety Disorder Types From a Metabolomics Perspective: A Mendelian Randomization Analysis Based on 1400 Plasma Metabolites.

BACKGROUND: Different anxiety types demonstrate overlapping clinical features while retaining distinct characteristics, often leading to diagnostic challenges. Existing diagnostic approaches predominantly rely on symptom-based criteria, which may result in ambiguity. The identification of biomarkers is essential for elucidating the metabolomic mechanisms underlying anxiety, thereby informing improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. METHODS: We conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study, utilizing data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on plasma metabolites and three anxie

Fear learning in unmedicated patients with anxiety disorders: a comparison of delay conditioning, fear reversal, and trace conditioning.

Anxiety disorders are common and impairing, yet their underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Fear learning provides a critical translational framework for investigating pathological anxiety, bridging laboratory models and clinical phenomena. Prior studies have been limited by important methodological issues, including the inclusion of non-anxiety diagnoses, high comorbidity, and medication use. Here we examined three forms of fear learning- delay conditioning, fear reversal, and trace conditioning-in unmedicated adults with minimally comorbid primary anxiety disorders (Generaliz

Long term biopsychosocial outcomes and their associations after total knee arthroplasty in individuals with knee osteoarthritis.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common intervention for individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA) aimed at reducing pain and improving function. However, recovery extends beyond surgical outcomes, involving complex interactions among physical, psychological, and social factors. This study evaluated long-term postoperative outcomes including pain, function, quality of life (QoL), and psychological status in individuals with knee OA from a biopsychosocial perspective. A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients aged 50–80 years who underwent TKA between January 2017 and December 2022

A Neurodevelopmental Model of Social Threat Sensitivity as a Mechanism Linking Fearful Temperament, Social Anxiety, and Depression in Youth.

Sensitivity to social threat is one form of emotion dysregulation implicated in internalizing psychopathologies, yet its developmental origins and mechanistic role remain insufficiently specified. One of the most reliable, early-emerging predictors of internalizing disorders is extreme fearful temperament, which is characterized by heightened sensitivity to novelty and threat, especially if social in nature. Links between early fearful temperament, social reticence with unfamiliar peers in childhood, and the later emergence of social anxiety disorder are well-established, as is the link betwee

Social anxiety is associated with greater autonomic and visuocortical generalization of conditioned aversive responses to faces.

Aversive generalization learning is an adaptive trait that is necessary for survival in a dynamic environment. However, this process is exaggerated in persons with anxiety disorders, leading to overgeneralization of learned threat associations, hyperreactive fight-or-flight responses, and persistent avoidance. Patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibit impaired conditioned threat discrimination particularly with respect to social stimuli, such as faces. The present study examined the relationship between social anxiety and generalization of visuocortical and pupil dilation responses t
