BACKGROUND: Agoraphobia is "the worry of finding oneself in circumstances where leaving might be awkward or difficult, or where assistance might not be available in the event of panic symptoms." The worry is excessive compared to the situation, lasts for at least six months, and interferes with daily functioning.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to ascertain the prevalence of a positive screen for agoraphobic symptoms among senior citizens and the correlates that contribute to it.
METHODS: Seven hundred eighty senior citizens aged 60 years or over who lived in a rural health tra

Cancer cells expressing constitutively active phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) are proliferative regardless of the absence of insulin, and they form dietary restriction (DR)-resistant tumors in vivo. Because the binding of insulin to its receptors activates the PI3K/AKT/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling cascade, activating mutations in the PIK3CA oncogene may determine tumor response to DR-like pharmacological strategies targeting the insulin and mTOR pathways. The anti-diabetic drug metformin is a stereotypical DR mimetic that exerts its anti-cancer activity through a dual me

BACKGROUND: Exercise improves stress perception and sleep quality and reduces repetitive negative thinking in patients with various mental disorders. However, it is unclear whether changes in these processes mediate treatment effects on psychopathology in a transdiagnostic sample.
METHODS: Physically inactive adult outpatients with depressive disorders, agoraphobia, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and/or nonorganic primary insomnia were randomly allocated to ImPuls - a 6-month transdiagnostic group exercise intervention - plus treatment-as-usual (n = 198), or to a treatment-as

The efficacy of exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (eCBT) for panic disorder and agoraphobia (PD/AG) is well established, but the mechanisms of action are still under debate. Here we investigated whether increased fear activation (by provoking additional bodily symptoms using interoceptive challenges) during exposure to agoraphobic situations would improve therapy outcome. Individuals diagnosed with PD/AG (N = 124) were randomized to one of the two variants of eCBT, with (exposure plus fear activation; E + FA) and without (exposure alone; E) guided evocation of unpleasant body symptom

Chronic tinnitus is frequently described as occurring with psychiatric comorbidities. However, this diagnosis-based framing may obscure underlying dimensions of psychological vulnerability in individuals both with and without measurable hearing loss (HL). This study thus aimed to identify transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology in patients with chronic tinnitus and examine their relevance for tinnitus-related distress (TRD) in patients with or without HL. In a clinical sample of N = 678 chronic tinnitus patients, pure-tone audiometry determined HL status and self-report screeners assesse

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to develop a valid and reliable instrument, the Sportive Agoraphobia Scale (SAS) to measure individuals' anxiety and avoidance behaviors related to social visibility, body image, and evaluative concerns in physical activity settings.
METHODS: Conducted within the general survey model, data were collected from 352 participants in four provinces of Türkiye. The scale development followed an established eight-step framework. An initial pool of 30 items was reduced to 24 based on expert feedback, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) identified a three-factor

INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy (tCBT) for anxiety disorders (AD) is well established. Few studies have investigated the role of insomnia in the context of tCBT for AD. Considering the high prevalence of insomnia symptoms in individuals with AD, this study aims to explore the effects of tCBT on insomnia, as well as to examine the predictive or moderating role of insomnia on the efficacy of tCBT for AD.
METHOD: The present study consists of a secondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial of tCBT for AD (Roberge et al., 2022). The 231 par

OBJECTIVE: Relatively little research has examined the correlates of suicidal ideation (SI) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in children. To address this gap, we sought to identify demographic, psychological and parent-related factors associated with increased SI and NSSI in this population.
METHOD: Participants were 697 children (ages 7-11; 62.6% Non-Hispanic White; 51.9% boys) and their mothers recruited from the community. Information was collected regarding children's histories of SI and NSSI, demographics, children's and mothers' psychopathology, mothers' prior suicide attempt and par

BACKGROUND: Standard treatments for mental health outpatients have high non-response rates and are often difficult to access. Exercise therapy has shown effectiveness in this population, but evidence on its cost-effectiveness is scarce and mixed across studies. This study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of ImPuls, a transdiagnostic group exercise intervention for outpatients with common mental disorders.
METHODS: This study was part of the multicentre, randomised controlled trial (n=400) comparing ImPuls plus treatment as usual (TAU) with TAU alone in German outpatient care. Participan

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) frequently co-occurs with major depressive disorder (MDD). We examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of SAD across three heterogeneous MDD cohorts.
METHODS: Secondary analyses were conducted in adult (CO-MED: n = 482; GSRD: n = 1398) and late-life (IRL-GREY: n = 438) patients. SAD was assessed dimensionally (PDSQ) and categorically (MINI; SCID-1). Cohort-specific instruments were used to assess depressive severity (QIDS; MADRS), suicidality (CHRT; MADRS; SIS) and hypomanic symptoms (ASRM; YMRS). In late-life depression, neurocognit

INTRODUCTION: Planning and problem solving, subdomains of executive functioning, are important for daily functioning and clinical outcomes. Although executive functioning encompasses several domains, whether planning-specific deficits are a transdiagnostic feature across psychiatric disorders remains unclear.
METHODS: Planning and problem solving in 658 young adults aged 18-29 was assessed in a cross-sectional study using the One Touch Stocking of Cambridge (OTS) task, with the number of problems solved correctly on first choice and mean latency to correct response as outcomes. Participants h

BACKGROUND: Conflicting results on the association of the Val66Met polymorphism in the BDNF gene with anxiety-related disorders are observed from previous studies and meta-analyses. We performed an updated meta-analysis to obtain more precise estimates and add additional analyses not performed by previous reviews.
METHODS: Using combinations of various key terms, articles in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, written in English were collected until October 31, 2024. Data were extracted independently by two authors and analyzed using Review Manager 5.4.

INTRODUCTION: Panic disorder, agoraphobia, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) frequently co-occur and share overlapping symptoms, yet it remains unclear whether they reflect distinct or interconnected symptom systems. This study examined the network structure of these disorders using clinician-administered diagnostic data.
METHODS: A total of 463 adults completed the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) conducted by trained clinicians. Eighteen items from the panic disorder, agoraphobia, and GAD modules were retained after a multistep selection procedure ensuring clini

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief cognitive behavioral therapy intervention conducted via videoconference for adults with panic disorder and agoraphobia in the emergency room (ER) of a Mexican hospital. We examined the impact of the intervention on quality of life, emergency room utilization, and participants' satisfaction with the intervention and the use of telepsychology. A multiple-baseline single-case experimental design was employed. Sixteen adults diagnosed with panic disorder were assigned to one of four cohorts and received seven individual therapy ses

This study estimated the prevalence of anxiety disorders and analyzed the distribution and predictors of anxiety symptoms in Sergipe, Brazil, using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Anxiety Scale (CESA). A cross-sectional household survey was conducted with 1143 adults between the ages of 18-80. The CESA and sociodemographic and health questionnaires were administered. The CESA demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.90). Overall, the prevalence of anxiety disorders was 13.8% (95% CI = 11.8-15.8), with agoraphobia (10.9%; 95% CI = 9.1-12.7) and social phobia (10.6%; 9

BACKGROUND: Interoceptive exposure (IE) to feared bodily sensations is a core component of cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder (PD), but standard office-based IE can be perceived as aversive and tedious, potentially limiting engagement. Vigorous physical exercise may provide a more acceptable and health-promoting way to elicit interoceptive cues. Objective: To examine the feasibility and efficacy of a brief intermittent intense exercise (BIE) program, used as an IE strategy, compared with Jacobson's relaxation training (RT) in treatment-free patients with PD.
METHODS: In this pros

Hikikomori, described as "prolonged social withdrawal," is a condition characterized by an individual's severe social isolation in their home for at least 6 months with consequent functional impairment or distress. It is mainly observed in adolescents and young adults. It was initially described in Japanese cultures, but has since been reported in other countries. This report is the first to describe a case of hikikomori in a male patient in Malta, an island nation in the central Mediterranean and one of Europe's smallest countries. He presented to psychiatric services incidentally after over

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are prevalent and associated with substantial distress and impairment. Within the metacognitive model of emotional disorders, the cognitive attentional syndrome (CAS) and associated metacognitions maintain anxiety. The Attention Training Technique (ATT) targets the CAS and related metacognitions. However, less is known about how symptoms and metacognitive mechanisms evolve across treatment phases.
OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore temporal dynamics in emotional symptoms and metacognitive mechanisms during group ATT by estimating mean levels, variability, and

INTRODUCTION: Suicide risk in patients with depressive disorder (DD) and panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PD/A) is often associated with depression, hopelessness, and anxiety-related factors, but their predictive roles remain unclear.
AIM: To identify the strongest clinical predictors of suicide attempts in patients with DD and PD/A, and to assess the applicability of a predictive model within and across diagnostic groups.
METHODS: A total of 94 patients (48 with DD- acute or recurrent, 46 with PD/A) were assessed using the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI), Beck Depression I
