INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) works-but not equally well for all patients. Less than 50% of patients with internalising disorders achieve clinically meaningful improvement, with negative consequences for patients and healthcare systems. The research unit (RU) 5187 seeks to improve this situation by an in-depth investigation of the phenomenon of treatment non-response (TNR) to CBT. We aim to identify bio-behavioural signatures associated with TNR, develop predictive models applicable to individual patients and enhance the utility of predictive analytics by collecting a natur

Little is known about the prevalence of anxiety disorders in Han Chinese children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This is an important topic for research as symptoms may be written off as being due to ASD alone.ObjectiveTo provide prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in a clinical sample of Han Chinese children with ASD and identify correlates which may be amenable to intervention.MethodThe pre-existing ASD diagnosis of 165 Hong Kong Han Chinese was confirmed with the Chinese version of the Developmental, Dimensional and Diagnostic Interview (3Di). Anxiety comorbidities were confirmed wi

BACKGROUND: Data from the World Mental Health (WMH) surveys on the coverage cascade has underscored the importance of perceived need for seeking treatment of mental disorders. However, little research has focused on treatment contact after adjusting for perceived need. We do so here in analysis of WMH data.
METHODS: The WMH data considered here come from 25 community surveys implemented between 2001 and 2019 across 21 countries. n = 12,508 of the n = 117,739 respondents in these surveys aged 18 and older met criteria for one or more 12-month DSM-IV anxiety, mood, or substance use disorders as

BACKGROUND: Separation anxiety disorder (SEPAD) is characterized by pronounced fear or anxiety concerning separation from attachment figures. Despite its high lifetime prevalence, adult SEPAD often remains undetected due to a lack of diagnostic tools in multiple languages. The Adult Separation Anxiety Questionnaire (ASA-27) is a key instrument for assessing symptoms of SEPAD in adults. However, no validated German version is available.
OBJECTIVES: This study addressed the translation and validation of the ASA-27 in a German-speaking population to introduce the first German questionnaire asses

Background: Although digital cognitive behavioral therapy (dCBT) is considered effective for anxiety disorders, there is considerable heterogeneity in its efficacy across studies, and its varied treatment content and clinical components may explain such heterogeneity. Objective: This review aimed to identify the efficacy of digital cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder and agoraphobia, and examine whether applying relevant clinical components of interoceptive exposure, inhibitory-learning-based exposure, and personalization of treatment enhances its efficacy. Methods: Randomized cont

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder marked by severe fear of panic attacks in the absence of causes. Agoraphobia is a related anxiety disorder, which involves fear and avoidance of specific situations in which escape or help may be difficult. Both can be debilitating and impair well-being. One treatment option may be internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT), which allows large-scale application and may overcome treatment barriers for some individuals.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluated the effectiveness of a novel online self-help intervention for panic disorder

OBJECTIVE: Panic disorder (PD) is a psychopathological condition characterized by short-lived anxiety attacks in association with several physical symptoms, followed by the fear of other attacks' possible occurrence or their consequences and avoidance behaviors. Recent literature highlighted a significant correlation between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and anxiety disorder. To date, the specific association between PD and autistic traits (ATs) remains to be clarified. This study aimed to investigate the presence of an autism spectrum in patients with PD, specifically focusing on the presenc

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We aim to update readers on the latest evidence regarding the role of the gut microbiome in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), agoraphobia, and social anxiety disorder (SAD). This review summarises the literature on microbiome composition and function in these conditions, provides insights about causality and mechanisms and evaluates current evidence for microbiome-based interventions in anxiety disorders.
RECENT FINDINGS: Most studies exploring the microbiome in anxiety disorders are small, cross-sectional studies. Nevertheless, some consistent findin

BACKGROUND: Guided mobile-based interventions may mitigate symptoms of anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, agoraphobia, or social anxiety disorder. With exposure therapy being efficacious in traditional treatments for these disorders, recent advancements have introduced 360° videos to deliver virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) within mobile-based interventions.
OBJECTIVE: Despite ongoing trials evaluating the treatment's efficacy, research examining patient perceptions of this innovative approach is still scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to explore patient opinions on specific t

Among youth in residential youth care (RYC) there is a high load of experienced adversities and a high prevalence of mental disorders. Less is known about the stability and change of mental disorders and whether individual or contextual factors that are protective of adult mental disorders could be identified. The current study is a 10-year follow-up of young adults with a history of RYC in Norway. At baseline (T1), 76% met criteria of a mental disorder. At follow-up (T2), diagnostic psychiatric interviews were conducted by phone by experienced doctors and psychologists. A response rate of 52%

PURPOSE: Panic disorder (PD) and PD with comorbid agoraphobia (PDA) share similar clinical characteristics but possess distinct symptom structures. However, studies specifically investigating the differences between PD and PDA are rare. Thus, the present study conducted a network analysis to examine the clinical networks of PD and PDA, focusing on panic symptom severity, anxiety sensitivity, anticipatory fear, and avoidance responses. By comparing the differences in network structures between PD and PDA, with the goal of identifying the central and bridge, we suggest clinical implications for

Henri Rey's theory of claustro-agoraphobia is helpful for the understanding of the difficulties that can arise when the frame of treatment is modified in remote analysis or psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The felt intense closeness and the actual distance of remote analysis lend themselves to a defensive position in remote analysis when the patient feels at once trapped in the analysis and yet unable to be without the analysis. I suggest here that such claustro-agoraphobic fears arise particularly at times in the analytic process in which change is imminent. The patient is then confronted with g

AIMS: The literature on persistent antidepressant withdrawal symptoms is sparse. This systematic review is the first to examine the prevalence, duration, severity, risk/protective factors and treatment strategies for post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) following the discontinuation of antidepressant medications.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science and PsycInfo, focusing on newer-generation antidepressants. The electronic database search was complemented with handsearching reference lists of pivotal studies. We included original studies in adults reporting on PAWS and providing data

BACKGROUND: Although agoraphobia is considered an independent diagnosis, the literature is limited in studies examining it alone. This study aims to investigate the relationship between agoraphobia, metacognitive beliefs, and functionality and to increase interest in studies on agoraphobia by contributing to areas that are missing in the literature.
METHODS: Seventy healthy controls without any psychiatric disorder and seventy individuals with agoraphobia without comorbidities were included in the study. Data regarding sociodemographic characteristics, agoraphobic symptoms, metacognitive beli

The study investigated the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of a two-week group Attention Training Technique (ATT; Wells, 1990, 2007) intervention for patients with mixed anxiety disorders in a residential setting, compared to a waitlist control. Twenty patients diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, panic disorder with agoraphobia, or generalized anxiety disorder were randomly assigned either to receive the ATT intervention first or wait three weeks before treatment. Patients were assessed at baseline, pre-treatment, post-treatment, 3-month follow-up, and 6-month follow-up. Results suppo
