BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated an association between neuroticism and alterations in cortical folding. However, few studies have investigated the relation between neuroticism and gyrification in panic disorder (PD) patients and healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: This study included 102 PD patients and 128 HC. Neuroticism, anxiety symptomatology, ways of coping strategies, and health-related quality of life was evaluated. Voxel-wise correlation analyses using FreeSurfer were conducted to determine the neural correlates of neuroticism related to cortical gyrification.
RESULTS: As n

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly heterogenous disorders with approximately 636,120 different symptom combinations. The goal of the present study was to examine the association of worst-event trauma with demographic characteristics, psychiatric comorbidities, and PTSD symptoms among a large nationally representative sample of US adults with lifetime PTSD (N = 2339). The study used data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III to examine correlates of worst-event trauma using survey-weighted logistic and linear regression analyses. Exposure to war and terrorism is linked to psychological distress, impacting both those directly involved and their relatives. Children, who are especially vulnerable due to their developing cognitive and emotional capacities, are significantly affected. However, there is a lack of research on the psychological effects of war and terrorism on autistic children. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the psychological distress experienced by Israeli autistic children compared to non-autistic children following the October 7th, 2023, terrorism attack and subsequent war. The study involved

Kinesiophobia is particularly common in postoperative lung cancer patients, which causes patients may be reluctant to cough and move due to misperception, internal fear or fear of pain, and avoid rehabilitation training affecting postoperative recovery. Therefore, it is clinically important to discover the factors associated with the occurrence of kinesiophobia and to develop a prediction model. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of kinesiophobia in postoperative lung cancer patients and to develop a prediction model to assess its performance, thereby providing a reference for clini

INTRODUCTION: Persecutory delusions are very common in severe mental health disorders such as schizophrenia. Existing treatments often do not work well enough. We developed a face-to-face theory-driven psychological intervention, called Feeling Safe, that produces very large reductions in persistent persecutory delusions. The challenge now is to make Feeling Safe widely available. So, we developed a 6-month supported online version, called Feeling Safer. The aim is an intervention that patients can easily access and use, reduces persecutory delusions and can be supported by a range of mental h

INTRODUCTION: Virtual Reality (VR) is an interactive, three-dimensional computing environment that enables individuals to experience a sense of presence as if they are immersed in a real-world setting. VR is currently being implemented in therapeutic interventions for individuals with certain mental disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the implementation and evolution of VR in the treatment of panic disorder, agoraphobia, and panic disorder with or without agoraphobia over the past decade.
METHOD: A systematic literature review was conducted based on articles retrieved from PubMed, Cochrane,

Expectancy violation has been proposed as a potential core mechanism of action in psychotherapy, particularly in exposure therapy for anxiety disorders. However, various relevant expectations have been discussed, and empirical studies examining their significance are still scarce. This study aimed to investigate one specific form of expectancy violation, based on Rachman's (1994) match-mismatch model, specifically by comparing expected and experienced fear and examining their relationship to safety behaviour during exposure in vivo in 268 patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for panic disorder wit

This contribution addresses the agoraphobic syndrome in several important ways. Tracing the different formulations of agoraphobia reveals shifts in psychoanalytic theorizing. The etiology and maintenance of agoraphobia includes the role of genetic factors, intra- and interpersonal dynamics, and the influence of social conditions. As such, an understanding and treatment of agoraphobia requires a multimodal and interdisciplinary approach.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the first-line treatment for panic disorder and agoraphobia. Supportive digital technologies can enhance the effectiveness of CBT. This pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigates if patients with panic disorder and/or agoraphobia benefit from blended cognitive behavioral therapy (bCBT), combining standard CBT with an integrated digital application. Patients were randomized into two study groups: The bCBT group, receiving standard CBT plus a digital application (elona therapy) used between sessions (n = 34), and the control group, receiving standa

Recurrent and unexpected panic attacks, persistent concerns about their implications, and the avoidance of numerous situations in which panic attacks are particularly feared significantly impact the lives of affected individuals. These symptoms are key characteristics of the co-occurrence of panic disorder and agoraphobia. This article provides an overview of these disorders and discusses effective therapeutic approaches.

Cognitive distortions are thought to play a significant role in the etiology and maintenance of psychopathology. The belief in a dangerous world (BDW) is an important cognitive distortion that, along with other distortions, was recently included in formal diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Due to its grouping with other distortions, posttraumatic BDW has not been examined in large-scale epidemiological studies, though one recent survey assessed it in isolation. This methodological change provided a novel opportunity to empirically evaluate this cognitive distortion i

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health disorders, affecting a significant portion of the population. However, conventional treatments, such as pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, often have limited effectiveness and may lead to undesirable side effects. Consequently, there is a growing demand for new alternative treatments for anxiety disorders. Recent studies suggest that electroacupuncture may demonstrate therapeutic effects in managing anxiety by mediating nerve stimulation.
OBJECTIVE: This study is designed to assess the efficacy and safety of electroacupunct

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common and have a substantial impact on people with epilepsy (PWE). However, they often go under-recognized. In recent years, epilepsy-specific anxiety has gained increasing attention in the literature. To improve mental health care for people with epilepsy (PWE), we developed and validated the traditional Chinese versions of the Epilepsy Anxiety Survey Instrument (EASI) and its brief screener (brEASI) among PWE in Hong Kong.
METHOD: We developed the TC-EASI through forward and backward translation, followed by a review by an expert panel and a focus group. W

Background: Food addiction (FA) is an emerging construct that mirrors the behavioral and neurobiological characteristics of substance use disorders. Despite growing interest, its association with specific psychiatric disorders among bariatric patients remains understudied. Objective: Our aim was to examine the prevalence and strength of associations between FA and seven major psychiatric disorders in individuals who underwent bariatric surgery. Methods: In a sample of 100 post-bariatric patients referred for psychiatric evaluation, FA was assessed using the modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD) is sexually dimorphic in its clinical manifestation, possibly due to differences in brain processing of fear and anxiety. Given oxytocin's role in socio-emotional regulation, epigenetic alterations in the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) constitute one possible mechanism underlying sexual dimorphism in PD. We investigated the sex difference in cerebral gray matter volume (GMV) and its association with OXTR methylation in PD patients.
METHODS: Forty-six PD patients (24 women) and 55 healthy controls (HCs; 31 women) underwent a high-resolution T1-weighted magnetic r

INTRODUCTION: Many people with psychosis find the world very frightening. It can be difficult for them to do everyday things-for example, walking down a busy street, travelling on a bus or going to the shops. Sometimes, the fears are so great that individuals rarely leave their homes. gameChange virtual reality therapy is designed to reduce this agoraphobic avoidance. In gameChange, users practise going into computerised immersive versions of ordinary situations. A virtual therapist guides users through the programme. A mental health worker also supports people. People normally do six sessions

Anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder (SAD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), agoraphobia (AG), and specific phobia (SP), are characterized by core features of excessive anxiety and fear. Furthermore, these disorders are often accompanied by avoidance behaviors. While avoidance is a common behavioral response, it may be a consequence of or a cocontributor to the anxiety and fear driving these disorders. This narrative review integrates the interactions among anxiety, fear, and avoidance behaviors across these five disorders and synthesizes findings from c

Panic disorder (PD) and agoraphobia (AG) are prevalent mental health issues. Recent approaches have integrated mobile virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) into internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) to facilitate exposure therapy, providing a promising supplement to traditional psychotherapy. This preregistered, randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of a guided IMI with integrated VRET for treating PD and AG. Patients (N = 32) were either assigned to the experimental group receiving the IMI with VRET, or the active control group receiving sessions covering stress educa

BACKGROUND: Exposure-based CBT is highly effective in treating patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia; however, access to such treatments is often limited. Smartphone-based self-management apps offer a promising low-threshold treatment alternative to face-to-face therapy. Although such health apps have shown to be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms, comparisons to active treatments are still scarce. Therefore, this study compared the effectiveness of a self-help app to an established face-to-face CBT intervention for panic and agoraphobia.

BACKGROUND: Autistic children experience significantly higher rates of anxiety compared to nonautistic children. The precise relations between autism characteristics and anxiety symptoms remain unclear in this population. Previous work has explored associations at the domain level, which involve examining broad categories or clusters of symptoms, rather than the relationships between specific symptoms and/or individual characteristics. We addressed this gap by taking a network approach to understand the shared structure of autism characteristics and anxiety symptoms.
METHOD: Data were pooled
