Emetophobia (fear of vomiting): A meta-analysis.

Emetophobia refers to a specific fear of vomiting. There are only few original research studies on this condition and no study that has meta-analytically synthesized findings to describe the characteristics of persons with emetophobia. To this end, we extracted data from 31 reports and-as we examined different dependent variables-each meta-analysis was based on five to 21 samples. The pooled mean age of persons with emetophobia was 29 years but was reduced to 21-27 years when adjusting for publication bias. The pooled mean age of disorder onset was 10 years. The pooled proportion of females wa

A Novel Hypnotic Intervention for the Treatment of Ornithophobia. A Case Study.

This case study explores the successful treatment of severe ornithophobia in a 25-year-old woman, referred to as Emma, through a novel hypnotic intervention that integrates mindfulness and autogenic training. Emma's chronic fear of pigeons had significantly impacted her professional life. The Severity Measure for Specific Phobia-Adult (SMSP-A) was used to assess her level of phobia pre- and post-intervention, as well as at a 6-month follow-up. Emma's hypnotizability was measured using the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale - Form C (SHSS:C). Following a single hypnotic session, Emma experi

Diagnostic classification of fear of childbirth: why specific phobia may not be enough.

BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth (FoB) is a common experience during pregnancy which can cause clinically significant distress and impairment. To date, a number of investigations of FoB have assumed that clinically significant FoB is best understood as a type of specific phobia. However, preliminary evidence suggests that specific phobia may not be the only diagnostic category under which clinically significant symptoms of FoB are best described. AIM: The current study is the first to investigate which DSM-5 diagnostic categories best describe clinically significant symptoms of FoB. METHOD: Pr

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for a Patient Diagnosed with Emetophobia - case study.

The aim of this paper is to present the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of emetophobia. The fear of vomiting (emetophobia) is a specific phobia, the mild form affects over 3% of the population, predominantly women. The main symptoms are associ- ated with the fear of experiencing nausea and other gastrointestinal sensations. These sensations are interpreted as a signal of impending vomiting, leading to discomfort and avoidance of eating and social situations. The symptoms may resemble other somatic and psychological disorders and can co-occur with various mental hea

Can a virtual reality exposure therapy app improve symptoms of Emetophobia? A single-subject Experimental design study.

Emetophobia (fear of vomiting) is an understudied disorder that affects .2 % of people, with extreme (non-phobic) fear affecting up to 8 % of people. The most effective treatment for specific phobias is exposure therapy, and virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), has become a viable treatment alternative to traditional in-vivo or imaginal exposure therapy. However, using VRET to treat emetophobia has not yet been explored. We used a within-subjects, multiple-baseline-across-participants design with six participants to evaluate the emetophobia programme of oVRcome; a low-cost, Aotearoa New Ze

Extinction learning and return of fear in a large sample of children and adolescents with and without anxiety disorders.

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health problems in childhood and adolescence, highlighting the importance to study their underlying mechanisms. One key process in fear reduction, particularly in exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy, is extinction learning. While extensively studied in adults, its role in youth remains underexplored. The aim of the present study was to examine fear extinction learning and return of fear in a large sample of children and adolescents (N = 274; age range 8-16 years, M = 11.07, SD = 2.22; 55.8 % female) with separation anxiety disorder, socia

Effects of the histone deacetylase inhibitor valproic acid in combination with fear-memory retrieval before exposure therapy for spider phobia: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Return of fear after successful exposure therapy for a phobia is a common clinical challenge. A previous study on mice demonstrated that the persistent attenuation of remote fear memories can be achieved by combining histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) with fear-memory retrieval prior to extinction training. METHODS: To evaluate the translational potential of this approach, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Forty-eight individuals with DSM-IV spider phobia received either HDACi valproic acid (VPA, 500 mg) or a placebo prior to the retrieval of

Physiological and inflammatory changes to natural and skin-related trypophobic images.

INTRODUCTION: The immune system's inflammatory response, driven by pro-inflammatory proteins, protects against external threats. Fear and disgust-inducing stimuli have been linked to immune responses, yet their specific physiological and inflammatory mechanisms in trypophobia remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the inflammatory and physiological responses in relation to natural (non-skin) and skin-related trypophobic images. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty participants (n = 50) were recruited for the study, and their sensitivity to trypophobia was measured using the trypophobia question

Exploring the symptomatology and assessment of emetophobia: A comprehensive scoping review.

Emetophobia, the specific fear of vomiting, is a poorly understood anxiety disorder. Despite a growing body of research, comprehensive reviews on its presentation and assessment are limited and dated. This scoping review maps, synthesises and explores existing literature on the assessment measures and symptomatology of emetophobia. Its purpose is to inform future clinical practices by identifying reliable assessment instruments and facilitating more accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and research comparisons. Five online databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, PsyArXiy) were

Antisaccade performance in spider phobia and its association with multimodal correlates of fear.

INTRODUCTION: This study explored inhibitory control in spider phobic (SP) and healthy control (HC) individuals using an emotional antisaccade task. Attentional control theory (ACT) suggests anxiety related deficits in inhibitory control, yet studies on antisaccade performance in anxiety disordered patients are sparse. This study addressed this research gap and additionally aimed to explore putative associations of antisaccade performance with multimodal measures of fear of spiders. METHODS: A sample of 76 participants (41 SP, 35 HC) completed an antisaccade task, employing schematic pictures

Basophobia: A case report highlighting potential genetic vulnerability.

Basophobia, or space phobia, represents a rare form of specific phobia characterized by excessive fear of falling in open spaces without visible support. While familial aggregation has been documented in specific phobia generally, there are no previous reports documenting family clustering in basophobia specifically. We report the case of a 57-year-old woman who developed basophobia following a minor fall, with the notable finding of similar complaints in 30-year-old son. This case represents the first documented familial aggregation of basophobia and raises important questions about genetic v

Shared genetic etiology between specific phobia and other psychiatric disorders.

Specific phobia is a core anxiety disorder with a moderate genetic component, but its genetic background remains poorly understood. In the current study, the genetic correlations between specific phobia and other psychiatric disorders, including anxiety disorders, as well as intermediate phenotypes, were investigated. Large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics for specific phobia, indicated by International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes during primary care visits or hospital admissions (n = 502,481); 1

Threat Acquisition and Extinction Differences Between Patients With Panic Disorder or Specific Phobia and Non-Clinical Controls: A Systematic Review.

The study of threat conditioning and extinction processes in anxiety disorders (AD) may further our understanding of the genesis, maintenance, and treatment of these conditions. As it stands, there have been multiple systematic reviews carried out in this area. Patient-control differences in threat acquisition and extinction have been investigated in relation to ADs, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, this remains to be investigated in either panic disorder (PD) or specific phobia (SP). In this paper, a narrative systematic review was carried out t

Watch Out, It Bites! An Examination of Threat Information Transmission from Parents to Young Children with Specific Phobias.

Specific phobias are highly prevalent and onset as young as 3 years of age. Evidence suggests children learn fear beliefs and avoidance after being provided negative/threatening information. Little is currently known, however, about the role of information transmission in clinical samples. This study explores the role of information transmission in early onset specific phobias, as proposed by Rachman (1977), by comparing a clinical group of forty-two parents of children (aged 3 to 6 years) with specific phobia and a nonclinical group including seventeen parents of age-matched children. Parents

Postoperative Psychological Predictors for Chronic Postsurgical Pain After a Knee Arthroplasty: A Prospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is a significant adverse effect shown in around 20% of people who had undergone a knee arthroplasty (KA). Psychological risk factors have emerged as significant and potentially modifiable risk factors for its development. However, there is still little evidence when assessing these factors during the acute postoperative period. This study aimed to assess the predictive value of postoperative pain catastrophizing, pain-related fear of movement, anxiety, depression, and pain attitudes in developing CPSP after KA. METHODS: A 6-month follow-up prospecti

Initial validation of the 12-item Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia in a retrospective sample of adults with chronic headache.

INTRODUCTION: An area of emerging interest in chronic pain populations concerns fear of pain and associated fear of movement (kinesiophobia)-a cognitive appraisal pattern that is well-validated in non-headache chronic pain. However, there is limited research on whether this construct can be measured in a similar manner in headache populations. METHODS: The current project details a confirmatory factor analysis of the 12-Item Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK-12) using a clinical data set from 210 adults with diverse headache diagnoses presenting for care at a multidisciplinary pain clinic. Excessive Gag Reflex, Dental Anxiety, and Phobia of Vomiting in Dental Care.

BACKGROUND: The most known and commonly studied behavioral obstacle to dental care is dental anxiety. An obstacle that is less studied though no less problematic is excessive gag reflex, which can severely impede dental treatment. Another understudied and possibly related syndrome is emetophobia (a specific phobia of vomiting). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine possible comorbidity amongst self-reported emetophobia, dental anxiety, and excessive gagging in the dental office. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted using the following self-report questionnaires: D

Efficacy of tDCS to enhance virtual reality exposure therapy response in acrophobia: A randomized controlled trial.

[BACKGROUND]: Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has been recognized as an effective treatment for specific phobias and has the potential to overcome the limitations of traditional exposure therapy. The pursuit of non-invasive brain stimulation provides a practical means of augmenting VRET. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, stimulates the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), with the potential to enhance the effects of exposure therapy. Therefore, we conducted a randomized controlled trial to examine whether tDCS enhanced the effects of
