The impact of unhelpful pain beliefs on patient outcomes after surgically managed ankle fractures : an embedded observational study.

AIMS: To determine the distribution of unhelpful pain beliefs in patients after ankle fracture surgery and investigate their impact, along with other demographic characteristics, on postoperative recovery. METHODS: This was an observational cohort study embedded within the Weightbearing in Ankle Fractures (WAX) trial. Adults (≥ 18 years) who underwent operative fixation of unstable ankle fractures were recruited from 23 UK hospitals two weeks post-surgery. Pain beliefs were measured at baseline using the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ-2) and Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK-11). Outc

Challenging heights: Findings from a proof-of-principle randomized controlled trial testing interpretation bias modification as an adjunct to exposure therapy for acrophobic patients.

Exposure is highly effective for treating acrophobia and there is growing consensus that cognitive mechanisms play an important role in exposure-based therapies. The present randomized controlled trial investigated whether adding a Cognitive Bias Modification - Interpretation (CBM-I) training to a single-session exposure therapy further facilitates cognitive change. The sample included diagnosed acrophobia patients (N = 81), all of whom received exposure therapy. One day later they were randomized to receive either CBM-I or a sham training. The CBM-I trained patients to interpret and appraise

Perturbation Training for Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

CONTEXT: Trunk-stabilization exercises, especially when performed under unstable conditions, may be beneficial for low back pain (LBP) and related symptoms. However, more evidence is needed to determine whether adding a perturbation component to the training program contributes to greater improvement. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of perturbation training on trunk-muscle endurance, disability, pain, functional mobility, quality of life, fear-avoidance beliefs, and satisfaction in patients with nonspecific LBP. DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. SETTING: Physiotherapy labora

Development and psychometric validation of the insect fear questionnaire for school-aged children in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Insect-related fear (Entomophobia) is prevalent in children and affects their behavior and well-being, avoidance behaviors, and potentially hazardous practices such as inappropriate pesticide use. While many tools exist for measuring fear in adults, there is a lack of validated instruments for school-aged children. This study aimed to develop and validate a questionnaire assessing knowledge, entomophobia, behavior, and anxiety about insects among school-aged children in East Azerbaijan, Iran. METHODS: This psychometric study involved a multi-stage stratified random sampling design

Fear of Death in Patients With Severe Eating Disorders Experiencing Life-Threatening Medical Crises.

BACKGROUND: Fearlessness about death, an essential component of suicide capability, remains understudied in the context of actual death-related experiences, whether suicidal in nature or not. One population in which both suicidal intent and desire and life-threatening states are relevant is eating disorder patients in potentially lethal medical crises. METHODS: We examined changes in fear of death across hospitalization in a sample of 84 severely malnourished patients, diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (93%) or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (7%), undergoing intensive treatment for s

Social identities reduce self-focused attention in social anxiety.

Self-focused attention is a maintaining factor in social anxiety disorder and a key target in treatment. Yet, current cognitive behavioural conceptualisations of social anxiety focus on intra-psychological determinants and thus do not consider social processes that might be associated with self-focused attention. We investigated whether participants' multiple group memberships (internalised as social identities) protected against self-focused attention in two studies. These studies assessed the link between social anxiety (both trait- and state-level), social identities and self-focused attent

Right DLPFC stimulation attenuates negative evaluation in social anxiety: An rTMS study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is characterized by excessive fear generalization to social evaluation. Although rTMS shows promise in modulating anxiety, its effects on negative evaluation in social anxiety remain unclear. This study investigated if rTMS targeting the right DLPFC could modulate negative evaluation expectancy in individuals with high social anxiety. METHODS: Using a randomized controlled design, 33 individuals with high social anxiety (LSAS ≥38) were randomly assigned to rTMS (n = 15) or sham (n = 18) groups. Single-session 1 Hz rTMS (1200 pulses, 80% RMT) was applied to the right

Love is a losing game: The experience of romantic love in social anxiety disorder.

The present study aimed to examine the temporal relationship between the experience of love and subsequent anxiety among individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD, n = 44), panic disorder (PD, n = 29), and a control group with neither disorder (n = 43). Using a daily diary design, participants completed measures of emotions for 21 consecutive days. Using multilevel linear modeling, we found that individuals with SAD reported significantly lower levels of love compared to the other groups (B = 0.623; SE = 0.053; p < .001; 95% Bootstrapped CI = 0.513-0.722; Cohen's d = 0.34). All-cause and cause-specific mortality in social anxiety disorder: a matched cohort and sibling cohort study.

AIMS: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most common anxiety disorders and is associated with significant impairment and societal costs. The association between SAD and mortality remains poorly understood, partly because in epidemiological research it is rarely studied independently from other anxiety disorders. In this population-based matched cohort and sibling control study, we estimated the risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in individuals with SAD. METHODS: From a population of individuals born from 1932 and living in Sweden between 1997 and 2020, we identified all c

Psychological Factors Are Associated With Lower Limb Kinematics During Uphill Walking and Running in Women With Patellofemoral Pain.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a common condition in women and is associated with high recurrence rates. Kinematic alterations are among the factors that may persist even after muscle strengthening programs. Given the multifactorial nature of PFP, non-mechanical factors, such as kinesiophobia, may be related to the movement patterns adopted by this population. This study aimed to investigate the associations between kinesiophobia, pain-related factors, and lower limb kinematics during uphill walking and treadmill running in women with PFP. METHODS: This was a cross-secti

The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as a potential target for electrical stimulation in the treatment of vestibular-based nausea.

As a result of its location (facilitating ease of access) and its multimodal nature, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) is a commonly targeted site for transcranial electrical and magnetic stimulation in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. However, this cortical region has many interconnections throughout the brain, overlapping with other systems. One such example is the vestibular system. Starting at the vestibular organs within the inner ear, the vestibular system plays a major role in nauseogenic responses, and many vestibular disorders do not have well-documented treatment plan

Efficacy of transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders on insomnia.

INTRODUCTION: The efficacy of transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy (tCBT) for anxiety disorders (AD) is well established. Few studies have investigated the role of insomnia in the context of tCBT for AD. Considering the high prevalence of insomnia symptoms in individuals with AD, this study aims to explore the effects of tCBT on insomnia, as well as to examine the predictive or moderating role of insomnia on the efficacy of tCBT for AD. METHOD: The present study consists of a secondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial of tCBT for AD (Roberge et al., 2022). The 231 par

Prognostic implications of social anxiety comorbidity in major depressive disorder. Evidence from three large samples with adult and older patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) frequently co-occurs with major depressive disorder (MDD). We examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of SAD across three heterogeneous MDD cohorts. METHODS: Secondary analyses were conducted in adult (CO-MED: n = 482; GSRD: n = 1398) and late-life (IRL-GREY: n = 438) patients. SAD was assessed dimensionally (PDSQ) and categorically (MINI; SCID-1). Cohort-specific instruments were used to assess depressive severity (QIDS; MADRS), suicidality (CHRT; MADRS; SIS) and hypomanic symptoms (ASRM; YMRS). In late-life depression, neurocognit

Modifying dysfunctional beliefs in social anxiety disorder with an emotion-focused approach-avoidance modification training - a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Dysfunctional beliefs play an important role in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Modifying the appraisal of such beliefs may be facilitated through emotion-based approach-avoidance modification trainings (eAAMTs). This study aimed to examine the feasibility and therapeutic potential of an eAAMT for SAD in a randomized-controlled pilot-study. METHOD: N = 30 participants with SAD were randomly allocated to an eAAMT-SAD, a non-active control condition, or a swipe-control condition (n = 28 analyzed). Participants in the eAAMT-SAD-condition received four 30-min-sessions of eAAMT-SAD withi
