The authors used structural equation modeling to examine expressed emotion (EE) in relatives of outpatients with panic disorder with agoraphobia (n = 42) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 60). EE was examined as a function of patients' illness and personality and as a function of characteristics of relatives themselves. EE was operationalized in terms of hostility on the Camberwell Family Interview (C. E. Vaughn & J. P. Leff, 1976) and patients' ratings of their relatives' criticism (perceived criticism). Key findings include the identification of a characteristic of the relative (self-rep

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to achieve the following two objectives: First, it sought to examine the rates of sexual abuse in Palestinian society at three ages (12 years or less, 12-16 years, and 16 + years) by three perpetrators (a family member, a relative, and a stranger). Second, the study sought to assess some psychological implications of sexual victimization.
METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 652 Palestinian undergraduate students from the Palestinian Authority. A revised version of Finkelhor's scale was utilized to measure sexual abuse, and a revised and culturally

In this paper the author aims to evaluate theories of onset conditions both before psychological and before somatic symptoms by the first ever clinical-quantitative assessment of their preconditions, and then to compare these preconditions with Freud (1926) and with other theories of symptom formation. The seven cases in the sample were the only cases of recorded psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, each with recurrent symptoms in segments of sessions before symptoms versus segments of sessions before controls (with no symptoms) that were suitable for 'the symptom-context method'. The recurrent ps

In the following article, data of the symptom checklist SCL-90-R (Derogatis 1986) for elderly people are introduced, including an estimation of the controlling factors on psychological complaints in old age. The representative sample is based on 394 persons aged 61 to 96; their psychological complaints have been studied with respect to SCL-90-R. Evidently elderly people did not state an increasing load on psychological complaints, but a different structure of psychological symptoms. Therefore with increasing age the scales "Somatization", "Obsessive-compulsive" and "Phobic anxiety" increase, w

BACKGROUND: Several previous studies have established that miscarriage is a risk factor for depressive symptoms and disorder. By contrast, research on miscarriage as a possible risk factor for anxiety symptoms is inconclusive, and for anxiety disorders, sparse and uninformative. The current study examines the incidence of and relative risk for 3 DSM-III anxiety disorders (obsessive-compulsive disorder [OCD], panic disorder, and phobic disorders) within the 6 months following miscarriage. Adequate diagnostic data on other anxiety disorders were not available.
METHOD: Using a cohort design, we

The aim of our study was to observe the induction of panic attacks by hyperventilation in a group of panic disorder and social phobia patients (DSM-IV). We randomly selected 26 panic disorder patients, 22 social phobics and 25 normal volunteers. They were drug-free for 1 week. Hyperventilation (30 breaths/min) was induced for 3 min. Anxiety scales were taken before and after the test. 61.5% (n = 16) of panic disorder patients, 22.7% (n = 5) of social phobics and 4.0% (n = 1) of control subjects had a panic attack after hyperventilating (p < 0.01, panic disorder vs. control; p < 0.05, panic dis

OBJECTIVE: Because hyperventilation has figured prominently in theories of panic disorder (PD) but not of social phobia (SP), we compared predictions regarding diagnosis-specific differences in psychological and physiological measures before, during, and after voluntary hyperventilation.
METHOD: Physiological responses were recorded in 14 patients with PD, 24 patients with SP, and 24 controls during six cycles of 1-minute of fast breathing alternating with 1 minute of recovery, followed by 3 minutes of fast breathing and 10 minutes of recovery. Speed of fast breathing was paced by a tone modu

The examination included 35 patients (21 women, 14 men, mean age 47.2 +/- 2.4 years) with anxious-phobic disorders (APD) and dyspnea phenomena combined bronchial asthma (BA) and hyperventilation syndrome (HVS). There was established that APD in these cases develops more frequently similarly to the panic attacks (PA) and HVS was PA component. Three PA types with dyspnea phenomena were recognized: cognitive ones (with prevalence of cognitive anxiety--8 cases); somatized PA (with prevalence of somatized anxiety--18 cases) and PA with both cognitive and somatized anxiety (9 cases). PA of the first

BACKGROUND: Although studies have been published regarding airline in-flight medical emergencies, there is a lack of any specific studies about in-flight psychiatric emergencies. This study seeks to ascertain the incidence of in-flight psychiatric emergencies, their associated factors, and outcomes.
METHODS: All in-flight calls for physician consultation to MedAire, a leading medical resource for airlines, during 1997 were reviewed for psychiatric symptomatology.
RESULTS: Of 1375 consultations, 3.5% were characterized as psychiatric, with a large majority (90%) of these cases presenting prim

In this study, patients with panic disorder (PD) who suffered nocturnal panic (NP) attacks were compared with PD patients who never experienced NP attacks and healthy controls. Three tasks were chosen to evaluate attention to cardiac cues, reactivity to induction of respiratory cues, and reactivity to relaxation cues. Relative to healthy controls, PD groups reported more fear of all three tasks and showed more physiological arousal in response to the hyperventilation task. The only task on which the two PD groups differed was the relaxation task, where nocturnal panickers were significantly mo

What have these studies revealed about SAD? First, few studies have been performed so far, with even fewer replications. Most of the work has been exploratory in nature and follows the paradigms used in PD. This approach has been justifiably criticized. The use of psychological (naturalistic) challenges may be more appropriate in SP than chemical challenges. The paradigms of public speaking, autobiographical scripts, or similar behavioral challenges merit further use, exploration, and validation if symptoms resembling those of the condition proper are to be induced in experimental circumstance

Breath malodour is a condition that has health and social implications. The origin of breath malodour problems are related to both systemic and oral conditions. The advice of dental professionals for treatment of this condition occurs with regularity since 90% of breath odor problems emanate from the oral cavity. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the etiology of breath odor, its prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for the condition.

Bad breath (oral malodor, halitosis) can be detrimental to one's self-image and confidence causing social, emotional, and psychological anxiety. With the majority of breath problems having an oral origin, the dental office is the most logical place for patients to seek treatment. When patients look to dental professionals for expert advice, it is critical they have the knowledge base and communication techniques to provide quality clinical assessment and implement effective intervention programs. Moreover, dental professionals should feel comfortable proactively counseling patients about oral

UNLABELLED: The interferon alpha stands as a reference both in oncology and virology. But its efficiency is limited by frequent somatic as well as neuropsychic side effects. As a matter of fact, the reduction or the ending of a chemotherapy treatment come chiefly from the psychiatric complications caused by the use of interferon. For about 30% of patients, various psychic disorders are noticed: personality disorders, mood disorders, anxiety states, suicidal tendencies, manic and psychotic symptoms. We thus propose a review which shall be completed by a discussion on wether the interferon is re

A duplication of part of chromosome 15q, apparently inherited in a non-Mendelian fashion, has been found to be strongly associated with phobic disorders. This unusual genetic mechanism may partly explain the heritability of phobias and other complex traits.

OBJECTIVES: To study the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity assessed by the use of a structured clinical interview in a large, representative sample of patients with spasmodic torticollis (ST) and to test the hypothesis that social phobia would be highly prevalent.
METHODS: In a consecutive cohort of 116 patients with ST treated with botulinum toxin overall psychiatric comorbidity was studied prospectively with the structured clinical interview (SCID) for DSM-IV axis I disorders. Physical disability and psychosocial variables were also assessed with standardised self rating questionnaires.

OBJECTIVE: To study the rationales for food refusal among Chinese patients with typical and atypical anorexia nervosa.
METHOD: Forty-eight consecutive patients with broadly defined anorexia nervosa underwent evaluation with a self-report rationale for food refusal questionnaire, the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-21), the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), and other clinical assessments.
RESULTS: Fat-phobic patients (N = 32) had a significantly higher premorbid body mass index than non-fat-phobic patients (N = 16), but they did
