Exploring Social Media Use and Anxiety Symptoms in Health Care Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-Sectional Secondary Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) experienced significant mental health challenges, particularly anxiety, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although social media became a primary source of information and connection, it was also a potential source of stress. The influence of social media on HCWs' anxiety is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between social media use and anxiety symptoms among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a secondary, cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2021 UC-COVID study (N=427 HCWs). Anxiety symptoms were ass

Longitudinal associations between loneliness and outcomes of Common Mental Disorders (CMDs): A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has been increasingly associated with poor mental health outcomes, yet its prognostic role in people with Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to examine whether loneliness is longitudinally associated with mental health outcomes in individuals with CMDs, regardless of treatment status. METHODS: We searched PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Embase and CINAHL from inception to October 2025 for longitudinal studies examining associations between baseline loneliness and CMD outcomes at follow-up. Eligible studies included adults aged 16+ with CMDs.

Impact of Information Overload on Fear of Disease Progression in Surgical Patients: Serial Mediation by Decisional Conflict and Generalized Anxiety.

This study investigates how information overload influences fear of disease progression among 579 surgical patients at a tertiary hospital in China, specifically examining the independent and serial mediating effects of decisional conflict and generalized anxiety. Using validated scales and a chain mediation model with bias-corrected bootstrapping, the results demonstrate that information overload significantly predicts increased decisional conflict, anxiety, and fear of disease progression. Path analysis confirmed a significant direct effect of information overload on fear, while also identif

Gender differences in the association between anxiety and behavioral problems in 31,400 Chinese children: a cross-sectional regression and network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Child anxiety and behavioral problems are significant global public health concerns. Traditional methods often fail to capture intricate symptom interactions. This study used network analysis to explore the relationship between anxiety and behavioral problems, focusing on gender differences in a large sample of Chinese children. METHODS: Data from 31,400 students (aged 9-16) were analyzed. Anxiety and behavioral problems were assessed using SCARED and PSQ. To control for developmental variance, symptom domains were residualized against chronological age prior to network estimation

Nonoperative Management Is Associated With an Increased Risk of Adverse Mental Health Conditions in Elderly Patients With Distal Radius Fractures: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous research comparing operative versus nonoperative management of distal radius fractures in elderly patients has reported similar functional outcomes, leaving treatment decisions controversial. However, limited studies have analyzed how these approaches impact the mental well-being of patients. The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of mental health conditions during the 1-year post-injury period following operative and nonoperative treatment. METHODS: A retrospective query of the TriNetX database identified patients 65 years and older with distal radius frac

Wearable Health-Tracking Devices and Adherence to Physical Activity Guidelines Among US Adults, Including Those with Elevated Anxiety Symptoms: A Nationally Representative Cross-Sectional Analysis of HINTS 7 (2024).

Physical activity is a pillar of lifestyle medicine, yet most US adults do not meet aerobic guidelines, and inactivity is especially common among people with anxiety. Wearables enable self-monitoring, but population-level evidence linking them to guideline adherence among distressed adults is limited. We analyzed 6686 adults from the nationally representative Health Information National Trends Survey 7 (2024). The outcome was meeting the aerobic guideline (≥150 weekly minutes of at least moderate-intensity activity); the exposure was wearable device use for health tracking. Elevated anxiety wa

The Descriptive Epidemiology of Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder in Australia 2020-22: Prevalence, Correlates, Age of Onset and Changes Over Time.

Panic disorder is highly debilitating and contributes a significant amount to anxiety-related disability-adjusted life years globally. To understand this burden, the current study provides an up-to-date understanding of the descriptive epidemiology of panic attacks and panic disorder in the Australian population. Data were from the most recent 2020-2022 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing, a large-scale population-based study conducted in Australian households with respondents aged 16-85 years of age (n = 15,893). Panic attacks and panic disorder experienced across the lifetime, wit

Prospective associations of cortisol dynamics and daily stress with depression, generalized anxiety, and panic disorder symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Flatter diurnal cortisol decline indicates hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation and has been longitudinally related to major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic disorder (PD) symptoms. However, given high heterogeneity in the relationship between diurnal cortisol and future common mental health symptoms, the moderators of these long-term prospective associations remain unclear. METHOD: This secondary data analysis of the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) used a longitudinal nine-year sample of community-dwellin

Anxiety sensitivity as a transdiagnostic risk factor and mechanism of change in the treatment of youth anxiety disorders and OCD: Findings from the Unified Protocols for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

Anxiety sensitivity, or fear of anxiety-related symptoms, is a "core dysfunction" associated with the development and maintenance of youth anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Accordingly, anxiety sensitivity is a common target of transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions, like the Unified Protocols for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children and Adolescents (UP-C/A). However, no studies have empirically evaluated anxiety sensitivity as a mechanism of symptom change within UP-C/A treatment. This study examined anxiety sensitivit

Comparison of specialized mental healthcare utilization among Syrian refugees and the general Norwegian population: A longitudinal, registry-based cohort study on PTSD, mood disorders, and anxiety and fear-related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Refugees face elevated mental health risks, yet large cohort studies suggest lower use of specialist mental health services. Most studies focus on younger groups and rarely examine changes in use over time. We compared specialist mental healthcare use between Syrian refugees and the general Norwegian population during the first three years after residency, an important early resettlement period. METHODS: We linked Norwegian Patient Registry and Statistics Norway data for 10,165 Syrian refugees (≥18 years) and 8424 individuals from the general Norwegian population, followed for thr

Post-stroke depression, but not anxiety, is independently associated with executive and visuospatial function: A five-year longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke anxiety and depression frequently co-occur, and whether each is independently associated with cognitive impairment remains unclear because most studies model one without adjusting for the other. In a five-year cohort, we tested whether anxiety and depression have distinct cognitive correlates and whether 6-month affective status predicted subsequent cognitive recovery. METHODS: Patients from the STROKDEM cohort (n = 191) were assessed at 6, 12, 36, and 60 months post-stroke for anxiety, depression, and five cognitive domains (memory, executive functioning, attention, v

Mental health risk stratification using heart rate variability and prefrontal electroencephalography: eXtreme gradient boosting-based classifier and latent class analysis-based subtyping.

Heart rate variability (HRV) and electroencephalography (EEG) are reflective of cardiac autonomic modulation/emotional regulation and cortical brain activity/psychopathology, respectively. This study aimed to determine the key HRV/prefrontal EEG classifiers of healthy controls (HC) versus patients with psychiatric disorders (PT) and to identify the subtypes of these features. A simultaneous 5-min-long acquisition of earlobe photoplethysmography and resting-state prefrontal EEG signals was performed in 147 HC and 123 PT [major depressive disorder (MDD; N = 107) and panic disorder (N = 16)].
