Legionella pneumophila typically manifests in two distinct clinical forms: Legionnaires' disease, characterized by severe pneumonia, and Pontiac fever (PF), a non-pneumonic, influenza-like illness that is usually self-limiting within 2-5 days. While PF is characterized by a high attack rate among exposed individuals in outbreak settings, its true incidence remains unknown and is likely underdiagnosed. Consequently, in routine surveillance data, Legionnaires' disease accounts for the vast majority of reported Legionella infections, with PF representing only a negligible fraction. We report a ra

Spermatogenesis, a core process for male fertility, relies heavily on chromatin organization regulated by histone acetyltransferases (HATs). However, the spatiotemporal expression pattern of histone acetyltransferase 1 (Hat1) in mouse testes and its specific role in spermatogenesis via chromatin organization remain unclear. This study employed RT-qPCR, Western blot, immunofluorescence localization, and bioinformatics to explore Hat1's dynamic expression and regulatory mechanisms during mouse spermatogenesis. Results showed that both Hat1 mRNA and protein were significantly upregulated in the t

Legionellosis is a generic term describing the pneumonic (Legionnaires' disease, LD) and non-pneumonic (Pontiac fever, PF) forms of infection with bacteria belonging to the genus Legionella. Currently, the techniques used to detect Legionella spp. in water samples have certain limitations and drawbacks, and thus, there is a need to identify new tools to carry out low-cost and rapid analysis. In this regard, several studies demonstrated that a volatolomics approach rapidly detects and discriminates different species of microorganisms via their volatile signature. In this paper, the volatile org

Legionellosis is the infection caused by bacteria of the genus Legionella, including a non-pneumonic influenza-like syndrome, and Legionnaires' disease is a more serious illness characterized by pneumonia. Legionellosis is becoming increasingly important as a public health problem throughout the world; although it is an underreported disease, studies have consistently documented a high incidence. In addition, health costs associated with the disease are high. Diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease is based mainly on the detection of Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen in urine. However, the

Infection due to Legionella pneumophila has been not studied in Colombia, although it is present. The observational, retrospective study in which the incidence of legionellosis in Colombia, 2009-2013, was estimated based on data extracted from the personal health records system (Registro Individual de Prestación de Servicios, RIPS) using the ICD-10 codes A48.1 (Legionnaires' disease) and A48.2 (Pontiac Fever). Using official population estimates of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), crude and adjusted incidence rates were estimated (cases / 100,000 pop). During the pe

AIM: To examine the evidence on the association between cannabis and depression and evaluate competing explanations of the association.
METHODS: A search of Medline, Psychinfo and EMBASE databases was conducted. All references in which the terms 'cannabis', 'marijuana' or 'cannabinoid', and in which the words 'depression/depressive disorder/depressed', 'mood', 'mood disorder' or 'dysthymia' were collected. Only research studies were reviewed. Case reports are not discussed.
RESULTS: There was a modest association between heavy or problematic cannabis use and depression in cohort studies and

BACKGROUND: Legionella pneumophila is a pathogenic bacterium that can cause Legionnaires' disease and other non-pneumonic infections in humans. This bacterium produces a pyomelanin pigment, a potential virulence factor with ferric reductase activity. In this work, we have investigated the role of phenylalanine hydroxylase from L. pneumophila (lpPAH), the product of the phhA gene, in the synthesis of the pyomelanin pigment and the growth of the bacterium in defined compositions.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Comparative studies of wild-type and phhA mutant corroborate that lpPAH provides the

Previous outbreaks of Pontiac fever have invariably been associated with water droplet spread of Legionella spp. In January 2007 three workers from a horticultural nursery were admitted to hospital with non-pneumonic legionellosis. Investigations showed that a working party of ten people had been exposed to aerosolized potting mix; nine of these workers met the case definition for Pontiac fever. The presence of genetically indistinguishable Legionella longbeachae serogroup 2 was demonstrated in clinical specimens from two hospitalized workers and in the potting mix to which they had been expos

Legionella are widespread in natural aquatic environments and are able to exist in water of different temperatures, pH level, and nutrient and oxygen content. Their occurrence in nature can be attributed to their relationships with other microorganisms. When Legionella co-exist with algae and other bacteria, especially in biofilms, the availability of nutrients increases. They also are able to infect protozoa and subsequently reproduce within these organisms. As a result of these relationships, Legionella are protected against adverse conditions, including standard water disinfection technique

A sporadic case of Legionnaires' disease was linked to travel on a cruise ship. Investigation identified two further cases of Legionnaires' Disease and one case of non-pneumonic Legionella infection. An Incident Team confirmed the source to be the ship's water system and control measures were instituted that included pasteurisation, super chlorination and chlorine dioxide dosing. The Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC), through the European Surveillance Scheme for Travel Associated Legionnaires' Disease, identified three previous cases associ

Pontiac fever is a non-pneumonic, epidemic form of legionellosis. The symptoms are similar to flu: fever, tiredness, myalgia, arthralgia, headache, cough, sore throat and nausea. The incubation period is from 30 to 90 hours, approx. 36 h., the attack rate is high: 70-90%. There are no differences in sex and age of ill people, the same number of women and men or children were affected. Unfortunately, ill children symptoms might be differ: higher fever (40 C), lack of leukocytosis with left shift, shorten incubation period. The etiological agents are usually bacteria: Legionella pneumophila sg 1

Over one hundred cases of legionnaires' disease have been linked to ships, and ten cases are known to have died. Most of the cases were associated with cruise ships, but a variety of other vessels were also linked to cases. Few vessels were investigated microbiologically, and the cases associated with ferries were exposed to other sources of infection. Cases appear to be less common among crew members than among passengers. To prevent further cases, ship owners, operators, and captains need to be diligent in maintaining the water and air conditioning systems of their vessels. Whirlpool spas ne

Legionellosis is a contagious disease occurring either sporadically or more frequently in outbreaks, the infections being caused by members of the family Legionellaceae. The disease may show two clinical forms, i.e.: 1) the pneumonic form characterized by fever, pulmonary, neurologic and often hepatic and renal affections, severe evolution and high mortality rate; and 2) non-pneumonic form similar to influenza infection. Occurrence of the disease was mentioned almost all over the world its incidence in Europe reaching 1-3%. The infection sources are: warm water supply systems of hospitals, hot

One hundred and sixty cases of legionnaires' disease were reported to the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre in 1995. Twenty cases (13%) were known to have died. Ninety cases (56%) were associated with travel (in the United Kingdom or abroad), four were associated with a stay in hospital, and the remaining 66 were presumed to have acquired infection in the community. One hundred and twenty-three cases (77%) occurred sporadically. Three community outbreaks and one outbreak at an industrial site were detected in England and Wales. One outbreak and five clusters were detected among vis

Organisms of the bacterial genus Legionella, commonly found in aqueous reservoirs, have been associated with Legionnaires' disease (legionella pneumonia, caused by Legionella pneumophila) and Pontiac fever (nonpneumonic legionellosis). EnviroAmp Legionella sample preparation, polymerase chain reaction amplification, and detection kits (Perkin-Elmer Corp.) were developed for rapid detection of DNA from organisms of the genus Legionella and the species L. pneumophila from environmental water samples. The kits are based on molecular techniques incorporating polymerase chain reaction amplification

Using a microagglutination test, the prevalence of antibodies against three species (10 groups) of Legionella was determined in 300 healthy donors, 120 non-pneumonic patients with immunodeficiency and 158 patients with pneumonia. The results showed that there were significant differences among all groups on positive rate and GMT in three groups. Lp6 was the highest, Lp1 and Lp8 came second. There were significant differences among three groups in positive rate and GMT to Lp1, Lp2, Lp6 and Lp8, in the group of patients with pneumonia was highest, the group of non-pneumonic patients with immunod

In 1988, there were two outbreaks of legionellosis in Bolton Health District. Altogether 37 cases of Legionnaires' disease and 23 cases of non-pneumonic legionellosis were identified. Twenty-five patients with Legionnaires' disease were associated with an engineering plant, 4 with Bolton town centre, and 8 with both the plant and town centre. Twenty-two people with non-pneumonic legionellosis were linked with the engineering plant and one with the plant and the town centre. A case-control study carried out among 37 employees with legionellosis and 109 control subjects at the plant showed that

Analysis of case histories from 187 people who had visited a hotel and leisure complex in Lochgoilhead, a village on the west coast of Scotland, indicated that 170 had had an acute illness characterised by headache, fatigue, arthralgia, myalgia, cough, and breathlessness. These symptoms were consistent with Pontiac fever-like illness. Legionella micdadei was isolated from the leisure complex whirlpool spa at the time that 60 of 72 individuals with symptoms seroconverted to L micdadei antigen. This outbreak is thought to be the first of a Pontiac fever-like illness ascribed to L micdadei and th

Between 11 November 1986 and 28 February 1987, legionellosis was diagnosed in 23 patients at one hospital with a recently marketed Legionella-specific DNA probe for respiratory secretions. Only 10 of the 23 probe-positive patients showed findings typical of Legionella pneumonia, including a temperature of greater than or equal to 100.5 degrees F (approximately 38.1 degrees C) and radiographic evidence of pneumonia. No differences were found in the results of laboratory studies, demographic features, or underlying risk factors for these 10 probe-positive patients when compared with the 13 probe

A case of non-pneumonic legionellosis with gastrointestinal manifestations is described in a 13-year-old boy without premorbidity. A selective defect in monocyte oxidative metabolism was found and consistently demonstrated throughout the following year. We suggest that the observed monocyte deficiency may have facilitated the development of legionnaires disease and that otherwise normal monocyte function may have contributed to the favourable course of disease.
