Hematohidrosis or hematidrosis is a rare condition in which a human being sweats blood. Psychogenic cause is found to be the most frequent cause among other causes such as systemic disease and vicarious menstruation. This is a case report of a 10-year-old girl with oozing of blood from intact skin of scalp. Underlying intense fear secondary to psychosocial stressor was identified and a provisional diagnosis of mixed anxiety and depressive disorder was made. Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy were followed by complete remission. It was inferred from this experience that hematohidrosis is a treat

Self-inflicted penetrating injuries have been very rarely described in the medical literature. We describe a middle-aged woman, who had driven a long knife inside her skull with the help of a brick. She had done this to get relief from chronic headache, which was troubling her for 10 years. Patient was hemodynamically stable and had Glassgow Coma scale score of 15. She was immediately operated to remove the knife and evacuate the acute subdural hematoma. Patient made a steady postoperative recovery. Psychiatric and neurological evaluation in the postoperative period revealed features of mixed

Subthreshold psychiatric disorders do not fully meet the diagnostic criteria of syndromal disorders but may be associated with comparable disability. To investigate the anxiolytic effect of Silexan, an active substance from lavender oil for oral administration, in patients with subthreshold anxiety, a meta-analysis that included all published trials with Silexan in this indication was performed. Three randomised, placebo-controlled trials in subthreshold anxiety disorders (anxiety disorder not otherwise specified, restlessness and agitation, mixed anxiety and depressive disorder) were included

According to ICD-10 criteria, mixed anxiety and depressive disorder (MADD) is characterized by co-occurring, subsyndromal symptoms of anxiety and depression, severe enough to justify a psychiatric diagnosis, but neither of which are clearly predominant. MADD appears to be very common, particularly in primary care, although prevalence estimates vary, often depending on the diagnostic criteria applied. It has been associated with similarly pronounced distress, impairment of daily living skills, and reduced health-related quality of life as fully syndromal depression and anxiety. Although about h

PURPOSE: The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index is used to evaluate subjective sleep quality, and it is commonly used in clinical research. Subjective sleep quality is also an important clinical measure in patients with psychiatric disorders. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Hungarian version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-HUN) in both clinical and non-clinical samples.
METHODS: The original version of PSQI was translated into Hungarian according to standard guidelines. The PSQI-HUN and the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) were subsequently

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have reported that the prevalence of late life anxiety disorders varies between 3.2% and 15.3%. Despite its high prevalence, anxiety disorders are still under-recognized in old age. This study evaluated the association among health, psychosocial factors, lifestyle choices, cognitive function and anxiety disorders in the older population in Hong Kong.
METHODS: Six hundred and thirteen volunteer participants aged 60 years or above were interviewed for their socio-demographic background, physical and mental health statuses, social network, cognitive function and thei

BACKGROUND: The parasite Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) may invade the brain and might induce behavioral changes. We sought to determine the association of T. gondii infection and mixed anxiety and depressive disorder.
METHODS: Through an age- and gender-matched case-control seroprevalence study, we examined 65 patients suffering from mixed anxiety and depressive disorder (WHO ICD-10 code: F41.2) attending in a public hospital of mental health and 260 control subjects without this disorder from the general population. Sera of participants were analyzed for anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodie

PURPOSE: Data on mental disorder prevalence and health service utilization required to inform healthcare management and planning are lacking in Hong Kong. The current study determined the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMD), and examined the patterns of mental health service utilization and associated factors.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Hong Kong Mental Morbidity Survey (HKMMS) of 5,719 Chinese adults aged 16-75 years in the general Hong Kong population, using the Chinese Revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R).
RESULTS: The weighted prevalence estimate for any past-week

Mixed anxiety and depressive disorder (MADD; ICD-10 F41.2) is a condition characterized by subsyndromal symptoms of anxiety and depression, neither of which are clearly predominant. Silexan has been demonstrated to be efficacious in subsyndromal and syndromal anxiety disorders and co-morbid depressive symptoms. In this study 318 adult out-patients with MADD according to ICD-10 criteria, a total score ≥18 points on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), and at least moderately severe anxious and depressed mood were randomized and received 1×80mg Silexan or placebo in double-blind fashion for

BACKGROUND: Collaborative care is a complex intervention based on chronic disease management models and is effective in the management of depression. However, there is still uncertainty about which components of collaborative care are effective. We used meta-regression to identify factors in collaborative care associated with improvement in patient outcomes (depressive symptoms) and the process of care (use of anti-depressant medication).
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Systematic review with meta-regression. The Cochrane Collaboration Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Group trials registers were search

BACKGROUND: Although bereavement is accompanied with depression and anxiety symptoms, it is usually not associated with increased rates of mental disorders in North American and European samples. Data from low- and middle-income countries are, however, scarce. We therefore explored the prevalence of mental disorders after bereavement in Brazil.
METHODS: The Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised (CIS-R) was used for psychiatric assessment of 15,105 participants from the Brazilian Health Longitudinal Study (ELSA-Brasil). We asked whether the participant suffered loss of a first-degree relative/sp

BACKGROUND: Although chronic fatigue is common in old age, the association between chronic fatigue and common affective disorders is largely unknown.
AIMS: To fill this research gap, the present study aims to determine the relationship between chronic fatigue and common psychiatric disorders among older adults aged 65 and older.
METHOD: A national representative sample of 1793 England community-dwelling respondents aged 65 and above was assessed in the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) using the Revised Clinical Interview Schedule to measure chronic fatigue and common psychiatri

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are common in our industrialised society and inevitably affect the working population. Over the last few years greater attention has been focussed on work-related psychopathologies due to an increasing number of studies regarding workplace bullying.
OBJECTIVES: This study reports our observations on patients with mental disorders who came to our Occupational Health Centre because they perceived themselves to be victims of negative working conditions. An indepth analysis of their working conditions led us to the conclusion that many of these disorders were to be at

OBJECTIVE: Chronic arsenic poisoning (Arsenicosis) is a global health risk, and it has been reported to improve the fitness, especially in altitudinal sickness in therapeutic dose. Scarcity of systematic study on psychiatric co-morbidities in Arsenicosis motivated us to conduct this research. The aim of this study was to estimate the co-morbid psychiatric disorders in patients with arsenicosis and to examine whether natural arsenic exposure and toxicity is protective or detrimental for mental health.
METHOD: Out of 1477 arsenicosis patients aged 18 to 65 years, 1169 were finally assessed afte
