BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) experienced significant mental health challenges, particularly anxiety, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although social media became a primary source of information and connection, it was also a potential source of stress. The influence of social media on HCWs' anxiety is not well understood.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between social media use and anxiety symptoms among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary, cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2021 UC-COVID study (N=427 HCWs). Anxiety symptoms were ass

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has been increasingly associated with poor mental health outcomes, yet its prognostic role in people with Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) remains unclear. This systematic review aimed to examine whether loneliness is longitudinally associated with mental health outcomes in individuals with CMDs, regardless of treatment status.
METHODS: We searched PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Embase and CINAHL from inception to October 2025 for longitudinal studies examining associations between baseline loneliness and CMD outcomes at follow-up. Eligible studies included adults aged 16+ with CMDs.

BACKGROUND: Refugees face elevated mental health risks, yet large cohort studies suggest lower use of specialist mental health services. Most studies focus on younger groups and rarely examine changes in use over time. We compared specialist mental healthcare use between Syrian refugees and the general Norwegian population during the first three years after residency, an important early resettlement period.
METHODS: We linked Norwegian Patient Registry and Statistics Norway data for 10,165 Syrian refugees (≥18 years) and 8424 individuals from the general Norwegian population, followed for thr

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke anxiety and depression frequently co-occur, and whether each is independently associated with cognitive impairment remains unclear because most studies model one without adjusting for the other. In a five-year cohort, we tested whether anxiety and depression have distinct cognitive correlates and whether 6-month affective status predicted subsequent cognitive recovery.
METHODS: Patients from the STROKDEM cohort (n = 191) were assessed at 6, 12, 36, and 60 months post-stroke for anxiety, depression, and five cognitive domains (memory, executive functioning, attention, v

Real-time fMRI neurofeedback (rt-fMRI-nf) is an endogenous neuromodulation approach whereby individuals are taught to self-regulate their own neural activity in the moment. Cognitive control in emotional contexts is related to risk for or protection against mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or posttraumatic stress disorder. The left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) has been shown to be centrally important in facilitating emotional cognitive control (ECC). Using a double-blind randomized controlled trial design, the present study tested a novel rt-fMRI-nf protocol to i

Early adolescence is a common period of onset for depressive symptoms. In part, this may reflect a developmental expression of individuals' genetic propensities as they undergo physiological and hormonal changes and interact with new environments. Many commonly proposed mechanisms assume direct effects of an individual's own genes on emerging variation in their depressive symptomatology. However, estimates of genetic influence based on analyses in unrelated individuals capture not only direct genetic effects but also genetic effects from parents and other biologically related family members. Cognitive impairment is common in post-acute sequelae of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection (long COVID) and substantially affects function and quality of life. Evidence suggests that sustained neuroinflammation, cerebrovascular dysfunction and mitochondrial impairment contribute to cognitive symptoms. Microtesla Magnetic Therapy (MMT) is a transcranial, low-amplitude radiofrequency magnetic field intervention that has shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects in preclinical models, suggesting potential value in long COVID and other neurological disorders. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are increasingly used for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity, but concerns about their mental health effects have been raised. Early safety reports linked them to suicidal thoughts and worsening depression; however, evidence remained mixed and unclear. A systematic search was conducted across three databases for studies published between 2021 and May 2026. Out of 617 records identified, 11 studies were finally included after quality checks using appropriate appraisal tools based on study design. This review was not prospectively reg

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders affect 970 million people globally; yet, over 50% do not access timely evaluation due to structural barriers and professional shortages. Chatbots and AI-based conversational agents have emerged as promising tools for mental health screening and assessment.
OBJECTIVE: This study systematically evaluated the effectiveness, accuracy, reliability, and acceptability of chatbots and AI-based conversational agents for mental health screening and assessment in adults.
METHODS: Systematic search conducted in May 2025 across PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web

Sleep health in adolescence is a global public health concern. However, limited studies on adolescent sleep health in Africa exist, and the extent of the available literature on the African continent has not been previously mapped. This review aimed to map the studies on adolescent sleep health in Africa with a focus on the geographical distribution, publication trends, pattern of sleep health measures, prevalence of sleep disorders, the barriers and facilitators to good sleep health, rural-urban disparities, as well as the associations of sleep health with mental health, school schedule and c

IMPORTANCE: Gun, knife, or other weapon involvement in intimate partner violence (IPV) may indicate heightened actual and perceived lethality and coercive control, but its mental health impacts on survivors are poorly understood after accounting for other IPV and prior mental health symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the adjusted association between gun and other weapon-involved IPV and symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder (PD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD), accounting for concurrent and past nonweapon physical IPV, ps

INTRODUCTION: University students experience escalating academic, social and financial stress, resulting in high prevalence of anxiety (18%-40%), depression (12-35%) and burnout (20-30%). The COVID-19 pandemic intensified these issues, but most studies report symptom remission post-lockdown, highlighting the need for long-term prospective data on symptom trajectories and risk factors. The Survey on Anxiety, Depression, Internalising and Externalising symptoms (SADIE) study aims to (1) estimate the prevalence and incidence of anxiety, depression, burnout and suicidal ideation in Italian univers

IMPORTANCE: Although grief-focused cognitive behavior therapies are the most empirically supported treatment for prolonged grief disorder, many people find this treatment difficult. A viable alternative for treatment is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative efficacies of grief-focused cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy to reduce prolonged grief disorder severity.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A single-blind, parallel, randomized clinical trial was conducted among adults aged 18 to 70 years with prolonged grief disorder, a

Natural disasters threaten population mental health. Acceptance, denoting recognition and assent of the finality of a situation, is a coping strategy that has been recommended following major disasters. This study investigates this topic for which existing findings are mixed. A survey was administered among a population-representative Turkish national sample (N = 7585) recruited through the internet panel of TGM Research (September-October 2023). We examined how acceptance and its interaction with cognitive integration (i.e., finding sense in a stressful event and finding significance in life

IMPORTANCE: Stress and its psychiatric consequences-including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-are pertinent to women's cardiovascular health, but research on intersections with relevant sex-specific factors (eg, hormonal contraceptives) is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether stress-related psychiatric diagnoses moderate associations between hormonal contraceptive use and cardiovascular and thrombotic risk.

Obesity is a chronic, debilitating condition with complex biological, psychosocial, and behavioral underpinnings. While the cardiometabolic consequences are reasonably well-established, the often-forgotten bidirectional association between obesity and mental health disorders, including anxiety, eating disorders, depression, and even suicidal ideations, is rarely assessed as a primary endpoint in obesity intervention studies. Similarly, documents summarizing and comparing various types of obesity interventions and their effects of mental health in this rapidly evolving field are scarce. This na

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period is a critical risk period for changes in eating disorder (ED) symptoms. However, extant research is mixed regarding the direction of these changes, with some studies identifying relief from ED symptoms and others finding evidence of worsening symptoms during this time. To account for heterogeneity in ED symptom change among pregnant and postpartum individuals, the current study aimed to explore ED symptom trajectories and their psychosocial correlates during pregnancy and the first postpartum year using person-centered statistical approaches.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is associated with higher suicidality and reduced functioning. Diagnosis and treatment can improve symptoms and quality of life. Poor quality healthcare experiences for people seeking help for PMDD have been documented in other countries, but not in Australia.
OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively and qualitatively describe experiences of healthcare for PMDD in Australia, including variations in experience by healthcare provider (HCP) type.

OBJECTIVE: To explore associations between vasomotor symptoms (VMS), sleep disturbances, and frequent mood changes, and predictors of each, in women transitioning menopause.
METHODS: Data were analyzed from the baseline and first 10 annual follow-up visits (1996-2008) from 2,066 participants in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation who had reached natural menopause. The visit closest to the final menstrual period (FMP) was considered as FMP 0; visits 5 years before/after were relabeled accordingly. Associations between symptoms over time were determined using generalized additive mixe

IMPORTANCE: Grief-focused cognitive behavioral therapies (GF-CBTs) are found effective in treating prolonged grief disorder (PGD), but the relative efficacy of different delivery formats is unknown. While evidence for individual GF-CBT (GF-CBT individual) is well established, evidence for group GF-CBT (GF-CBT group) is scarce. However, the group format holds possible advantages in a bereavement context.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether GF-CBT group is noninferior to GF-CBT individual in reducing PGD symptoms in older adults.
