Relative Contributions of Gastrointestinal-Specific Hypervigilance and Anxiety in Explaining Eating Disorder Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal (GI) disturbances and eating disorder symptoms commonly co-occur. Hypervigilance and anxiety about GI symptoms may motivate eating disorder behaviors to manage and/or avoid GI symptoms. We hypothesized that GI-specific anxiety would be more strongly associated with dietary restriction and purging than GI-specific hypervigilance. Further, we hypothesized that distinguishing between GI-specific anxiety and hypervigilance would have incremental validity over using an existing measure of GI-anxiety and related constructs initially developed for patients with irritable b

Dynamic functional abnormalities of cerebellar networks in adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) commonly begins during adolescence, yet its neurobiological basis remains unclear. Beyond the classical cortico-striatal framework, the cerebellum has been implicated in cognitive, affective, and motor regulation, relevant to OCD. However, it is unknown whether adolescent OCD involves abnormal dynamic coordination of large-scale cerebellar networks. METHODS: Thirty-eight adolescents with OCD and 29 matched controls underwent dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) analysis of cerebellar networks using a sliding-window approach and k-means

Risk of schizophrenia in patients previously diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to synthesize longitudinal evidence on the risk of developing schizophrenia (SCZ) among individuals previously diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: A systematic search of longitudinal studies examining the temporal relationship between OCD and SCZ was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and Scopus in September 2023 and subsequently updated in January 2026. We included original longitudinal observational studies reporting the incidence of schizophrenia in patients with a prior OCD diagnosis compared to controls. Cross-sectiona

Radiosurgical capsulotomy for treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder through a network neuroscience lens.

Severe, treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) remains disabling despite optimized pharmacotherapy and exposure and response prevention (ERP). Radiosurgical capsulotomy is an irreversible ablative intervention reserved for highly selected patients. This narrative review examines evidence from structural MRI, diffusion imaging, functional connectivity, electrophysiology, and radiobiology. The search was supplemented by a reproducible PubMed search across eight prespecified modules (856 records before and 739 after deduplication), with an audited 102-record core SRS/OCD set. Str

Pleasure and compulsion in gaming: distinct roles of hedonic and compulsive game use in gaming involvement.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stage-related models of problematic gaming suggest that the relative prominence of reward-oriented and compulsivity-related processes may vary across levels of gaming involvement. However, few studies have jointly examined hedonic and compulsive game use across different levels of gaming involvement while accounting for relevant trait-level vulnerabilities. This study investigated their distinct associations with gaming involvement. METHODS: A total of 2259 gamers were included in the cross-sectional analyses, of whom 725 completed a one-year follow-up. Hedonic and compul

Associations of nonattachment with infant care-related obsessive-compulsive behaviours, depression, anxiety, and stress in postpartum women.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum women frequently experience depression, anxiety, stress, and infant care-related obsessive-compulsive behaviours, adversely affecting maternal psychological adjustment and well-being. Nonattachment is a potentially protective psychological construct associated with lower psychological distress and greater well-being, however; evidence on its relationship with postpartum psychological symptoms is limited. AIM: This study aimed to examine the associations between nonattachment and infant care-related obsessive-compulsive behaviours, depression, anxiety, and stress among p

Assessing the effect of subthalamic stimulation on metaperception in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Most human studies on perceptual decision-making are correlational, and few addressed the causal role of the neural markers they identify. Here, we took the opportunity offered by deep brain stimulation to study the causal role of subthalamo-cortical networks on perceptual decision-making and perceptual monitoring. We asked participants with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) treated with subthalamic stimulation to detect visual stimuli and provide confidence reports while we recorded scalp electroencephalography. Following a preregistered plan, we compared behavioural and neural results betw

From trauma exposure to depression or resilience: cognitive-emotional vulnerabilities and protective roles of rumination, emotion dysregulation, and self-compassion.

Exposure to traumatic experiences is a well-documented risk factor for the development of depressive disorders; however, considerable variability exists in psychological outcomes following trauma exposure, with many individuals demonstrating resilience despite significant adversity. Understanding the mechanisms underlying these divergent trajectories is essential for improving prevention and intervention strategies. This narrative review integrates current empirical evidence on rumination, emotion dysregulation, and self-compassion to propose a cognitive-emotional framework explaining how mala

Convergent validation of the need for Emotional Closure Scale in autobiographical memory: links to rumination, uncertainty, and involuntary thoughts in a Polish sample.

Emotional closure refers to the subjective sense that a personally significant past event has been resolved, allowing it to be integrated into autobiographical memory with reduced emotional disturbance. The Need for Emotional Closure Scale (NECS) was developed to assess individual differences in the motivation to achieve such resolution. Across two studies, we evaluated the psychometric properties and convergent validity of the NECS in a Polish sample. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a four-factor structure, and the scale demonstrated good internal consistency. Convergent validity was e

Healthcare professionals' awareness of climate change and its association with eco-anxiety and environmental sensitivity: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals play an essential role in addressing the health impacts of climate change. Understanding how their awareness of climate issues and eco-anxiety relate to environmental sensitivity is critical for strengthening their capacity to respond to climate-related risks. This study aimed to examine the relationship between healthcare workers' climate change awareness, levels of eco-anxiety, and their environmental sensitivity. METHODS: A cross-sectional, correlational design was employed. The study included 460 healthcare professionals aged 18 years or older working

Which cognitive emotion-regulation strategies are implicated in the association between sleep quality and negative affect?

Poor sleep is causally related to the experience of mental health difficulties, and improving sleep can also improve mental health, positioning sleep as an important transdiagnostic treatment target in mental healthcare. However, considerably less is known about the psychological processes through which sleep may influence mental health. Identifying these processes could refine theoretical understanding and reveal specific targets for interventions. This large preregistered cross-sectional study examined cognitive emotion regulation as a candidate mechanism. A total of 899 adults completed mea

Consensus on components of psychological treatment for depression to reduce symptoms and target relapse risk factors in young adults: A modified Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Depression is increasingly prevalent in young adults and relapse is common. This study aimed to obtain consensus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)-based treatment components considered important by experts for reducing symptoms and targeting relapse risk factors in young adults (18-25 years). METHODS: We conducted a modified-Delphi study of three survey rounds, two panels and a consensus meeting. Academics/clinicians (n = 46) and young adult experts-by-experience (n = 24) rated treatment components, therapist competencies, relapse risk factors and interventions, content of re

Distinct facets of other-oriented social cognition show differential associations with internalizing symptoms in young women with low subjective social status.

Social hierarchy exerts widespread influences on human health and cognition. Other-oriented social cognitive processes may be particularly relevant for individuals in low social status positions as they navigate their social environments, and some of these processes may also be associated with internalizing difficulties. Given gender differences in both internalizing difficulties and social cognition, it is important to examine these associations among young women of low social status. In this study, we assessed associations between multiple dimensions of other-oriented processing and internal

Psychological factors associated with anxiety and depression in adults with osteoporosis: A random forest analysis.

BACKGROUND: Global increases in life expectancy have been accompanied by a rising prevalence of osteoporosis, a chronic condition frequently associated with psychological distress, particularly anxiety and depression. Identifying psychological factors associated with these outcomes is important for supporting comprehensive psychiatric nursing assessment and care. However, most previous studies have relied on traditional analytic approaches that may be limited in capturing complex relationships among psychosocial variables. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 622 Saudi adults

Gastroesophageal reflux in children with cerebral palsy: Does symptom presence reflect disease severity?

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the presence of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms in children with cerebral palsy (CP) reflects pathological reflux severity as assessed by 24-h multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH monitoring (MII-pH). METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective review of MII-pH tracings in children with CP (Gross Motor Function Classification System IV-V), aged 1-15 years, evaluated before gastrostomy placement across 11 centers in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Spain. Patients were classified as symptomatic or asymptomatic based on caregiver reports. Reflux index (RI

Anxiety sensitivity as a transdiagnostic risk factor and mechanism of change in the treatment of youth anxiety disorders and OCD: Findings from the Unified Protocols for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children and Adolescents.

Anxiety sensitivity, or fear of anxiety-related symptoms, is a "core dysfunction" associated with the development and maintenance of youth anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Accordingly, anxiety sensitivity is a common target of transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions, like the Unified Protocols for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children and Adolescents (UP-C/A). However, no studies have empirically evaluated anxiety sensitivity as a mechanism of symptom change within UP-C/A treatment. This study examined anxiety sensitivit
