Association Between Childhood Trauma and Somatization in a Clinical Sample: The Mediating Roles of Rumination, Cognitive Reappraisal, and Expressive Suppression.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationships among childhood trauma, somatization, depressive rumination, cognitive reappraisal, and expressive suppression among a clinical sample through a mediation model approach. METHODS: Outpatients (n=125) with a diagnosis of depression and/or anxiety were included in our study. Childhood trauma, somatization, depressive rumination, cognitive reappraisal, and expressive suppression were assessed by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Symptom Checklist-90-Revision (SCL-90-R), Korean-Ruminative Response Scale (K-RRS), and Emotion Regulation Q

Interpersonal motivations in adolescent rumination.

In the decades since Nolen-Hoeksema's (1991) original work on response styles, research on rumination has flourished within psychological science. This literature often emphasizes the association of impaired problem-solving with rumination. Spikes in the prevalence of rumination coincide with the entry into adolescence, as youth become increasingly sensitive to social feedback and interpersonal relationships. This article introduces the idea that rumination represents a socially reinforced process in adolescent girls, who are particularly likely to engage in rumination and to find interpersona

Improvement in avoidance in major depressive disorder: A 10-month prospective study of depressive symptoms and personality traits.

AIM: Avoidance is a key maintaining factor in major depressive disorder (MDD); however, longitudinal evidence remains limited, and its association with personality traits is not fully understood. This study aimed to (1) examine the longitudinal associations among avoidance, depressive symptoms, and rumination and (2) explore the relationship between avoidance and personality traits in outpatients with MDD. METHODS: In this 10-month prospective study, 53 adult outpatients diagnosed with MDD were assessed while receiving routine outpatient psychiatric care. Avoidance, depressive symptoms, and r

Comparing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Ericksonian Hypnotherapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Obsessive - Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic condition that often responds well to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), though many patients fail to achieve full remission. Ericksonian Hypnotherapy (EH) has been proposed as a promising alternative. This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of CBT and EH against a waitlist control in 99 adults with OCD. Participants received 12 weekly online therapy sessions. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, mid-treatment, and post-treatment using the Padua Inventory-Revised, Yale - Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale - Self-Report (Y-BOCS-SR)

Relational Aggression in Russian Adolescents: Gender, Age, and Behavior and Emotional Correlates.

The ways of expressing aggression may differ by gender and change with advancing age becoming more indirect or covert. In contrast to other types of aggression, boys and girls may be similar in their use of relational aggression (RA), which may replace other types of aggression by adolescence. Despite this, the relationships between RA and other types of aggression by gender and age are underexplored. This study aimed to compare RA in adolescents from Northwestern Russia and to explore its associations with other types of aggression, related emotions and cognitions, and peer victimization, tak

Forgiveness of Self and Situations and Rumination as Mental Health Correlates in Dental School Students.

INTRODUCTION: It is widely acknowledged that dental training is stressful, with students being vulnerable to burnout, anxiety, and depression. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations between psychosocial risk factors (maladaptive perfectionism and rumination) and resilience factors (forgiveness of self, others, and situations, and compassion for self and others) with burnout, depression, and anxiety. METHOD: In 2023, an electronic questionnaire was distributed to all dental students at a US dental school. Validated self-report measures were used to assess three domains: (a) mental he

Quality of life in hospitalized COVID-19 patients: the role of psychosocial, inflammatory, and dopaminergic pathways.

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of COVID-19 survivors continues to suffer from persistent physical and psychological sequelae after hospital discharge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the roles of psychosocial, inflammatory, and dopaminergic pathways in the relationship between posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), rumination, and quality of life (QoL) in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, as well as the moderating role of time since discharge. A total of 207 participants were divided into two groups based on their discharge timing: those discharged

A New frontier in assessing functional and cognitive impediments in psychiatric disorders and avenues for mitigation and treatment: a special issue about rumination, cognitive performance, and depressive symptoms.

In this introduction to this special issue, we describe how rumination (habitual, negative, perseverative thought processes) plays a critical role in the experience of depression and anxiety, the cognitive decrements common to these disorders, and daily functioning. We argue that the traditional concept of depression as a functional disorder is limiting, given what is now known about brain processes underlying depression, in addition to the impact of psychological mechanisms like rumination on cognitive functioning. We go on to summarize the seven original empirical studies that compose this s

The maladjustment mechanisms in the relationship between ambiguous loss and depression among North Korean defector women.

North Korean defectors represent a minority group within South Korean society, yet their psychological difficulties have received limited attention compared to other adjustment issues. Many North Korean defectors experience loss and trauma stemming from family separation, often described as "physical ambiguous loss" (i.e., physical absence with psychological presence). This study investigates the impact of ambiguous loss on depression among North Korean defector women, focusing on maladaptive psychological mechanisms. A total of 100 North Korean defector women who experienced family separation

Who exhibits cognitive biases? Mapping heterogeneity in attention, interpretation, and rumination in depression.

Although depression is heterogeneous in symptoms, few studies have asked whether cognitive features central to its etiology show similar heterogeneity. We addressed this question in a treatment-seeking sample of adults with at least moderate depression (N = 232) by assessing three biases: (a) attentional dwell time on sad stimuli, (b) negative interpretation of ambiguous stimuli, and (c) brooding rumination. The k-means clustering revealed distinct subgroups for each cognitive feature when considered separately. Latent profile analysis combining the three indicators identified two clear profil

Association of Metabolic Disease Occurrence on Milk Fatty Acid Composition and Rumination Time in Early Lactation Dairy Cows and Evaluation of Their Potential as Diagnostic Indicators.

This study investigated the relationship between metabolic disease, milk fatty acid composition, and rumination time in early lactation dairy cows and evaluated their utility as diagnostic indicators. Twenty-two Holstein dairy cows were monitored for 8 weeks postpartum, with weekly milk and blood sampling and continuous rumination monitoring. Thirteen cows developed subclinical or clinical metabolic disease. Compared to the healthy group, the disease group showed significantly lower de novo fatty acids (p < 0.01) and higher preformed fatty acids (p < 0.05) as a percentage of total milk fatty a

Machine Learning and SHapley Additive exPlanation-Based Interpretation for Predicting Mastitis in Dairy Cows.

SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis has been applied in disease diagnosis and treatment effect evaluation. However, its application in the prediction and diagnosis of dairy cow diseases remains limited. We investigated whether the variance and autocorrelation of deviations in daily activity, rumination time, and milk electrical conductivity, along with daily milk yield, could be used to predict clinical mastitis in dairy cows using popular machine learning (ML) algorithms and identifying key predictive features using SHAP analysis. Quantile regression (QR) with second- or third-order

Effect of Dietary Supplementation with Rumen-Protected GABA (γ-Aminobutyric Acid) on Milk Productivity and Blood Profiles of Dairy Cattle Under Heat Stress Conditions.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of rumen-protected γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplementation on milk productivity of lactating Holstein cows. Eighteen Holstein dairy cows (mean parity, 2.2 ± 1.0 year; mean milk yield, 34.3 ± 5.5 kg) were selected in a commercial dairy farm for the experiment. The experiment was conducted from 17 July 2024 to 11 September 2024 (56 days). Generally, THI 72 is set as a threshold since the productivity of Holstein cows starts to decrease. Animals were exposed to heat stress conditions (THI ≥ 72) during the experimental period. The basal diet was f

"Prideful Apathy": A Phenomenological-Psychopathological Study of Emotion Engagement and Regulation Tasks.

Background/Objectives: Emotion dysregulation is central to many psychiatric disorders. Laboratory-based tasks designed to assess emotion processing and regulation often rely on standardized affective stimuli whose ecological validity remains unclear. We contextualize this study in our broader research program of neurophenomenological reflection of standard paradigms in experimental cognitive psychology. Methods: This study investigates the lived experience of 27 patients with affective disorders as they performed a cognitive-affective task combining working memory demands with exposure to nega

Effects of rumination and distraction on working memory performance in individuals with depressive tendencies and trait anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Rumination prolongs depressive mood and impairs executive functioning including working memory and attentional control, even in healthy individuals. Distraction can potentially counteract these effects; however, many experimental paradigms have relied on neutral, self-unrelated content and have failed to reflect the self-focused nature of everyday rumination or the possible benefits of emotionally meaningful distractions. This study investigated the effects of rumination and positive and neutral distractions based on personally relevant content on working memory performance in heal

The effect of perceived parental rejection on depression in high school students: the chain mediating role of rumination and alexithymia.

In recent years, the incidence of depression in adolescents has continued to rise, which has become a hot issue of global concern. Through a cross-sectional survey, this study aims to explore the relationship between perceived parental rejection and depression in high school students, and to test the chain mediating effect of rumination and alexithymia in the relationship between them. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 2,310 high school students using the Short-from Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran for Chinese Scale, the Ruminative Responses Scale, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and

Metacognitive ability is associated with reduced emotion suppression.

Emotion regulation and metacognition are two key self-regulatory capacities that contribute significantly to psychological functioning. Emotion regulation involves the strategies individuals use to influence their emotional experiences, whereas metacognition refers to the capacity to reflect on and monitor one's own mental processes. Both constructs have been the focus of extensive research and are associated with important cognitive and behavioral outcomes. Although theoretical models propose that self-monitoring is a fundamental component of emotion regulation, the empirical link between emo

Latent patterns of rumination and hopelessness on self-harm behaviors in adolescence.

OBJECTIVES: Self-harm behaviors among adolescents, including suicide attempts (SA) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), present critical public health challenges globally. While past-oriented rumination and future-oriented hopelessness are established core dimensions of maladaptive self-cognition, their distinct associations with different forms of self-harm remain poorly characterized. METHODS: Using latent profile analysis, we investigated the heterogeneous profiles of rumination and hopelessness in a sample of 951 adolescents (Mage: 16.58; male: 420). We further examined how these latent pr
