Patterns of Psychiatric Referrals in a Consultation-Liaison Setting at a Rural Tertiary Care Center in Central India.

INTRODUCTION: Consultation-liaison psychiatry (CLP) addresses psychiatric symptoms in patients referred from non-psychiatric departments. This study examined the socio-demographic, clinical, and referral profiles of such patients in a rural tertiary care medical institution in central India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients referred to the psychiatry department over a two-month period were included. Data on demographics, referral patterns, and diagnoses were collected using a structured proforma and analyzed descriptively with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Of the 200 patients in

"From helper to survivor and back: Do's and don'ts from professionals who endured mass Trauma".

In an era marked by recurring large-scale disasters, whether political, man-made, or natural, the mental health community is increasingly confronted with the challenge of dual identity: the caregiver as survivor. At the 2025 PreAct Conference, the panel titled "From Helper to Survivor and Back: Do's and Don'ts from Professionals Who Endured Mass Trauma" brought together three seasoned professionals who offered raw, personal accounts of surviving mass trauma while maintaining their roles as mental health clinicians. Together, their experiences formed a powerful narrative of vulnerability, resil

Peer-based intervention for acute stress reaction: adaptations by five militaries.

Military service members need to be able to operate under conditions of extreme stress to ensure the success of their team's mission; however, an acute stress reaction (ASR) can compromise team safety and effectiveness by rendering an individual unable to function. Building on an intervention originally developed by the Israel Defense Forces, several countries have developed, tested, and disseminated a peer-based intervention to help service members manage acute stress in others. This paper reviews how five countries (Canada, Germany, Norway, the UK and the USA) adjusted the protocol to fit th

Metaphorical language and psychopathological symptoms: a case study of trauma victims' metaphor use.

BACKGROUND: While clinical diagnosis of mental health issues focuses on factual details represented by literal language (e.g., the onset and process of the triggering event and duration of symptom), the relationship between metaphorical language and psychopathological experiences remains an intriguing question. Focusing on psychological trauma triggered by the 2019-2020 Hong Kong social unrest, this study explored the correlations between trauma victims' quantitative metaphor usage patterns and their experience of specific Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) symptoms. METHODS: Forty-six individuals w

Differences in psychiatric comorbidity patterns in patients diagnosed with chronic stress-induced exhaustion disorder and depression - A cohort study in the total population of Region Stockholm.

The high prevalence of stress-related disorders and depression underscores the urgent need to unravel their impact on individual well-being. This study aim to investigate common psychiatric and stress-related diagnoses, along with postviral fatigue, in individuals with prior stress-induced exhaustion disorder (SED) and prior depression compared to those without prior SED or depression, and to study whether the psychiatric comorbidity patterns differ. The study includes individuals in Region Stockholm who, in 2011, did not have a diagnosis of SED or depression. ICD-10 diagnosis of SED, depressi

Utilization of psychiatry services in the emergency department following a terror event in Israel.

In October 2023, Israel sustained a massive terror attack, with 1,300 people murdered, over 240 kidnapped, and millions exposed to the horrors. This study's aim is to examine the profile of patients arriving to the emergency department (ED) for psychiatric services during the month following the attack, compared to a similar period the year prior. In this cohort study, we compared patients arriving to the ED of a large general hospital in the center of Tel Aviv for psychiatric services during the month post-attack with the previous year using t-tests and chi-square exams. In 2023, 256 patients

Effects of a psychological first aid (PFA) based on the SIX Cs model on acute stress responses in a simulated emergency.

OBJECTIVE: The SIX Cs model, a neuropsychological framework for psychological first aid, addresses acute stress responses that may lead to functional failure and heighten the risk for posttraumatic stress disorder. Unlike emotional interventions, this model prioritizes Cognitive Communication to diminish emotional overwhelm and bolster cognitive functioning. It introduces a Challenge for active engagement, Control for cognitive management of situations, Commitment from the helper to reduce loneliness, and Continuity to ensure narrative coherence. This study evaluates the SIX Cs model's effecti

Electroacupuncture negatively regulates the Nesfatin-1/ERK/CREB pathway to alleviate HPA axis hyperactivity and anxiety-like behaviors caused by surgical trauma.

BACKGROUND: Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis constitutes a pivotal response by surgical trauma, manifesting as a critical aspect of the acute stress reaction. This hyperactivity resulted in adverse surgical outcomes and is often associated with increased postoperative anxiety. Increased evidence suggests that Nesfatin-1 plays a crucial role in stress responses and stress-related psychiatric disorders. Electroacupuncture (EA) is widely used to alleviate stress responses and anxiety, although its mechanism of action remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the me

Psychological Distress Trends and Effect of Media Exposure Among Community Residents After the Seoul Halloween Crowd Crush.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how exposure to and perception of community trauma creates a mental health burden. This study aimed to examine the psychological distress trends among community residents in acute stress reaction, acute stress disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder phases following the Seoul Halloween crowd crush. METHODS: A three-wave repeated cross-sectional survey was conducted with participants after the incident. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with post hoc Bonferroni test was adopted to examine temporal changes in psychological distress and psychological outcomes resulti

A novel intervention for acute stress reaction: exploring the feasibility of ReSTART among Norwegian soldiers.

Background: Soldiers in combat may experience acute stress reactions (ASRs) in response to trauma. This can disrupt function, increasing both immediate physical danger and the risk for post-trauma mental health sequelae. There are few reported strategies for managing ASRs; however, recent studies suggest a novel peer-based intervention as a promising approach. Objectives: This study assesses the feasibility of ReSTART training, a peer-based course designed to prepare soldiers to manage ASRs. ReSTART builds on programmes established by US and Israeli militaries. The current study evaluates the R

Prospective stability of memory for peritraumatic dissociation and anxiety: Replication and extension examining PTSD treatment modality and response.

OBJECTIVE: Retrospective memory for peritraumatic reactions occurring during or immediately after trauma exposure may decrease in intensity for some over treatment. This may be due to psychotherapy-specific memory processes, such as repeated accessing of the trauma memory. Additionally, it may be that recovery drives changes in memory for these experiences. Critical to examining these hypotheses is an effective control treatment that reduces symptoms but does not directly involve repeated retrieval of the trauma memory, such as pharmacotherapy. METHOD: In a sample of 200 individuals with post

Co-occurrence between mental disorders and physical diseases: a study of nationwide primary-care medical records.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders and physical-health conditions frequently co-occur, impacting treatment outcomes. While most prior research has focused on single pairs of mental disorders and physical-health conditions, this study explores broader associations between multiple mental disorders and physical-health conditions. METHODS: Using the Norwegian primary-care register, this population-based cohort study encompassed all 2 203 553 patients born in Norway from January 1945 through December 1984, who were full-time residents from January 2006 until December 2019 (14 years; 363 million person-

The effect of acute stress response on conspiracy theory beliefs.

The endorsement of conspiracy theories may be increased by subjectively perceived stress. Yet, it is not known whether this correlation is caused by the effects of the acute stress reaction on the brain or other psychological, social, or methodological factors. The effect of an experimentally induced acute stress reaction on conspiracy thinking was tested on a sample (n = 115) of students of medicine. Although the stress procedure caused a substantial increase in salivary cortisol, there was no significant effect on endorsing conspiracy theories or adopting conspiracy interpretations of novel

The personal and the national: Lessons learned in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks in Israel.

On October 7, 2023, terrorist organizations led by Hamas, launched an extensive attack on Israel. Within days following the initial attack, there was a clear need to provide psychological support to individuals who were exposed to the horrors of the October 7 attacks. Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center - Ichilov, a tertiary medical center, launched an emergency mental health service to provide psychological first aid to the first-line victims of the war. As the fighting spread, the services were extended to the entire population. The intervention we provided was guided by an integrated approach
