Witnessing Acute Stress Reaction in Team Members: The Moderating Effect of Peer-Based Training.

Individuals who witness team members exhibiting symptoms of an acute stress reaction (ASR) in the middle of a high-stress operational event may be negatively affected; ASR-related training may moderate this impact. In the present study, 560 Israeli soldiers were surveyed about ASR exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, public stigma, and whether they had received ASR-related training. This training, called YaHaLOM, is a Hebrew acronym that outlines steps for managing ASR in team members. Controlling for combat exposure, greater exposure to ASR symptoms was associated with mor

Post-traumatic stress disorder risk and witnessing team members in acute psychological stress during combat.

BACKGROUND: Occupational groups operating in dangerous environments may witness the development of acute stress reaction (ASR) in team members. Witnessing ASR in team members may increase the risk of developing subsequent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. AIMS: To describe ASR symptoms that individuals witness, assess the relationship between witnessing a team member exhibiting ASR symptoms and an individual's own PTSD symptoms, and describe common intervention responses by peers. METHOD: Cross-sectional, anonymous surveys were conducted with US soldiers who were previously dep

Is acute stress reaction a risk factor for early mortality?

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the role of combat stress reaction (CSR) in predicting all-cause mortality over a 33-year period following the end of the war. METHOD: Two groups of male veterans from the 1982 Lebanon War participated in this study in 1983 (T1) and 2016 (T2): the CSR group (n = 375) and a matched comparison group (n = 305) consisting of combatants who had participated in combat in the same units as the CSR group but were not identified as having CSR. Participants were assessed for posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and depressive symptoms in T1 and mortality in T2.

YaHaLOM training in the military: Assessing knowledge, confidence, and stigma.

Under conditions of profound stress, individuals in high-risk occupations may experience an acute stress reaction (ASR). Given that ASRs may interfere with functioning, placing the team in danger, the Israel Defense Forces developed YaHaLOM training to teach service members how to manage ASRs in team members. YaHaLOM is a novel, rapid, peer-based intervention specifically designed for use in the midst of a high-stress event. In all, 904 Israeli combat soldiers participated in the study; 76% reported having received YaHaLOM, and 24% reported that they had not. In addition to measures of knowled

Reepithelialization in focus: Non-invasive monitoring of epidermal wound healing in vitro.

Up to today, in vivo studies are the gold standard for testing of new therapeutics for cutaneous wound healing. Alternative in vitro studies are mostly limited to two-dimensional cell cultures and thus only poorly reflect the complex physiological wound situation. Here we present a new three-dimensional wound model based on a reconstructed human epidermis (RHE). We introduce impedance spectroscopy as a time-resolved test method to determine the efficacy of wound healing non-destructively by focusing on the barrier function of the RHE as a main feature of intact skin. We assessed the skin barri
