Outpatient psychotherapeutic treatment of gambling disorder - lessons learned from Bavaria.

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapeutic interventions are an effective treatment for gambling disorder (GD), yet little is known about their uptake in routine care settings. Using data from the Bavarian Association of Statutory Health Insurance (SHI) Physicians, this study estimates the proportion of patients with disordered gambling behavior receiving psychotherapy, describes their diagnostic characteristics, and outlines treatment patterns. METHODS: Adults insured by SHI in Bavaria with a confirmed GD diagnosis (ICD-10: F63.0 G) according to the M2Q criterion (i.e., diagnosis in ≥ 2 out of 4 quarters

Compounding Disasters and Australian Youth Mental Health: A Time of Significant (di)stress.

AIM: Climate change exposure is predicted to contribute to significant mental health problems for younger people; however, little research has examined this stressor in the context of other psychosocial stressors experienced by this age group. METHOD: In the immediate aftermath of Australia's severe bushfire season of 2019/2020 and at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, 712 Australian youth (Mage = 21.07, range 16-25 years) completed standardised clinical screening measures of psychological distress, adjustment disorder, and substance misuse. Objective exposure to extreme drought, bushfire, a

The impact of psychological trauma on weight loss, psychosocial functioning, and psychopathology in bariatric and metabolic surgery candidates: a systematic review.

Up to 22% of bariatric and metabolic surgery (BMS) candidates experience trauma or stressor-related symptoms and/or diagnoses (trauma-related distress), such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet research assessing their impact on surgical outcomes remains limited. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review examining how presurgical trauma-related distress affects postsurgical BMS outcomes. Five electronic databases and five grey literature sources were searched from inception to April 2025 for quantitative studies of adults undergoing BMS with current symptoms or diagnoses

Changing mental health from disaster to disaster: analysis of emergency psychiatric visits during pandemic and earthquake periods.

BACKGROUND: Social crises deeply affect mental health; however, the effects of different disaster types on emergency psychiatric admissions have not been adequately compared. The pandemic represents a chronic socially mediated stressor, whereas the earthquake constitutes an acute traumatic shock. This study compared emergency psychiatric consultations across three consecutive periods. METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective observational study. All eligible psychiatric consultations at Sütçü İmam University Faculty of Medicine Hospital during pre-pandemic (January 2019–January 2020), p

Assessment of Personality Profiles Among Patients Presenting With Deliberate Self-Harm at a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Deliberate self-harm (DSH) represents intentional self-inflicted physical injury encompassing both non-suicidal self-injurious acts and suicide attempts, constituting a significant psychiatric emergency with profound morbidity implications. Individuals with personality disorders demonstrate substantially elevated suicide attempt rates compared to those without personality pathology. Comprehensive psychosocial assessment remains fundamental for evaluating DSH presentations. While research has investigated socioeconomic determinants and personality disorders among adolescent populatio

Community severance and mental health-related hospital visits in New York City.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders are more prevalent in urban areas; urban living has been linked to increased risk of anxiety, mood, and schizophrenia disorders. These associations may be partially explained by the social and physical urban environment. While traffic-related exposures such as air pollution and noise have been linked to adverse mental health outcomes, the role of road infrastructure and traffic in severing communities and breaking down the social fabric-termed community severance-remains understudied. METHODS: We conducted ZIP code-level analyses (2011-2014) to investigate

Mental health after compounding natural hazard exposure in New South Wales from 2019 to 2023: a cross-sectional study in Australian youth.

Direct exposure to fires and floods adversely impacts mental health, although less is known about youth wellbeing after compounding natural hazards in short time frames. A youth sample aged 16-25 years completed self-report measures of adjustment disorder, alcohol/substance misuse and dependence, depression, anxiety and stress symptoms, and climate change anxiety after drought, bushfire and flood events in New South Wales. From 877 respondents, direct exposure to compounding (i.e., ≥ 2) natural hazards occurred in 182 persons and single hazard in 267. Compounding hazards increased odds for alc

Efficacy and mechanisms of internet-delivered mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for Adjustment Disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment Disorder (AjD) is a common stress-related condition, yet evidence-based interventions remain scarce. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) targets transdiagnostic mechanisms such as cognitive fusion and low self-compassion, which may be particularly relevant for AjD. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial tested the efficacy of a brief, guided, asynchronous internet-delivered MBCT (iMBCT) for AjD during the COVID-19 pandemic, compared with internet-delivered progressive muscle relaxation (iPMR) and a waitlist control (WLC). METHODS: Adults meeting ICD-11 crit

Depression Severity and Coping Styles as Independent Predictors of Functioning in Male Adults With Adjustment Disorder.

Adjustment disorder (AD) is characterized by disproportionate emotional and behavioural responses to stressors, often leading to significant functional impairment; however, the psychological mechanisms underlying this impairment remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study examined the effects of coping skills and metacognitive beliefs on psychosocial functioning in 83 young male patients (aged 19-30 years) diagnosed with AD according to DSM-5 criteria. Participants completed the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CSQ), Metacognitions Questionnaire (MCQ-30), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) a

Prevalence and predictors of adjustment disorder in patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.

BACKGROUND: Patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) face multiple challenges, including cardiac disease and shock discharges. Compared to anxiety, depression, and PTSD, adjustment disorder (AjD) remains under-researched. This study examined the prevalence and predictors of AjD in ICD patients using ICD-11 criteria. METHODS: A cross-sectional sample of 245 patients completed self-report questionnaires assessing AjD (ADNM-20), anxiety (GAD-7), social support (ESSI), alexithymia (TAS-20), and number of shocks. A chi-squared test analyzed group differences in AjD-cut off bas

Diagnostic visibility and context-dependent referral patterns in consultation-liaison psychiatry: A ten-year retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether psychiatric referral patterns in a general hospital without dedicated psychiatric beds are associated with symptom visibility rather than the underlying burden of psychiatric morbidity, and whether this pattern varies by clinical context. METHODS: A ten-year retrospective descriptive study (FY2016-2025) was conducted at Kakogawa Central City Hospital, a 600-bed public hospital serving as a Regional Dementia Medical Centre. Three inpatient psychiatric intervention routes were analysed: psychiatrist-led first assessments (n = 7991; diagnostic analyses restricted t

Determining the relative importance of risk and protective factors for adjustment disorder symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic by mixed-effects random forests.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed individuals to numerous psychosocial and health-related stressors associated with adjustment disorder (AjD) symptoms, yet it remains unclear which factors are most predictive. METHODS: Using mixed-effects regression random forests (MERF), a machine learning approach that combines random forests with mixed-effects regressions, we analyzed longitudinal data from 15,155 adults across 11 European countries collected at three time points between June 2020 and January 2022. We evaluated 245 candidate predictors, including sociodemographic, pandemic-related,

Treating Adjustment Disorders in Children and Adolescents: At the Intersection of Prevention and Psychopathology.

Adjustment disorders are amongst the most prevalent diagnoses in youth but there is currently limited empirically-supported guidance in treating this disorder. There are a couple approaches for determining effective treatments for youth with adjustment disorders based on theoretical models and empirical research. From the approach of clinical psychology and research on the treatment of psychological disorders, evidence-based interventions (EBIs) for related disorders can be matched to the particular symptoms of adjustment disorder that the youth experiences. From the approach of developmental

Mental health outcomes following emergent versus elective colorectal surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency surgery carries risk for psychological adverse events, yet procedure-specific mental-health outcomes remain poorly characterized. This study evaluated the association between surgical acuity (emergent vs elective), ostomy formation and new-onset postoperative mental-health conditions following colorectal surgery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing emergent or elective colorectal surgery from 2015 to 2025 in the TriNetX research-network was performed. Patients with pre-existing mental-health diagnoses were excluded. Analyses were stratified a p

Psychiatric Risk in Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) has been associated with psychiatric comorbidity, but previous studies have often been limited by cross-sectional designs, reverse causation and surveillance bias. We conducted a retrospective matched cohort study using the TriNetX US Collaborative Network to evaluate the risk of incident psychiatric disorders after CSU diagnosis. Adults with newly diagnosed CSU and no prior psychiatric diagnosis were propensity score matched 1 : 1 to non-CSU controls. Outcomes were depression, reaction to severe stress and adjustment disorders, schizophrenia and suicidal id

Postpartum adjustment among women with heart disease in pregnancy: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy with heart disease (PWHD) is a significant high-risk category, leading to adverse cardiovascular events and indirect maternal deaths. Despite advancements in perinatal care improving outcomes, the postpartum period remains high-risk for cardiovascular issues. Postpartum women face physical, psychological, and maternal role adjustments, with those having heart disease at higher risk for adjustment disorders. This study investigates the real experiences of postpartum adjustment in these patients. METHODS: Researchers conducted a qualitative study using reflexive thematic a
