Development of Theranostic Nanoprobes Based on Gd-Doped CdSe QDs Radiolabeled with 177Lu.

BACKGROUND: Microalgae are uniquely advantageous organisms cultured and harvested for several value-added biochemicals. A majority of these compounds are lipid-based, such as triacylglycerols (TAGs), which can be used for biofuel production, and their accumulation is most affected under nutrient stress conditions. As such, the balance between cellular homeostasis and lipid metabolism becomes more intricate to achieve efficiency in bioproduct synthesis. Lipidomics studies in microalgae are of great importance as biochemical diversity also plays a major role in lipid regulation among oleaginous

Deeper into dissociative Amnesia: A perspective from Higher-Order theories of consciousness.

Memory is a fundamental brain function relying on complex neurological mechanisms that involve the processes of experiencing, encoding, consolidating and retrieving. A disorder primarily characterized by the loss of (autobiographical) memory owing to stressful or traumatic events is dissociative amnesia, the underlying mechanisms of which are poorly understood and further research is warranted. In this review, we first outline the memory systems and associated brain areas, then introduce the neural suppression pathways of memory retrieval and discuss the neural correlates and influential theor

Rebuttal to "Questioning the recovery of dissociated traumatic memories under psilocybin".

In our original case report we provide detailed accounts of two research participants who reported the emergence of spontaneously recovered, previously forgotten traumatic memories of sexual assaults during psilocybin treatment. In their commentary of this article, Kangaslampi et al. argue that we preemptively label the experiences as dissociated traumatic memories in the absence of corroborating evidence and consideration of alternative explanations. Here we further address potential therapeutic effects associated with the classification of experiences and provide a rebuttal to the authors' c

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Functional Amnesia: When Concussion Becomes a Gateway to Functional Cognitive Disorder.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is typically associated with transient cognitive disturbance, particularly involving attention and new learning, with most patients demonstrating full recovery within weeks. Memory impairment in uncomplicated mTBI generally reflects reversible neurometabolic dysfunction and is limited to a brief period of post-traumatic amnesia and restricted retrograde loss surrounding the injury. However, a subset of patients develop persistent and disproportionate autobiographical memory disturbance that exceeds expected neuroanatomical limits and lacks structural correlat

Differentiating Suicide Attempt History Among Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder Engaging in Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal behaviors and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are highly prevalent and often co-occur among individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Individuals with both a BPD diagnosis and NSSI are at heightened risk for suicide. However, few studies have examined which factors differentiate those with BPD and NSSI who have attempted suicide from those who have not. This study aimed to identify such clinical factors to inform suicide risk assessment within this vulnerable population. METHODS: Participants were 78 individuals with BPD and a history of NSSI. Fifty-four had

Dissociative amnesia with fugue following a suicide attempt: a rare clinical intersection of identity loss and suicidal ambivalence: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative amnesia with dissociative fugue is a rare dissociative disorder characterized by abrupt loss of autobiographical memory and disruption of personal identity, most often emerging in the context of severe psychological stress. Although dissociative phenomena are increasingly recognized in individuals with suicidal behavior, the development of fugue states in the immediate aftermath of a suicide attempt remains rarely documented and poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 50-year-old man with no documented psychi

[Functional cognitive disorders and dissociative amnesia: the contribution of double listening].

Cognitive neurofunctional disorders (NFDs) and dissociative amnesia (DA) are distinct clinical entities, although they may share common pathophysiological mechanisms, vulnerabilities, and risk factors. When carefully assessed, cognitive neurofunctional disorders appear to be relatively common in memory clinics, accounting for up to 20% of consultations. The widespread adoption of the term "functional" over the past decade reflects the non-organic nature of these disorders and is generally well understood by patients. This terminology has progressively replaced earlier terms such as "psychogeni

Client-reported prevalence of repressed memory recovery in therapy: a representative U.K. sample.

The prevalence of recovered memories of previously unknown abuse is important because of the risk of memory construction. Asking therapists about such prevalence comes with inherent biases, a problem bypassed by asking a representative sample of therapy clients directly. This study examined client-reported prevalence in a representative U.K. sample of 1507 adults. Of the total sample, 40% reported receiving therapy. Among these, 4.9% reported that a therapist discussed repressed memories of abuse (12% of those who received therapy), with half indicating that the therapist raised it first (2.5%

Exploring Psychopathology with Brain Fingerprinting Technique.

In the exploration of psychopathology, the most discussed anecdote which always remained contradictory was the notion of 'functional vs biological' perspective of psychopathology. With the same anecdote, the present study attempted to reflect the clarity on the issue by taking a paradigmatic move in exploring the psychopathology with the help of Brain Fingerprinting Technique (BFT). BFT computes a mathematical and statistical algorithm for determination of information through presentation of stimuli. This presentation of stimuli leads to generation of P300-MERMER brainwave to determine the inf

Functional neurological disorder in pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period: systematic review.

AIMS AND METHOD: Functional neurological disorder (FND) most often presents in women of childbearing age, but little is known about its course and outcomes during pregnancy, labour and postpartum (the perinatal period). We searched MEDLINE, PsycInfo and Embase combining search terms for FND and the perinatal period. We extracted data on patient demographics, subtype of FND, timing of symptom onset, comorbidities, medications, type of delivery, investigations, treatment, pregnancy outcomes and FND symptoms at follow-up. RESULTS: We included 36 studies (34 case reports and 2 case series) descri

Prefrontally mediated inhibition of memory systems in dissociative amnesia.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms underlying generalized forms of dissociative ('psychogenic') amnesia are poorly understood. One theory suggests that memory retrieval is inhibited via prefrontal control. Findings from cognitive neuroscience offer a candidate mechanism for this proposed retrieval inhibition. By applying predictions based on these experimental findings, we examined the putative role of retrieval suppression in dissociative amnesia. METHODS: We analyzed fMRI data from two previously reported cases of dissociative amnesia. Patients had been shown reminders from forgotten and remembered

Same concept, different label: the effect of repressed memory and dissociative amnesia terminology on beliefs and recovered memory admissibility in court.

Controversy still surrounds recovered memories, centred around replacing the term repressed memory with dissociative amnesia. This study investigated whether exposure to these terminologies impacted legal opinions. In total, 886 participants were recruited across four experiments (1a/2a, followed by 1b/2b). In experiments 1a/1b, participants were randomly allocated to one of three conditions: Repressed Memory, Dissociative Amnesia, and Control. They tested whether reading a paragraph/watching a video about one of these terms would impact their opinions on the admissibility of recovered memorie

Assessing the feasibility of using salivary microRNAs as biomarkers to distinguish between chronic stress and childhood trauma in African American young women in an exploratory pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: The current study assessed the impact of self-reported stress measures on microRNA (miRNA) profiles in saliva exosomes. Saliva is one of the most accessible and non-invasive bodily fluids and exosomal miRNAs in saliva could be useful in (1) measuring stress states and (2) distinguishing between individuals suffering from high levels of chronic stress vs. adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). miRNAs are small, noncoding RNAs that act as gene regulators. Several studies have shown differential expressions of certain miRNA in neurological diseases and in stress, post-traumatic stres

In a UK sample, EMDR and other trauma therapists indicate beliefs in unconscious repression and dissociative amnesia.

This study explored UK mental health professionals' beliefs (N = 178) for autobiographical memory function for trauma in the context of adverse therapeutic outcomes, e.g., false memories. It captures novel data on controversial memory beliefs for unconscious repression, dissociative amnesia and dissociative identity disorder (DID). Study participants were mental health professionals and included non-trauma-focused, (n = 92), trauma-focused EMDR practitioners (n = 62) and (non-EMDR) trauma-focused practitioners (n = 24). Most study participants indicated some degree of belief in repression (>78

Therapeutic emergence of dissociated traumatic memories during psilocybin treatment for anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Psychedelic treatment is a rapidly emerging therapeutic approach for a host of chronic, difficult to treat psychiatric disorders, including anorexia nervosa (AN). Trauma and its sequelae, such as dissociation, often contribute to comorbidity and treatment refractoriness. AIMS: In this report, we describe the therapeutic emergence of previously dissociated traumatic memories of sexual assault in 2 of 10 research participants with AN while receiving psilocybin treatment. METHODS: Ten female adults who met DSM-5 criteria for AN or pAN (partial remission) participated in an open pilo

The pattern of dissociative symptoms differs between post-traumatic stress disorder and first esketamine administration for treatment-resistant depression.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative symptoms are commonly observed in a substantial minority of patients with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and during the first administration of esketamine for the treatment of Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). We examine differences in the number and pattern of dissociative symptoms (depersonalization, derealization, dissociative amnesia, identity fragmentation) reported by these two groups. METHODS: Data for patients diagnosed with PTSD (N = 134) were drawn from studies of individuals with exposure to civilian traumas, childhood abuse or combat trauma. Dat

Treatment-refractory Psychosis With Catatonia and Persistent Generalized Retrograde Amnesia: A Case Report of a 41-year-old, Mandarin-speaking Male.

In this report, we describe an unknown patient who presented to the emergency department with severe catatonia and a constellation of symptoms indicative of a primary psychotic disorder. Simultaneously, the patient exhibited severe autobiographical memory impairment suggestive of a comorbid dissociative disorder. Our report offers insight into a rare instance in which catatonia, a primary psychotic disorder, and dissociative disorder may have intersected in a clinical case. While the patient was successfully treated with lorazepam for his catatonia, his psychotic symptoms responded only minima

Recent evidence-based developments in the treatment of DID.

The research field focusing on the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of people with dissociative identity disorder (DID) is still relatively young and limited in scope. Until a few years ago, psychotherapeutic treatment for adults with DID consisted primarily of practice-based, phase-based psychodynamic psychotherapy based, whose treatment effects on dissociative symptoms are small. In recent years, fundamental research on dissociative amnesia and identity functioning has forwarded new insights important for the conceptualization of DID. In light of these emerging insights, empirically support

Alexithymia and problematic sexual behaviour: the mediation of dissociative patterns.

BACKGROUND: Sex addiction is a behavioural addiction that has received increasing scientific attention in recent years. Indeed, problematic sexual behaviours represent a growing clinical concern, often associated with significant emotional distress and interpersonal difficulties. In light of this, the present study aimed to investigate its psychological antecedents by exploring the role of alexithymia and dissociation, and by examining the effect of gender as a covariate. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE: A sample of 326 participants completed validated self-report measures assessing alexithymia, d

Questioning the recovery of dissociated traumatic memories under psilocybin: comment on "Therapeutic emergence of dissociated traumatic memories during psilocybin treatment for anorexia nervosa".

In their recent case report article, Peck and colleagues suggested that two patients recovered dissociated traumatic memories during psilocybin treatment for anorexia nervosa. These case reports are of clinical and scientific interest and confirm that psychedelics may induce vivid memory-like experiences. However, the reports warrant scrutiny. Here, based on what is known about recovered memories and the effects of psychedelics, we argue that the authors may not have adequately considered alternative explanations. The cases do not necessarily demonstrate that psilocybin induces recovery of dis
