Dissociation in undergraduate students: disruptions in executive functioning.

The concept of dissociation refers to disruptions in attentional control. Attentional control is an executive function. Few studies have addressed the link between dissociation and executive functioning. Our study investigated this relationship in a sample of undergraduate students (N = 185) who completed the Dissociative Experiences Scale and the Random Number Generation Task. We found that minor disruptions in executive functioning were related to a subclass of dissociative experiences, notably dissociative amnesia and the Dissociative Experiences Scale Taxon. However, the two other subscale

Dissociative disorder in children. A case study.

Dissociative disorder is well-known in adulthood but in many cases it begins in childhood where it is usually not taken into consideration, rarely diagnosed, and often mistaken with borderline disorders. In childhood dissociation is well-defined: in a dimensional way by the presence of the dissociation symptoms over 2 SD and in a categorial view by the presence of primary symptoms. We made a psychiatric assessment on a child aged 11 years and 7 months, who said he heard "voices in his head". The assessment included: Children Dissociative Checklist (CDC), Adolescent Dissociative Experience Scal

The paradox of "detachment disorders": binding-disruptions of dissociative process.

This case is discussed in the contexts of affect theory, attachment theory, and dissociative experience. Dissociative adaptations to living that become entrenched resistances during psychotherapeutic inquiry give way to a scrupulous attention to the characteristics of dissociative experiencing. Somatosensory free association and appreciation of experiential aspects of depersonalization, derealization, and dissociative amnesia open new areas of negotiation between patient and therapist. Paradigms from infant attachment and adult attachment research parsimoniously explicate psychodynamic formula

Dissociative symptoms in schizophrenia: a comparative analysis of patients with borderline personality disorder and healthy controls.

The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of dissociative symptoms in patients with a schizophrenic disorder. The pattern of dissociative experiences was examined in a group of patients with a diagnosis of the schizophrenia spectrum disorder (n = 26; mean age 27.9 years), and a group of patients with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (n = 26; mean age 24.0 years) was compared with normal controls of the general population (n = 1,056; mean age 18.7 years). The degree of self-reported dissociative symptoms was measured using the German version of the Dissociative Exper

Depersonalisation disorder: clinical features of 204 cases.

BACKGROUND: Depersonalisation disorder is a poorly understood and underresearched syndrome. AIMS: To carry out a large and comprehensive clinical and psychopathological survey of a series of patients who made contact with a research clinic. METHOD: A total of 204 consecutive eligible referrals were included: 124 had a full psychiatric examination using items of the Present State Examination to define depersonalisation/derealisation and 80 had either a telephone interview (n=22) or filled out a number of self-report questionnaires. Cases assessed were diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria.

Dissociative disorders in Turkish inpatients with conversion disorder.

The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of dissociative disorders (DDs) among inpatients with conversion disorder (CD) in a university clinic settled in Eastern Turkey. During a period of 24 months, 59 consecutively admitted adult CD patients were screened with the Dissociative Experience Scale (DES). Patients who scored above 30 (DDs group) did not differ by age or gender from a group of inpatients who scored below 10 on the scale (comparison group). All patients in the two groups were then interviewed in a blind manner using the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS) an

An unusual presentation of inhalant abuse with dissociative amnesia.

A 38-y-old male with occult inhalant abuse underwent an 18-mo evaluation for presumed seizure disorder. Although past medical history was significant for alcohol abuse, his wife confirmed a 6-y histoy of abstinence. His seizures were characterized as episodes of unconsciousness preceded by a feeling of "things slowing down". No muscular activity was witnessed during these episodes, and upon regaining consciousness the patient had slurred speech, disorientation, dissociative amnesia, and bizarre behavior that resolved spontaneously. Despite 4 emergency department visits, 4 hospital admissions,

An acute psychiatric episode following transvaginal oocyte retrieval.

Psychological disorders of infertile patients are traditionally thought to be chronic, to advance gradually, and to be long-term problems. We describe a patient in whom an acute psychiatric episode developed immediately after transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval. A 34 year old women without history of psychiatric disturbance or adverse reaction to drugs suffered an acute psychiatric episode immediately after oocyte retrieval. She exhibited tachycardia, tachypnoea, transient hypertension and limb rigidity, as well as alterations to stupor and posture. Her vital signs stabilized and s

Dissociative amnesia after general anesthesia--a case report.

Psychogenic unconsciousness is a rare cause of failure of prompt recovery from general anesthesia. The diagnosis is only made by exclusion of other conditions. We describe a young, healthy female who failed to wake up promptly after total intravenous anesthesia with alfentanil and propofol. She regained consciousness 24 hours later without any specific treatment. However she sustained amnesia for a period of 48 hours. Dissociative disorder was diagnosed after an extensive workup. This case report emphasizes the importance of inclusion of psychiatric disorder in the differential diagnosis shoul

Amnesia for autobiographical memory: a case series.

Functional amnesia for autobiographical memory is a rare but pathognomic sign of dissociative disorders. Amnesia for part of one's personal history is sometimes also seen in other functional disorders like depression and schizophrenia but autobiographical amnesia in these disorders is relatively rar . Phenomenologically the autobiographical memory loss, amnesia for events during the amnestic episode and change of identity (as in fugae and dissociative identity disorder) are all expressions of altered memory organisation. This paper reports three cases of autobiographical amnesia with clinical

Memory for murder. A psychological perspective on dissociative amnesia in legal contexts.

There is currently a complex and inconsistent state in the law relating to dissociation and dissociative amnesia (McSherry, 1998). Although dissociative amnesia in defendants is relevant to both competency to stand trial and criminal responsibility in principle, courts have typically assumed a skeptical stance toward such claims in practice. However, there is considerable evidence from both nonoffender and offender populations to support the validity of dissociative amnesia in defendants. Further, there is information available to aid in the evaluation of amnesia, such as the quality of the re

Canadian and American psychiatrists' attitudes toward dissociative disorders diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the opinions of Canadian psychiatrists regarding dissociative disorder diagnoses with those of previously surveyed American psychiatrists. METHOD: We sent a 1-page questionnaire to a stratified representative sample of 550 Canadian psychiatrists. RESULTS: Eighty percent of Canadian psychiatrists responded. Fewer than one-third replied that dissociative amnesia and dissociative identity disorder should be included without reservations in the DSM-IV; fewer than 1 in 7 felt that the validity of these diagnoses was supported by strong scientific evidence. Generalized dissociative amnesia: episodic, semantic and procedural memories lost and found.

OBJECTIVE: This review tests Ribot's classic twofold categorization of generalized amnesia (GA) into Type I, total loss of episodic memory, and Type II, additional more or less extensive loss of semantic and/or procedural memory. It also explores his law of regression, according to which, cast in modern terms, recovery of lost procedural and semantic memories precedes recovery of episodic memory, as well as reported aetiological factors. METHOD: Clinically and formally assessed cases of GA, published since 1845, were surveyed and further analysed. RESULTS: Over and above authentic episodic m

[Study of dissociative disorders and depersonalization in a sample of young adult French population].

UNLABELLED: Questioned by several researches about dissociative disorders, the authors study differences established on the nosographic register, through a quantitative study and a psychodynamic argumentation in a sample of french population. From the utilisation of the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) created by Bernstein E and Putnam FW (1986), which is an excellent screening tool for dissociative disorders and constructed on DSM II diagnostic criterions, the authors will show the interest of a psychodynamic analysis of dissociative disorders, in the face of the diagnostic difficulty in

Psychiatric disorders among tortured Bhutanese refugees in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: The impact of torture on the distribution of psychiatric disorders among refugees is unknown. METHODS: We surveyed a population-based sample of 418 tortured and 392 nontortured Bhutanese refugees living in camps in Nepal. Trained interviewers assessed International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) disorders through structured diagnostic psychiatric interviews. RESULTS: Except for male sex, history of torture was not associated with demographics. Tortured refugees, compared with nontortured refugees, were more likely to report 12-month ICD-10 posttraumatic stress

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) in Japan: A forensic case report and the recent increase in reports of DID.

The subject of this report murdered four young girls between 1988 and 1989. The forensic psychiatric evaluation showed that soon after the sudden death of his dearest grandfather he had developed dissociative symptoms including depersonalization, autoscopy, fugue, dissociative amnesia, Ganser's syndrome and DID, on the basis of earlier traumatic experiences under the dysfunctional family circumstances of his early childhood. His DID was thought to be manifest in at least four personalities, i.e., a host personality, a child personality, a cool personality and a female personality. In Japan onl

Attitudes toward DSM-IV dissociative disorders diagnoses among board-certified American psychiatrists.

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed the opinions of American psychiatrists regarding the diagnostic status and scientific validity of the DSM-IV categories of dissociative amnesia and dissociative identity disorder. METHOD: A one-page questionnaire was mailed to a random national sample of 367 board-certified American psychiatrists. RESULTS: Three hundred one responses were received-a rate of 82%. Only about one-third of respondents replied that dissociative amnesia and dissociative identity disorder should be included without reservations in DSM-IV; a larger proportion replied that these catego

Dissociative detachment and memory impairment: reversible amnesia or encoding failure?

The authors propose that clinicians endeavor to differentiate between reversible and irreversible memory failures in patients with dissociative symptoms who report "memory gaps" and "lost time." The classic dissociative disorders, such as dissociative amnesia and dissociative identity disorder, entail reversible memory failures associated with encoding experience in altered states. The authors propose another realm of memory failures associated with severe dissociative detachment that may preclude the level of encoding of ongoing experience needed to support durable autobiographical memories.
