Acute amnestic syndromes are usually rare clinical events occurring in emergency situations. Etiological diagnosis can be challenging and underlying causes diverse. They can be transient and totally reversible, or accompanied by other neurological symptoms resulting in serious and irreversible brain damage. This is a case report of a 24-year-old woman, who was well-known in psychiatric departments with a personality disorder and anxiety, and who was admitted to a psychiatric department due to acute global amnesia. She answered all questions with: "I don't know" or "I don't remember". She did not have any other symptoms, no head injury, drug abuse nor signs of somatic disease. Four days after the symptoms initially occurred, they showed full remission without any other particular intervention than hospitalisation. She was diagnosed with dissociative amnesia.

Psychologists have debated the wisdom of recovering traumatic memories in therapy that were previously unknown to the client, with some concerns over accuracy and memory distortions. The current study surveyed a sample of 576 undergraduates in the south of the United States. This report describes a unique, dose dependent side effect of a commonly used drug, topiramate. Although cognitive side effects of this drug have previously been reported in literature, we present a case of drug-induced amnesia, with support from Naranjo Nomogram, as a hitherto unreported side effect of topiramate. Here, we highlight the importance of being cognizant of such rare cognitive side effects, with the aim of improving patient outcome by timely recognition, and discontinuation of the offending drug, as the side effect was fortunately found to be reversible.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is common among asylum-seekers and manifests with symptoms uniquely problematic to the United States asylum-seeking process. Chiefly, hyper-vigilance, avoidance behavior, dissociative amnesia and a tendency towards non-linear narratives hinder the articulation of an effective asylum claim. A 40-year-old man presented with generalised dissociative amnesia. Patients with dissociative retrograde amnesia, under the influence of high stress, lose access to past autobiographical event memories that should have been remembered. Patients with dissociative anterograde amnesia cannot recall extremely emotional experiences. If dissociative anterograde amnesia is experienced repeatedly in daily life, something in daily life becomes a fear stimulus. Fear conditioning in dissociative anterograde amnesia is often related to past memories of child abuse that can not be recalled due to dissociative amnesia.
