Complex dissociation following maternal suicide attempt in a 17-year-old female: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative disorders involve disruptions in memory, identity, sensory awareness, and motor control, often triggered by psychological distress. Dissociative amnesia may appear as either retrograde or anterograde memory loss, and dissociative stupor as well as conversion disorder are also considered part of the dissociative disorders spectrum. Cases presenting with generalized amnesia (both retrograde and anterograde), dissociative stupor, and conversion disorder are rare. Here, I report a unique case of a 17-year-old female exhibiting this combination of symptoms following her mot

A study of stressors, family environment, coping patterns, and family burden in persons with dissociative disorder.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative disorder is a stress-related disorder usually present in adolescents and younger age groups. It is also accompanied by significant impairment in activity of daily living and family relations. Family environment and use of dysfunctional coping strategies play important roles in the initiation and maintenance of symptoms and this puts a considerable burden on the family. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to study the presence of stressors, the role of family environment, the role of family burden, and the use of coping mechanisms in persons with dissociative disorder. Case Report: GABAergic and Serotoninergic Agents for the Treatment and Prevention of Prolonged Dissociative Stupor.

Dissociative stupor is a common psychiatric disease lacking an established standard treatment. The lack of therapeutic options may be due to the spontaneous and quick complete remission of most patients. However, since some patients experience multiple relapses and prolonged stupor, investigating potential prevention and treatment options is critical. We reported the case of a 61-year-old Japanese woman who presented with intermittent dissociative stupor for several months. Despite her prolonged symptoms, the administration of lorazepam, escitalopram, and aripiprazole, which selectively enhanc

Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis: Psychiatric Presentation of a Rare Diagnosis.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that is characterized by widespread demyelination, predominantly involving the white matter of the brain and spinal cord. Often caused by a viral infection or vaccination, its clinical features include an acute encephalopathy with multifocal neurologic signs and deficits in children. It can present with psychosis, depression, or abnormal behavior, and it might mimic a dissociative disorder. This report involves a similar rare case of a 14-year-old female patient who presented with fl

Recurrent Episodes of Dissociative Fugue.

Dissociative fugue is rare entity to encounter with possible differentials of epilepsy and malingering. It is one of the dissociative disorders rarely seen in clinical practice more often because of the short lasting nature of this condition. This might also be because of organized travel of the individuals during the episodes and return to their families after the recovery from episodes. This is a case description of a patient who has experienced total three episodes of dissociative fugue. The patient has presented during the third episode and two prior episodes were diagnosed as fugue episod

Dissociative stupor mimicking consciousness disorder in an advanced lung cancer patient.

Although there are three kinds of stupor in psychiatry, dissociative stupor is the most commonly recognized. In psychiatric clinics or emergency rooms, dissociative stupor is common, but in an oncology setting it is hardly known. Therefore, distinguishing dissociative stupor from consciousness disorder is occasionally difficult, especially in the advanced or terminal phase. We report an advanced lung cancer patient who presented dissociative stupor mimicking consciousness disorder. It is necessary to distinguish between consciousness disorder and dissociative stupor. In addition, consultation

[A case of dissociative stupor with decorticated posture after neck clipping of brain aneurysm].

We experienced a case of dissociative stupor with decorticated posture in a 71-year-old woman after neck clipping of the brain aneurysm. Decorticated posture is observed with severe midbrain disorder caused by brain herniation. In this case, therefore, severe brain stem damage was suspected, although light reflex was observed and respiration was stable. In addition, in this case, the aneurysm was located at the junction of the internal carotid artery and the posterior communicating artery. Therefore, surgical damage to midbrain was not likely to have happened. Postoperative computed tomography

[Dissociative stupor as a postoperative consequence of general anesthesia].

A 31-year-old woman failed to awaken after an uneventful general anesthesia (propofol, alfentanil and 65% N2O in oxygen) for laparoscopic resection of an ovarian cyst. After the operation she was extubated and vital signs were stable. However, the patient remained unresponsive even to painful stimuli for about 2 h. Just before we performed a computed tomogram of the brain to exclude a cerebral lesion we noticed that she blinked. We hypothesized that unconsciousness was due to a dissociative stupor. After administration of sublingual lorazepam the patient woke up promptly and was alert and norm

[Dissociative stupor--differential diagnosis of coma following injury].

Two cases are described in which a dissociative stupor originating from conversion neurosis simulated a coma following a sustained trauma. At first both patients showed no response to being addressed or to pain stimuli. They presented an upward eye gaze deviation, cardiorespiratory functions were stable. Following extensive diagnostic procedures revealing no organic cause for the clinical symptoms, the diagnosis of a hysterical consciousness disorder was stated. Symptoms of conversion neuroses include lacking call response, gait disorder, seizure-like conditions and strength diminution in one

Limited utility of ICD-10 and DSM-IV classification of dissociative and conversion disorders in India.

Studies of psychiatric out-patients from India have found that diagnosis of some of the subcategories of the dissociative and conversion disorders of the ICD and DSM classificatory systems are rarely made in this setting. Moreover, it was found that a significant percentage of patients seen in psychiatric practice may not fit into the defined subcategories of dissociative (conversion) disorders of these systems of classification. We studied the prevalence of various ICD-10 and DSM-IV categories of dissociative (conversion) disorders and our own proposed category of 'brief dissociative stupor'
