Perfusion imaging of meningioma by using continuous arterial spin-labeling: comparison with dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast-enhanced MR images and histopathologic features.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic dynamic exercise leads to regulative and structural adaptations of the heart (athlete's heart). To what extent the enlargement and physiologic hypertrophy of the heart lead to changes in the function of the valves, particularly regurgitation, is not yet clear. The aim of this study was to examine the regurgitation levels of different states of "athlete's heart." METHODS: Our study population consisted of 5124 healthy subjects (4046 male and 1078 female, 18-60 years), regularly exercising 1 to 20 h/wk. Subjects were divided into 3 groups depending on their relative heart vol

Psychiatric problems of heart transplant candidates with left ventricular assist devices.

Most heart transplant candidates are equipped with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). LVAD therapy is associated with characteristic psychiatric and psychosocial problems. To investigate the mental states of heart transplant candidates, psychiatric diagnosis, psychological or behavioral problems, and the need for treatment were evaluated around the time of registration to the waiting list and during follow-up. Saitama Medical University Hospital has been designated a hospital for heart transplantation since October 2002. The subjects were 14 heart transplant candidates (9 male candidates

Seven institutionalized children and their adaptation in late adulthood: the children of Duplessis (Les Enfants de Duplessis).

War, societal and familial upheaval, disease, and natural disasters have resulted in orphaned children throughout time. One societal response to providing care for orphans has been institutionalization or the orphanage. We studied a sample of adults, known as les enfants de Duplessis or Duplessis's children, who were raised in Quebec institutions from birth onward and followed up in late adulthood. Systematic study indicated a high prevalence of adverse outcomes and found high levels of gross psychological trauma and adversity which, moderated by the childhood strengths of the individuals, had

Dissociative experiences in China.

The Dissociative Experiences Scale was administered to a non-clinical sample in Shanghai, China (N = 618) and the results were compared with a previous sample of the general population from Winnipeg, Canada (N = 1055). The Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule was administered to the 618 Chinese participants and results were compared with those of the Canadian participants (N = 502). In addition, both measures were administered to a sample of Chinese psychiatric inpatients (N = 423) and outpatients (N = 304). Rates of childhood trauma and dissociation were far lower in the Chinese non-clin

Dissociation among Swedish adolescents and the connection to trauma: an evaluation of the Swedish version of Adolescent Dissociative Experience Scale.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Swedish version of Adolescent Dissociative Experience Scale (A-DES), dissociative symptoms among Swedish adolescents, and dissociative symptoms connected to trauma and sexual and physical abuse. A normative group of 400 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years and a clinical group of 20 adolescents with known experienced trauma were given A-DES. A test-retest procedure was conducted with 90 subjects from the normative group. The results showed good reliability, internal consistency and test-retest. Factor analysis in the no

PTSD and physical comorbidity among women receiving Medicaid: results from service-use data.

Patterns of physical comorbidity among women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were explored using Michigan Medicaid claims data. PTSD-diagnosed women (n = 2,133) were compared with 14,948 randomly selected women in three health outcome areas: ICD-9 categories of disease, chronic conditions associated with sexual assault history in previous research, and reproductive health conditions. PTSD was associated with increased risk of all categories of diseases (OR range = 1.3-4.8), endometriosis (OR = 2.7), and dyspareunia (OR = 3.4). When PTSD was not complicated by other mental health cond

Sensory gating deficits, pattern completion, and disturbed fronto-limbic balance, a model for description of hallucinations and delusions in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia, if not the most difficult, is one of the most difficult mysterious puzzles for psychiatrists, psychologists, and neuroscientists to solve. In this paper, based on the previously known pathologies of schizophrenia, a new model is proposed for explanation of the formation of positive psychotic symptoms of hallucinations and delusions. This model can be used for understanding psychotic or psychotic-like positive symptoms of bipolar mood disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive, and amphetamine and drug-induced psychotic disorders. Based on the postulated model,

[Screening for major dissociative disorders with the FDS, the German version of the Dissociative Experience Scale].

UNLABELLED: The prevalence of major dissociative disorders (dissociative identity disorder, DID and similar forms of dissociative disorder not otherwise specified, DDNOS) in clinical samples is about 5 %. Despite their frequency, major dissociative disorders are often overseen for a long time. Screening-scales have proved to be effective to support clinical diagnosis. The aim of this study was to test, whether the Fragebogen für dissoziative Symptome (FDS), the German version of the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), differentiates between patients with dissociative disorders, non-dissociat

Dissociative Amnesia and DSM-IV-TR Cluster C Personality Traits.

Dissociative amnesia is a disorder characterized by retrospectively reported memory gaps. These gaps involve an inability to recall personal information, usually of a traumatic or stressful nature. Dissociative amnesia most commonly occurs in the presence of other psychiatric conditions, particularly personality disorders. In the literature and in clinical practice, it is often associated with DSM-IV-TR Cluster B personality disorders. However, there is evidence to suggest that dissociative amnesia may be more likely to occur among individuals with Cluster C personality disorders. Presented he

Dissociation in children's trauma narratives: an exploratory investigation.

This research examined the nature of children's trauma narrative themes and the relationship between these themes and concurrent and future trauma symptoms. Eighty-seven children aged 7-15 years, and their parents, participated following child exposure to a traumatic event requiring hospitalization. At 4-7 weeks post-trauma, a diagnostic interview was conducted with parents and a trauma narrative was obtained from the child. At 6 months post-trauma the diagnostic interview was re-conducted. Results provided only weak evidence of an association between dissociative trauma narrative themes and P

A discrimination based on autogenous versus reactive obsessions in obsessive-compulsive disorder and related clinical manifestations.

INTRODUCTION: Although putative subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been gradually more recognized, there is no generally accepted subtype discrimination. It has been suggested that autogenous and reactive obsessions stem from different cognitive process. This study aimed to assess existence of gender, age at onset of illness, and comorbidity differences in OCD patients suffering from autogenous and reactive obsessions. METHODS: The medical records of 177 OCD patients were evaluated retrospectively for gender, age at onset, comorbid diagnoses, and predisposing life events. Ob

Transfer of newly acquired stimulus valence between identities in dissociative identity disorder (DID).

Patients with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) frequently report episodes of interidentity amnesia, that is amnesia for events experienced by other identities. The goal of the present experiment was to test the implicit transfer of trauma-related information between identities in DID. We hypothesized that whereas declarative information may transfer from one identity to another, the emotional connotation of the memory may be dissociated, especially in the case of negative, trauma-related emotional valence. An evaluative conditioning procedure was combined with an affective priming procedur

Alexithymia: its prevalence and correlates in a British undergraduate sample.

INTRODUCTION: Alexithymia is characterized by a difficulty identifying and describing emotional states, as well as an externally oriented thinking style. This study investigated the prevalence of alexithymia in a British undergraduate sample and assesses its relationship to both parental bonding and dissociation. METHOD: The Toronto alexithymia scale (TAS-20), the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), and the Dissociative Experience Scale (DES) were administered to a sample of 181 male and 190 female undergraduate students from both arts and science subjects. RESULTS: Rates of alexithymia were

Childhood sexual abuse and psychosomatic symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by chronic gastrointestinal symptoms without a demonstrable physical cause. In a subgroup of patients, irritable bowel syndrome may be part of a cluster of psychosomatic symptoms related to childhood sexual abuse. To investigate this possibility, the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS), the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) and the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) were administered to 105 subjects with either irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), or other gastrointestinal disorders. State dissociation in bulimic eating disorders: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Dissociation and binge eating appear to have equivalent functions, lowering awareness of generalized threat and negative self-esteem. Dissociation can be a general characteristic of the individual, present in all situations (i.e., a trait), or it can be a time-limited reaction to a specific situation (i.e., a state). Previous studies have shown that the subliminal presentation of threat cues leads to increased bulimic behaviors. This experimental study examines whether dissociation is activated under similar conditions, thus testing whether dissociation is a reactive state in bulim

Pathways to PTSD, part I: Children with burns.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to develop a model of risk factors for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a group of acutely burned children. METHOD: Seventy-two children between the ages of 7 and 17 who were admitted to the hospital for an acute burn were eligible for study. Members of families who consented completed the Child PTSD Reaction Index, the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children, and other self-report measures of psychopathology and environmental stress both during the hospitalization and 3 months following the burn. A path analytic strategy was used to build a mo

The rise of club drugs in a heroin society: the case of Hong Kong.

Although the contemporary dance drug scene is a global phenomenon, with many countries and cultures reporting similar developments with ecstasy and other club drug use, the scene, in many respects, is a reflection and expression of local culture. This article examines the rise of the dance drug scene in a society long associated with opiate use. After briefly describing Hong Kong's drug history, this article describes the diversification of its drug market to include ecstasy and ketamine in the context of a distinctive dance setting. The paper examines the trends in club drug use, particularly

Patterns of polydrug use among ketamine injectors in New York City.

Polydrug use is an important public health issue since it has been linked to significant adverse health outcomes. Recently, club drugs, including ketamine and other drugs used in dance/rave scenes, have been identified as key substances in new types of polydrug using patterns. While seemingly a self-explanatory concept, "polydrug" use constitutes multiple drug using practices that may impact upon health risks. Ketamine, a club drug commonly administered intranasally among youth for its disassociative properties, has emerged as a drug increasingly prevalent among a new hidden population of inje

Predicting posttraumatic stress disorder from acute reactions.

There is much interest in identifying people shortly after trauma exposure who will subsequently develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This review outlines recent developments in early identification of trauma-exposed people who are at high risk for PTSD development, including the rationale, evidence, and limitations of the acute stress diagnosis as a predictor of chronic PTSD. The potential role of acute dissociative responses mediating development of PTSD is also reviewed. The available evidence suggests that whereas acute dissociation is an important factor in the acute stress respo

Dissociative experiences in children with abuse histories: a replication in Puerto Rico.

This study examined the use of a Spanish version of the Child Dissociative Checklist (CDC) in Puerto Rico. The CDC was administered to the primary caretakers of three groups of children: 31 with documented abuse histories, 30 with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), 33 with no abuse or psychiatric record. Results confirmed the reliability and validity of the CDC and revealed that Puerto Rican children with abuse histories showed significantly higher levels of dissociation than the children in the other two groups. Moreover, more than half of the abused children had a score above t
