Dissociation, psychopathology, and abusive experiences in a nonclinical Latino university student group.

A variety of clinical and experimental data suggest that many individuals who report abusive and traumatic experiences also report a wide array of dissociative and other psychopathological symptoms. In this study, 198 Puerto Rican undergraduate students participated in a study to examine the possible relationship between different types of traumatic experiences and the self-report of dissociative experiences, depressive symptoms, and general psychopathology. Another aspect of this study was the examination of the psychometric properties of the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) in a Latino s

[Dissociative disorders: from Janet to DSM-IV].

I reviewed the literature on dissociation and dissociative disorders from Pierre Janet to DSM-IV, and examined the current trends in research. Janet's theory on hysteria is multifaceted, and is based on three psychological models. Based on a hierarchical model, Janet related hysteric symptoms to the activities within the lower strata of mental hierarchy (automatisms psychologiques), which were demonstrably shown in somnambulism. A second model was based on the concept of a psychological system, which was hypothetically composed of ideas, images, feelings, sensations, and movements. According t

Frequency of dissociative disorders among psychiatric outpatients in Turkey.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of dissociative disorders among psychiatric outpatients in Turkey. One hundred fifty consecutive outpatients admitted to the psychiatry clinic of a university hospital were screened with the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES). Twenty-three patients (15.3%) with a DES score greater than 30 and a comparison group selected from the same outpatient population who scored less than 10 on the scale were then interviewed with the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS) in a blind fashion. According to the DDIS, 18 patients (12.0%) receive

Associations of self-reported past "psychotic" phenomena with features of personality disorders.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) may present with "psychotic" phenomena, which can be defined as a range of specified "altered experiences of reality." This study investigated the associations between self-reported past psychotic phenomena and features of DSM-III-R personality disorders (PDs) in 57 inpatients without a previous diagnosis of the main disorders that involve delusions and hallucinations. The present findings include associations between past psychotic phenomena and features of BPD, between repeated self-harm and a report that "thoughts seemed put into head," an

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to extend our knowledge of associations among the constructs of alexithymia, depression, somatization and dissociation. SAMPLING AND METHODS: 924 nonclinical subjects answered questions about depression (21-item Beck Depression Inventory), somatization (13-item somatization part of Symptom Check List-90), dissociation (28-item Dissociative Experiences Scale) and alexithymia (20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale). In addition, a 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) was administered to detect psychiatric distress among subjects. RESULTS: The results

Dissociative Spectrum Disorders in the Primary Care Setting.

Dissociative disorders have a lifetime prevalence of about 10%. Dissociative symptoms may occur in acute stress disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, somatization disorder, substance abuse, trance and possession trance, Ganser's syndrome, and dissociative identity disorder, as well as in mood disorders, psychoses, and personality disorders. Dissociative symptoms and disorders are observed frequently among patients attending our rural South Carolina community mental health center. Given the prevalence of mental illness in primary care settings and the diagnostic difficulties encountered with

Psychometric properties of the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire (SASRQ): a valid and reliable measure of acute stress.

A reliable and valid measure is needed for assessing the psychological symptoms experienced in the aftermath of a traumatic event. Previous research suggests that trauma victims typically experience dissociative, anxiety and other symptoms, during or shortly after a traumatic event. Although some of these symptoms may protect the trauma victim from pain, they may also lead to acute stress, posttraumatic stress, or other disorders. The Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire (SASRQ) was developed to evaluate anxiety and dissociation symptoms in the aftermath of traumatic events, following

Frightening maternal behavior linking unresolved loss and disorganized infant attachment.

Main and Hesse's (1990) model in which frightening (threatening, frightened, or dissociated) parental behavior explains why infants of parents with unresolved loss develop disorganized attachment relationships was tested. Unresolved loss using the Adult Attachment Interview in a nonclinical middle-class sample of 85 mothers who had experienced the loss of someone important was assessed. Disorganized attachment was examined in the Strange Situation. Parental behavior was recorded during 22-hr home visits. The model applied to mothers with currently insecure attachment representations. Secure mo

Hypnotic recall: a positive criterion in the differential diagnosis between epileptic and pseudoepileptic seizures.

PURPOSE: Because the diagnosis of pseudoepileptic seizures (PESs) is mostly made by excluding epilepsy, availability of a positive criterion for PESs is of great importance. This study was aimed at the validation of a diagnostic technique that intends to provide in such a positive criterion. METHODS: In 17 patients with epileptic seizures (ESs) and 20 patients with PESs, a hypnotic procedure was performed by an investigator blind to other data to recover amnesia for the ictus. If recall was obtained, the experimental diagnosis PES was given; if not, ES was diagnosed. The experimental diagnose

Major mental disorders in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. III. Neurotic and somatoform disorders.

This report presents estimates of the lifetime and point (one-month) prevalence of phobic anxiety, dissociative, other anxiety and somatoform disorders based on a survey conducted in Addis Ababa between September and December of 1994. An Amharic version of the CIDI was used to collect data from a random community sample of 1420 individuals aged 15 and above. Phobic anxiety disorders were found to be the most common of all anxiety disorders, with lifetime prevalence of 4.8%. The lifetime prevalence for dissociative disorders was 0.8% and for other anxiety disorders it was 2.7%. The prevalence o

Comment on the effectiveness of treatment for dissociative identity disorder.

Methodological criticisms of a recent study on treatment outcome of dissociative identity disorder are accurate: however, the outcome study is more methodologically sound than any previous work and therefore advances the field. The design of other studies and the conclusions to be drawn from the study under discussion are reviewed.

Dissociation, abuse and the eating disorders: evidence from an Australian population.

OBJECTIVE: A number of European and Northern American studies have investigated a possible association between dissociative phenomena, eating disorders, child sexual abuse and self-mutilation. However, there has been little confirmation from other countries and cultures, and the Australian experience of these interrelationships has not previously been studied. METHOD: Dissociative symptomatology and self-reported history of abusive experiences, physical and sexual, were retrospectively studied in a sample of Australian eating disordered patients using a self-report measure, the Dissociation Q

Behavioral effects of ketamine, an NMDA glutamatergic antagonist, in non-human primates.

RATIONALE: The dopamine hypothesis is the most widely investigated theory underlying schizophrenia and the mechanisms of action for antipsychotic drugs. However, recent studies call into question this proposal. Thus, the focus has turned towards other mechanisms, one of which has been glutamatergic systems. Phencyclidine (PCP), a potent NMDA receptor antagonist, causes a schizophrenic-like psychosis in normal volunteers and exacerbates psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Ketamine, like PCP, is a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, which is short acting and has been used as

Dissociative identity disorder and the sociocognitive model: recalling the lessons of the past.

In a recent article in this journal, D. H. Gleaves (1996) criticized the sociocognitive model (SCM; N. P. Spanos, 1994) of dissociative identity disorder (DID) and argued in favor of a posttraumatic model (PTM) in which DID is conceptualized as a consequence of childhood abuse and other traumatic events. The present authors demonstrate that (a) many of Gleaves's arguments were predicated on misunderstandings of the SCM, (b) scrutiny of the evidence regarding the psychopathology and assessment of DID raises questions concerning the PTM's conceptual and empirical underpinnings, (c) the treatment

Naltrexone in the treatment of dissociative symptoms in patients with borderline personality disorder: an open-label trial.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative phenomena, including flashbacks, are common in patients with borderline personality disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although dissociative symptoms can be severe and may interfere with psychotherapy, there is no established pharmacotherapy for these symptoms. Evidence suggests that alterations of the endogenous opiate system contribute to dissociative symptoms in patients with borderline personality disorder and PTSD. METHOD: We treated 2 groups of female borderline personality disorder patients (N = 13, with an overlap of 5 patients between the 2 gr

An overview of the psychotherapy of dissociative identity disorder.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is identified and studied with increasing frequency. However, the controversy that often surrounds DID can make it difficult to approach its treatment in a circumspect manner. This paper will provide an overview of DID treatment as it is practiced by those experienced and skilled in the treatment of this group of patients. The treatment of DID resembles the treatment of other traumatized populations in that it is stage-oriented, beginning with supportive and strengthening work. Various stances toward the treatment of DID are reviewed, and specific issues th

The tactical-integration model for the treatment of dissociative identity disorder and allied dissociative disorders.

The ebb and flow of the diagnosis of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and other dissociative conditions has led to the evolution of theories and treatment modalities to resolve the fluctuating and ephemerous symptoms of these conditions. This paper summarizes the structured cognitive-behavioral-based treatment of dissociative disorders that will foster not only symptom relief but also an integration of the personalities and/or ego states into one mainstream of consciousness. This model of DID therapy is called the tactical integration model; it promotes proficiency over posttraumatic and d

[Acute peri-traumatic dissociative experiences: assessment and course].

Previous research has identified acute stress symptoms, particularly peri-traumatic dissociative symptoms (the distortion of consciousness, depersonalization, derealization, automatic movements, flashbacks with illusions or hallucinations), as risk factors for the development of later posttraumatic stress disorder. Numerous retrospective assessments and current prospective studies confirm these findings. It is suggested that peri-traumatic dissociation be assessed immediately after traumatic exposure and during the weeks following. But traumatized victims may present other categories of acute

[Diagnostic, forensic and therapeutic-ethical aspects of false memory of sexual abuse induced by psychotherapy].

This article examines the risk of false memories induced by psychotherapy with special regard to sexual abuse. Current psychological constructs based on depth psychology are reviewed critically. The multitude of psychological disorders connected with sexual abuse in recent time and a subjectivistic misunderstanding of empathy frequently lead sometimes to uncritical acceptance of anamnestic reports about sexual abuse. Thus, the question of what really happened often is risen not before forensic appraisals. It can be shown that the descriptive psychiatric view and depth psychological oriented co

A Jacksonian and biopsychosocial hypothesis concerning borderline and related phenomena.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to develop an aetiological model for borderline personality disorder. METHOD: The postulates of Hughlings Jackson are used to provide a preliminary explanatory framework for borderline phenomena. As a necessary background to this discussion, the findings concerning abuse in the early history of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and other conditions, notably somatisation disorder and dissociative states, are briefly reviewed. Other data, including family studies, which might have significance in the aetiology of BPD are also reviewed. RESULTS: The hypot
