Comparison of death anxiety symptoms between generalized anxiety disorder and somatization disorder in geriatric patients attending a psychiatric outpatient clinic for the first time.

Somatic complaints are among the important complaints frequently seen in Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD). Death anxiety has also increased significantly with the Covid-19 pandemic, especially in the elderly population. In this study, we compared the difference of the death anxiety level among patients with GAD, SSD and healthy controls. This cross-sectional study which was carried out in Artvin State Hospital's Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic included 59 participants (GAD = 21, SSD = 18, HC = 20). Three groups were subjected to detailed psychiatric examinati

A case of NMDAR Encephalitis with muscular pain as the main presentation.

BACKGROUND: Persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) is often the initial diagnosis in patients seeking treatment in psychiatric departments, making it challenging to consider organic nervous system diseases. However, autoimmune encephalitis can present with atypical initial symptoms, leading to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. Lumbar puncture, with antibody support, plays a crucial role in diagnosing autoimmune encephalitis. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a 40-year-old male adult patient who was initially diagnosed with persistent somatoform pain disorder in 2022. The patient re

Novel intervention of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with somatic symptom disorder and its safety and outcome.

Somatic Symptom disorders (SSDs) are characterised by the presence of persistent somatic symptoms associated with excessive thoughts, feelings and behaviours related to the symptoms. However, current treatment modalities are non-specific with modest effects. We aim to explore the safety and outcome of high-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation at medial Prefrontal Cortex in ten such patients. Patient Health Questionnaire-15, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale were applied to ten patients with Somatic Symptom Disorder. 15 sessions of 15Hz TMS using a do

Clinical characterisation of women with persistent genital arousal disorder: the iPGAD-study.

Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) is a rare condition-mostly in women-where patients perceive prolonged genital arousal without any sexual desire or stimulation. Etiopathological considerations reach from peripheral to central issues over local disturbance of the pudendal nerve to neuropathy, psychosocial, and pharmacological theories. Since well controlled clinical studies about PGAD in conjunction with a mental and somatic health status are missing, this study is a detailed clinical investigation of PGAD patients compared to healthy controls. 26 women who fulfilled diagnostic criter

Infrared Thermography: Clinical Value for Diagnosing Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorders?

BACKGROUND: Patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) are not uncommon. Still, the disease diagnosis relies primarily on structured interviews, with no objective indicators yet available to aid in the diagnosis. This has led to low diagnostic rates and overconsumption of health care resources for the disorder. Although there is a large body of research to improve the diagnosis of the condition, there are currently no objective indicators available for diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical value of infrared thermography (IRT) for diagnosing

Review of Fibromyalgia (FM) Syndrome Treatments.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disease characterized by widespread musculoskeletal chronic pain that impairs the patient's quality of life and is considered a somatization disorder. The symptoms of the disease also affect the patient mentally, mainly since invisible pain is the only thing that indicates its existence. A typical symptom that characterizes FM patients is the lack of acceptance of the disease since its pathophysiology is not elucidated, hence the deficiencies in its management, or rather, cognitively, the belief that there is no disease to manage. The current paper aims to sh

Specialized Biopsychosocial Care in Inpatient Somatic Medicine Units-A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Specialized biopsychosocial care concepts are necessary to overcome the dualism between physical and psychosocial treatment in acute care hospitals. For patients with complex and chronic comorbid physical and mental health problems, neither standardized psychiatric/psychosomatic nor somatic care units alone are appropriate to their needs. The " N uremberg I ntegrated P sychosomatic A cute Unit" (NIPA) has been developed to integrate treatment of both, psychosocial and physical impairments, in an acute somatic care setting.
