A Systematic Literature Review of the Association Between Somatic Symptom Disorder and Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) and antisocial personality disorder (APSD) are found at higher rates within families compared to the general population. Both disorders are characterized by low serotonin levels, which may be attributed to polymorphisms in the dopa decarboxylase (DDC) gene. The polymorphism rs11575542 of the gene leads to decreasing the efficiency of aromatic l-amino decarboxylase (AADC) and serotonin levels in a person. The polymorphism is also associated with the development of somatic symptoms and sensation-seeking behavior, a trait underlying APSD. Hence, the role of this pol

Enhanced Connectivity of Thalamo-Cortical Networks in First-Episode, Treatment-Naive Somatization Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunctions of the thalamus and its projections to cortical cortices have been implicated in patient with somatization disorder (SD). However, changes in the anatomical specificity of thalamo-cortical functional connectivity (FC) in SD remain unclear. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI scans were collected in 25 first-episode, drug-naive patients with SD, as well as 28 sex-, age-, and education-matched healthy controls. We parcellated the thalamus with seven predefined regions of interest (ROIs) and used them as seeds to map whole-brain FC. Correlation analysis was conducted in the pati

Epidemiology of mental health problems in COVID-19: a review.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a pandemic affecting health and wellbeing globally. In addition to the physical health, economic, and social implications, the psychological impacts of this pandemic are increasingly being reported in the scientific literature. This narrative review reflected on scholarly articles on the epidemiology of mental health problems in COVID-19. The current literature suggests that people affected by COVID-19 may have a high burden of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, stress, panic attack, irrational anger, impuls

Frequency-specific alterations of the frontal-cerebellar circuit in first-episode, drug-naive somatization disorder.

BACKGROUND: With the development of imaging techniques, evidence of abnormal neural activity has been implicated in patients with somatization disorder (SD). It remains unclear whether abnormal spontaneous neural activities are related to specific frequency bands. In this study, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using the frequency-specific amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) approach was applied to investigate changes in spontaneous neural activity in different frequency bands in patients with SD. METHODS: Twenty-five first-episode, medication-naive patient

Common mental disorders among patients attending monk healers and primary health care centres in Thailand: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the rate of common mental disorders in patients consulting monk healers or health centres in Thailand. METHODS: Patients consecutively consulting monk healers or health centres were assessed with screening measures of three common mental disorders (major depressive, general anxiety and somatization disorder). RESULTS: The prevalence of any common mental disorder was significantly higher in patients attending monk healers (31.1%) than those attending primary care health centres (22.3%) (P < 0.001). Likewise, the prevalence of each common mental disorder

A retrospective observational study comparing somatosensory amplification in fibromyalgia, chronic pain, psychiatric disorders and healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVES: Somatosensory amplification (SA) has been described as an important feature of somatoform disorders, and an "amplifying somatic style" has been reported as a negative connotation of body perception. As widespread pain (WSP) in fibromyalgia (FM) is due to a central sensitization (CS) rather than organic alterations, there has been discussion as to whether FM is equivalent to or distinct from somatization disorder (SD). Assuming SD and FM are two distinct entities, an increase in somatic amplification should be expected only in subjects who have SD, regardless of the type of pain the

Aberrant Thalamic-Centered Functional Connectivity in Patients with Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder.

PURPOSE: Recent task-based fMRI studies have shown that Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder (PSPD) patients demonstrated aberrant activity in a wide range of brain regions associated with sensation, cognition and emotion. However, these specific task-based studies could not clearly uncover the alterations in the spontaneous brain networks that were associated with the general pain-related symptoms in PSPD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the present study, 13 PSPD patients and 23 matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Resting state and 3D structural imaging data were collected during magnetic

Briquet syndrome revisited: implications for functional neurological disorder.

With the creation of the Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders category of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition in 2013, the functional neurological (symptom) disorder diagnostic criteria underwent transformative changes. These included an emphasis on 'rule-in' physical examination signs/semiological features guiding diagnosis and the removal of a required proximal psychological stressor to be linked to symptoms. In addition, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition somatization disorder, somatoform pain disorder and undiffer

Fears of getting a severe disease (health anxiety) are widespread and their pathological manifestation as Hypochondriacal disorder (ICD-10) is cost-intensive for the health care system. In recent years advances in the research on and development of effective psychotherapeutic treatments have been made. Cognitive-behavioral therapy concepts currently are treatments of choice for Hypochondriacal disorder.

Physical activity is indirectly associated with pain in college women through associations with somatization and panic disorder symptoms: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: This study tested whether the severity of somatization, panic, generalized anxiety, and depression symptoms mediated relationships between physical activity and pain using structural equation modeling. METHODS: College women (n = 1036; mean = SD age of 19.7 ± 3.0 years) reported past week physical activity and the presence of persistent pain (≥1 month). The Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire assessed hypothesized mediators of physical activity effects on pain via symptoms of generalized anxiety, panic, major depressive disorder, and somatization disorder. RESULTS: The pe

INTRODUCTION: Somatization Disorder (SD) is known to cause disability and impact the quality of life due to psychological and somatic distress. Though it is a Common Mental Disorder (CMD), the disorder tends to visit all levels of health care, among which prevalence of SD at tertiary care is 10.1%. AIMS: To estimate current prevalence and its correlates of socio-clinical factors in SD at a quaternary mental health centre (QMHC). METHODS: Total of 422 adult subjects were selected through systematic random sampling at first contact psychiatry outpatient clinic. Subjects were interviewed with M

Voxel-based global-brain functional connectivity alterations in first-episode drug-naive patients with somatization disorder.

BACKGROUND: Altered functional connectivity (FC) is associated with the pathophysiology of patients with somatization disorder (SD). However, inconsistent results were obtained due to different selections of regions of interest (ROIs) in previous researches. This study aims to examine voxel-wise brain-wide FC alterations in patients with first-episode, drug-naive SD in an unbiased way. METHODS: A total of 25 patients with SD and 28 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Global-brain FC (GFC) was applied to analyze the

Adult-Onset Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome: Psychogenic or Organic? The Challenge of Abnormal Neurophysiological Findings.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics. Adult-onset cases are rare and may be due to "reactivation" of childhood tics, or secondary to psychiatric or genetic diseases, or due to central nervous system lesions of different etiologies. Late-onset psychogenic motor/vocal tics resembling GTS have been described. Neurophysiology may serve to differentiate organic from functional GTS. Altered blink reflex pre-pulse inhibition (BR-PPI), blink reflex excitability recovery (BR-ERC), and short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) have been described in

The prognosis of functional limb weakness: a 14-year case-control study.

Reliable data on the prognosis of functional motor disorder are scarce, as existing studies of the prognosis of functional motor disorder are nearly all retrospective, small and uncontrolled. In this study we used a prospectively recruited, controlled cohort design to assess misdiagnosis, mortality and symptomatic and health outcome in patients with functional limb weakness compared to neurological disease and healthy control subjects. We also carried out an exploratory analysis for baseline factors predicting outcome. One hundred and seven patients with functional limb weakness, 46 neurologic

A case report of psychiatric symptoms following direct-acting antiviral and ribavirin combination therapy for chronic hepatitis C in a patient with innate anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) result in a highly sustained virological response rate and better patient tolerance. However, this therapeutic approach may, on rare occasions, give rise to psychiatric symptoms. We describe a case requiring discontinuation of DAA and ribavirin combination therapy due to psychiatric symptoms in a patient with congenital anxious personality traits. The information summarized here will be helpful to physicians treating chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in patients with underlying psychiatric problems. Increased Nucleus Accumbens Connectivity in Resting-State Patients With Drug-Naive, First-Episode Somatization Disorder.

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays an important role in the reward circuit, and abnormal regional activities of the reward circuit have been reported in various psychiatric disorders including somatization disorder (SD). However, few researches are designed to analyze the NAc connectivity in SD. This study was designed to explore the NAc connectivity in first-episode, drug-naive patients with SD using the bilateral NAc as seeds. Twenty-five first-episode, drug-naive patients with SD and 28 healthy controls were recruited. Functional connectivity (FC) was designed to analyze the images. LIBSVM (

[Cognitive-behavioral therapy at the Pavillon Albert-Prévost's specialized outpatient clinics during the last 50 years: innovations and evolution].

The Pavillon Albert-Prévost (PAP) has played a leading role in the development of modern psychiatry in the province of Québec. It has also been, in the francophone milieu, the teaching hospital that was the most deeply influenced by psychoanalytic theories. The arrival of somatic approaches, particularly biofeedback and relaxation, in the Psychosomatic medicine and consultation-liaison service, as introduced by Dr. Jacques Monday in the 1970s, was initially greeted with great scepticism by the majority of his colleagues at PAP. In the 1980s and 1990s, Dr. Camille Laurin, then head of the depar
