INTRODUCTION: Although global opioid consumption is decreasing, high-income populations are experiencing an increase. Data on specific opioid-prescribed and at-risk patient groups in Austria are lacking.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational population-based study analysing health insurance data between January 2016 and December 2021. The dataset included demographic information; hospital data, including coded primary and secondary discharge diagnoses; and prescription data for all legally available opioids and nonopioid analgesics. The primary objective was to describe trends i

OBJECTIVE: The rising prevalence of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) lacks specific treatment options. While acupuncture shows promise for mental health, its efficacy for SSD remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to clarify the evidence on acupuncture's effectiveness for SSD.
METHODS: Eight databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science (WoS), China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI), etc. were searched from the inception to 15 March 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the effect of acupuncture used alone or in combination with

BACKGROUND: Persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) is often the initial diagnosis in patients seeking treatment in psychiatric departments, making it challenging to consider organic nervous system diseases. However, autoimmune encephalitis can present with atypical initial symptoms, leading to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. Lumbar puncture, with antibody support, plays a crucial role in diagnosing autoimmune encephalitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a 40-year-old male adult patient who was initially diagnosed with persistent somatoform pain disorder in 2022. The patient re

AIM: There is a need to elucidate intermittent Theta burst stimulation (iTBS) as a novel treatment in persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD).
METHODS: Twenty patients were randomly allocated to active iTBS (n = 11) and sham iTBS (n = 9) and received 10 iTBS sessions, 2 sessions per day, sequentially to primary motor and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices for 5 days in a week. Each iTBS session comprised of 2 sec. per train of 10 bursts (3 pulses per burst at 50 Hz; total 30 pulses) and were given with a gap of 5 Hz, total of 20 trains, and 600 pulses. Patients with chronic pain report reduced quality of life and high symptom burden while often responding insufficiently to treatment options. Mirror therapy has been proven to be effective in treating phantom limb pain and other conditions such as CRPS. This study was designed to investigate the efficacy of mirror therapy in patients with somatoform pain disorders on symptom severity and associated physiological parameters. Fifteen patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (F45.40) or chronic pain disorder with somatic and psychological factors (F45.41) participated and received four w

BACKGROUND: Patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) are not uncommon. Still, the disease diagnosis relies primarily on structured interviews, with no objective indicators yet available to aid in the diagnosis. This has led to low diagnostic rates and overconsumption of health care resources for the disorder. Although there is a large body of research to improve the diagnosis of the condition, there are currently no objective indicators available for diagnosis.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical value of infrared thermography (IRT) for diagnosing

PURPOSE: Recent task-based fMRI studies have shown that Persistent Somatoform Pain Disorder (PSPD) patients demonstrated aberrant activity in a wide range of brain regions associated with sensation, cognition and emotion. However, these specific task-based studies could not clearly uncover the alterations in the spontaneous brain networks that were associated with the general pain-related symptoms in PSPD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the present study, 13 PSPD patients and 23 matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Resting state and 3D structural imaging data were collected during magnetic

AIM: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is known to be effective for patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD). Improvement of negative emotions in interpersonal stressful situations has been reported to reduce PSPD-related clinical pain. However, these associations in CBT remain unclear. Therefore, we examined the relation between changes in negative emotions and clinical pain symptoms after CBT by using a multiple regression analysis that included pain catastrophizing.
METHODS: We analyzed negative emotional intensity scores in stressful situations of 38 patients with PSPD wh

This study investigated the degree of brain functional impairment in persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) by examining changes in the patterns of brain functional hubs. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 21 PSPD patients with headache as the main symptom and 17 sex- and age-matched healthy controls. Degree centrality (DC) analysis as well as the connectivity among these hubs by functional connectivity (FC) analysis and Granger causality analysis (GCA) were performed to characterize abnormal brain networks in PSPD (Gaussian random field corrected: P < 0.0

Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic widespread pain, unrefreshing sleep, physical exhaustion, and cognitive difficulties. It occurs in all populations throughout the world, with prevalence between 2% and 4% in general populations. Definition, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of FM remain points of contention, with some even contesting its existence. The various classification systems according to pain medicine, psychiatry, and neurology (pain disease; persistent somatoform pain disorder; masked depression; somatic symptom disorder; small fiber neuropathy; brain disease) mostly

Somatoform pain disorders (SPD) are common, disabling and do not respond well to existing treatment modalities. We investigated the usefulness of 18 sessions of high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation delivered at the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in five right-handed patients with SPD. All patients reported significant improvement in pain relief and activities of daily living. High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) delivered at the left DLPFC may be useful in SPD.

Patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) usually experience various functional impairments in pain, emotion, and cognition, which cannot be fully explained by a physiological process or a physical disorder. However, it is still not clear for the mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of PSPD. The present study aimed to explore the intra- and inter-network functional connectivity (FC) differences between PSPD patients and healthy controls (HCs). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in 13 PSPD patients and 23 age- and gender-matched HCs. We used independent c

CONTEXT: The clinical treatment of somatoform pain disorder (SPD) commonly combines antianxiety and antidepressant medication with pain medication, yet the method often entails a lengthy treatment, with uncertain outcomes, and, on occasion, significant side effects. Acupuncture can activate a patient's own pain control system, stimulate blood flow, repair the physical damage of emotional distress, reduce pain, lift mood, and boost the immune system.
OBJECTIVE: The study intended to evaluate the benefits of adding a small dosage of fluoxetine hydrochloride (Prozac) to electroacupuncture treatm

The clinical manifestation and clinical diagnosis and treatment of acupuncture for persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) were observed to explore its etiology. It is found that the causative factor of PSPD is probably relevant with pain memory induced by the negative emotions during the first attack of pain, which is in the category of "depression" in TCM. In clinical diagnosis, the medical history should be explored to discover the potential etiology and determine the diagnosis. In treatment, the root cause should be considered, focusing on mind and qi regulation and associating with ana

Persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) is a mental disorder un-associated with any somatic injury and can cause severe somatosensory and emotional impairments in patients. However, so far, the neuro-pathophysiological mechanism of the functional impairments in PSPD is still unclear. The present study assesses the difference in regional spontaneous activity between PSPD and healthy controls (HC) during a resting state, in order to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying PSPD. Resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging data were obtained from 13 PSPD patients and 23 age- and gend

It is often difficult to pass an expert opinion in cases of chronic back pain. This article analyses the differential diagnostic considerations related to coding various causes in line with ICD-10. It emphasises the I importance of making a careful distinction between orthopoedic and psychiatric conditions and disorders. Simultaneous coding of orthopoedic and psychiatric illnesses and disorders based on a distinct cluster of symptoms necessitates an interdisciplinary approach that consistently applies the ICD-10 definitions of mental an behavioural disorders in order to clearly identify the ma

Patients with persistent somatoform pain disorder (PSPD) suffer from long-term pain and emotional conflicts. Recently, accumulating evidence indicated that emotion has a significant role in pain perception of somatoform pain disorder. To further understand the association between emotion and pain-related brain activities, functional activities of patients with PSPD fulfilling ICD-10 criteria and healthy controls were assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging technology, while participants viewed a series of positive, neutral, or negative pictures with or without pinprick pain stimul

BACKGROUND: Persistent somatoform pain disorder (SPD) is a condition in which the patient suffers from persistent, severe and distressing pain; and from associated physical and psychological distress. While presence of restless leg syndrome (RLS) in SPD is understudied, their association might have an impact on general well-being and quality of life (QoL) in SPD.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Present study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of RLS in SPD patients attending outpatient department services at a tertiary care institute in eastern India.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and forty consec
