Impact of parasitic infection on mental health and illness in humans in Africa: a systematic review.

A growing body of research implicates inflammation as a potential pathway in the aetiology and pathophysiology of some mental illnesses. A systematic review was conducted to determine the association between parasitic infection and mental illnesses in humans in Africa and reviewed the state of the evidence available. The search focused on publications from Africa documenting the relationship between parasites from two parasite groups, helminths and protozoans, and four classifications of mental illness: mood affective disorders, neurotic and stress-related disorders, schizotypal disorders and

The Role of Mental Health and Behavioral Disorders in the Development of Temporomandibular Disorder: A SWEREG-TMD Nationwide Case-Control Study.

PURPOSE: There is a well-known association between mental and behavioral disorders (MBD) and temporomandibular disorder (TMD), although the association has not been established in population-based samples. This study aimed to investigate this relationship using national population-based registry data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This case-control study used prospectively collected data from Swedish national registries to investigate exposure to MBD and the probability of developing TMD in all Swedish citizens with hospital-diagnosed or surgically treated TMD between 1998 and 2016. Odds ratios were

Burden of psychiatric morbidity among attendees of a secondary level hospital in Northern India: Implications for integration of mental health care at subdistrict level.

BACKGROUND: There is little information available on the type, pattern, trend, and demographic differentials of psychiatric cases attending a subdistrict level facility in India. Our objectives were to describe the sociodemographic profile of the patients availing the psychiatric outpatient department services and document the diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is based on a retrospective analysis of routinely recorded administrative data collected during psychiatry consultations that took place between January 2010 and June 2014, at the subdistrict level hospital, Ballabgarh, Farid

Prior psychiatric inpatient care and risk of cesarean sections: a registry study.

This study of 17,443 childbearing women, investigated the relationship between hospital admissions 5 years prior to index birth, type of mental disorders and risk factors for mode of delivery. Hospital based electronic perinatal medical records between 2001 and 2006, were linked with the Swedish National Inpatient Care Registry 1996-2006. Of all the women, 39.3% had had inpatient care prior to index birth (27.3% had had obstetric, 10.1% somatic, and 1.9% psychiatric inpatient care). Diagnoses of mental disorders at psychiatric admission (n=333) were categorized into five groups: personality/be

Individual differences in personality predict how people look at faces.

BACKGROUND: Determining the ways in which personality traits interact with contextual determinants to shape social behavior remains an important area of empirical investigation. The specific personality trait of neuroticism has been related to characteristic negative emotionality and associated with heightened attention to negative, emotionally arousing environmental signals. However, the mechanisms by which this personality trait may shape social behavior remain largely unspecified. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We employed eye tracking to investigate the relationship between characteristi

Dhat syndrome: is it a distinct clinical entity? A study of illness behaviour characteristics.

Dhat syndrome is a culture-bound neurotic disorder seen in the Indian subcontinent. The disorder has recently been included in ICD-10. In the present study, illness behaviour of 50 dhat syndrome patients was studied using a Hindi version of Illness Behaviour Questionnaire (IBQ) and was compared with 50 controls. Sixty-six percent of dhat syndrome patients received unspecified diagnoses on DSM-III-R. Patients with dhat syndrome showed a distinct illness behaviour profile consisting of higher scores on IBQ factors of general hypochondriasis and affective discomfort and lower scores on denial com

Perceived depriving parental rearing and depression.

Four groups of depressed patients 47 unipolars, 21 bipolars, 34 with neurotic-reactive depression, and 39 with unspecified depressive disorder completed, after recovery, the EMBU, a Swedish instrument aimed at assessing the experience of parental rearing practices. The results for three factors: "rejection", "emotional warmth" and "over-protection" and the global judgement scores of "severity" and "consistency" in rearing attitudes were compared with those obtained from 205 healthy individuals. Depressed patients, particularly in the unipolar unspecified groups rated both parents lower than th

Social class and social mobility in depressed patients.

In the present study current social class, parental social class and social mobility have been compared in a series of 111 depressed patients of different diagnostic subgroups and of 97 non-psychiatric controls. Social class III was shown to be overrepresented in the unipolar, bipolar and unspecified groups. However, no differences concerning parental social class emerged. Unipolar and bipolar patients were more downwardly mobile than the neurotic depressives, the unspecified depressives and the controls.

Parapartum mental illness: timing of illness onset and its relation to symptoms and sociodemographic characteristics.

Clinical pictures and certain sociodemographic factors were studied retrospectively in all women in the county of Stockholm who had a baby during 1976-77 and also had been admitted to a psychiatric department after the 20th week of pregnancy or during the first postpartum year. The sample was classified according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria. A significant rise in the incidence of mental illness was found within the first 3 months postpartum and particularly so within 1 month postpartum as compared with during pregnancy and the following 9 months. This peak in incidence was due to a ris

Cumulated need for psychiatric service as shown in a community psychiatric project.

District psychiatric services often supplement intramural mental health programmes. They usually result in an increase in the number of referrals to the mental health facilities, which reflects a cumulative need for psychiatric examination and treatment in the population. A significant decrease in the annual first referral rates per 1000 inhabitants aged 15 years and above is apparent in an analysis of the trends in the Danish Samsø community psychiatric service from its inception in 1957 until 1982. The average annual rates were 19.4 in the first 5-year period, 10.0 in the second 5-year perio

Personality traits in former depressed patients and in healthy subjects without past history of depression.

208 patients (81 male and 127 female) in the age range 21-67 years completed a Swedish personality inventory (Karolinska Sjukhusets Personlighetsinventorium; KSP) aimed at measuring stable personality traits after recovering from the depressive syndrome. Diagnostically, the series comprised 62 unipolars, 31 bipolars, 58 neurotic-reactive depressives, and 57 patients with an 'unspecified' depressive disorder, i.e., those patients who did not meet the criteria for inclusion in any of the aforementioned groups. As a contrast group, a series of 75 mentally healthy individuals (27 men and 48 women

Life events and biological vulnerability: a study of life events and platelet MAO activity in depressed patients.

The present study investigated the possible relationship between platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity and life events. From the general hypothesis that the impact of life events should be seen against the background of an individual's vulnerability, it was assumed that low platelet MAO patients would need fewer life events to develop a psychopathological condition and that they would experience more negatively those events that occurred. Patients (n = 127) of both sexes suffering from various kinds of depressive disorders participated in the study. There were 39 unipolar patients, 11 bipo

The availability of confiding persons for depressed patients.

The availability of confiding persons both within and outside the household has been investigated in a series of 110 depressed patients and of 98 non-psychiatric controls. The depressive sample has been classified into diagnostic subgroups of unipolar, bipolar, reactive-neurotic and unspecified type of depression. The depressives reported lack of confidants to a significantly higher degree. The only difference among the diagnostic subgroups emerged for the bipolar patients who had about the same availability of a confiding relationship outside the household as the controls.

Discrimination of former depressed patients from healthy volunteers on the basis of stable personality traits assessed by means of KSP.

A total of 208 former depressed patients were investigated by means of the personality inventory KSP and compared to 75 healthy volunteers who had never had an affective episode. By means of discriminant analysis 81.3% of the subjects could be correctly classified as former depressed patients or healthy volunteers. When patients in the diagnostic subgroups, unipolars, bipolars, patients with neurotic-reactive depressions and patients with unspecified depressions were compared to healthy volunteers, 85.4%, 83.0%, 84.2% and 86.4% respectively could be correctly classified. Life events and depression. Part 2. Results in diagnostic subgroups, and in relation to the recurrence of depression.

Although there is evidence that the occurrence of stressful life events might be important for the onset and development of depression, it is still unclear whether differences occur in diagnostic subgroups of depressed patients, or in relation to type of episode, i.e., whether the first event or a relapse in a depression with a recurrent course. The present study has been carried out to investigate these issues more closely. Two hundred and six depressed patients have been classified into bipolar, unipolar, neurotic-reactive, and unspecified subgroups according to given definitions. The patien

Serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase in diagnostic subgroups of depressed patients and in relation to their personality characteristics.

Serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) levels were assessed in 150 depressed patients of both sexes, with a mean age of 44.0 +/- 12.3 (SD) years. Patients were divided into unipolars (n = 46), bipolars (n = 25), neurotic-reactive (n = 46) and unspecified (n = 38) i.e., those who did not fit into any of the previous categories. According to their status 38 patients were psychotic and 104 clearly nonpsychotic at the time of the DBH assessment. Personality characteristics were assessed for the same patients when they had markedly improved from their depression. In line with previous findings bipol
