Endorsement of Appearance-Based Societal Biases Differentiates Women With Current Anorexia Nervosa From Those in Recovery.

OBJECTIVE: Many people relapse following treatment for Anorexia nervosa (AN). Internalization of appearance-related societal biases, including weight stigma, idealization of thinness, and body self-objectification, is related to eating disorder (ED) onset and maintenance, but their association with AN recovery is unclear. METHOD: We recruited 425 women using Prolific: 136 with self-reported active AN, 143 who self-reported being recovered, and 146 controls with no ED history. They completed online measures of ED symptoms, internalized weight stigma, thin-ideal internalization, and self-object

Care approaches for people with longstanding eating disorders: a lived experience perspective on the need for recovery-fostering care.

People with longstanding eating disorders (EDs) are often conceptualised as 'treatment-resistant' when they are not currently benefitting from established recovery-focused treatments. This may encourage a shift from recovery-focused treatments to care approaches that for many individuals do not foster recovery. As a result, the present article offers an explicitly hope-holding and recovery-fostering care (RFC) approach that neither demands recovery nor abandons the possibility of recovery, whatever recovery may mean to the individual being cared for. RFC is guided by the following principles,

Connectivity-Guided Individualized iTBS of the Posterior Parietal Cortex in Enduring Anorexia Nervosa: Network-Level Target Engagement and Multimodal Response in a Single Case.

AIMS: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe, often enduring disorder with scarce biological treatments, largely unable to address its core implicit features: habit-like food restriction and body-experience disturbances. We report a single-case application of resting-state connectivity-guided intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) to the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), a hub for body representation, peripersonal space, and affordance-based action. METHODS: A 31-year-old woman with 12 years of treatment-resistant restricting AN, enrolled in an ongoing sham-controlled feasibility trial, underw

The role of a midwife during perinatal anorexia nervosa care: A narrative review.

Anorexia nervosa primarily affects women of reproductive age, with prevalence significantly increasing during pregnancy. Identifying optimal ways to support this population during the perinatal period is essential. This narrative review examines the role of midwives in perinatal care of women with anorexia nervosa, the challenges they encounter, and the effectiveness of midwifery-led care in this context. As part of this narrative review, a literature search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and PsycINFO. Reference lists of included studies were screened for addition

Surviving the Storm: A Qualitative Study of Caregivers' Challenges in Family-Based Treatment for Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Family-based treatment (FBT) is the recommended first-line outpatient treatment for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), but places substantial responsibility on parents/caregivers. Although caregiver burden in FBT is increasingly recognized internationally, in-depth qualitative work situated in the NZ service context is lacking. This study explored how caregivers experienced participating in FBT for adolescent AN in NZ. METHOD: Twelve caregivers participated in semi-structured interviews between May and July 2025. Interviews were analyzed within an interp

Cross-ancestry and cross-disorder transferability of polygenic risk scores for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Most genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been conducted in European populations, limiting the understanding of OCD genetics across populations. Here, we investigated the cross-ancestry and cross-disorder transferability of European-derived polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for OCD in the first East Asian OCD cohort. We performed a GWAS in 532 Korean OCD cases and 4376 controls, followed by PRS analyses using European GWASs for OCD and 10 psychiatric disorders. The European-derived OCD PRS was significantly associated with Korean OCD status (best-fit R

Development and early implementation of a brief 2-day multidisciplinary parent training group for paediatric ARFID: A feasibility and acceptability study.

OBJECTIVE: Many children with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) cannot access appropriate care, as existing individual and family treatments are scarce, long and costly. We developed a brief 2-day (12-h) multidisciplinary parent training group and assessed its feasibility and acceptability in routine care. METHOD: Single-arm implementation study in one tertiary centre. Parents of 18 children (5-14 years) with DSM-5 ARFID (17/18 sensory-based; non-French-speaking families excluded) attended two days three weeks apart. Guided by the RE-AIM framework, we assessed reach, feasibili

Tissue-specific insulin sensitivity in anorexia nervosa: A cross-sectional positron emission tomography (PET) study in female adults.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) has been linked to both impaired and improved whole-body insulin sensitivity, but tissue-specific metabolic alterations remain unexplored. To address this gap, we studied 12 female volunteers with recently diagnosed AN and 13 healthy, lean female controls in a cross-sectional design using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with the glucose analogue [18F]FDG tracer under hyperinsulinemic conditions. We show that tissue-specific glucose uptake during hyperinsulinemia was higher only in the duodenum of individuals with AN, but comparable in other tissues, possibly in

Neural correlates and sex hormonal associations of impaired feedback-learning in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa - a longitudinal fMRI study.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a somato-psychiatric disease that mostly begins in adolescence, involving endocrine changes including amenorrhea. It is difficult to treat as most patients have difficulties embracing change and thus, the disease often takes a chronic course. Underlying pathomechanisms including moderate neuropsychological deficits of learning and memory remain insufficiently understood. As learning and memory have been shown to be estradiol-dependent in healthy controls (HC), we conducted this assessment to investigate the impact of reduced estradiol in patients on verba

Zinc Deficiency and Cyclic Feeding Behavior-From Animal Models to Potential Human Implications.

This narrative review synthesizes 5 decades of evidence on zinc deficiency-induced cyclic feeding in animal models, examines the underlying neurobiological mechanisms-with emphasis on recent advances in gut-brain axis signaling-and critically evaluates whether analogous periodic appetite fluctuations may occur in zinc-deficient humans. Zinc deficiency induces a distinctive cyclic feeding pattern in rodents, with food intake oscillating at an approximately 3.5-day period, as demonstrated by cosinor analysis, yet the mechanistic basis and potential human relevance of this phenomenon remain incom

Exploring eating disorder voices: a qualitative study of individuals in recovery - Hearing ED's voice.

The eating disorder voice (EDV) has been increasingly recognised as implicated in the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). However, research has predominantly examined anorexia nervosa (AN), limiting understanding across other diagnoses. This study aimed to investigate the lived experiences of the EDV across EDs, including AN, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, among individuals identifying as being in recovery for at least 12 months. Twenty participants completed semi-structured interviews or an equivalent written survey. Using Reflexive Thematic Analysis within an

Considering Autism in Binge-Type Eating Disorders: Broadening Beyond an Anorexia Nervosa-Focused Model.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Research on Autism in eating disorders (EDs) has historically focused on anorexia nervosa (AN), with comparatively limited attention given to binge-type EDs such as bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED). This review summarises emerging evidence on Autism in binge-type EDs and highlights key clinical and research implications. RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging evidence suggests that Autism is over-represented in BN and BED, although prevalence appears lower than in AN and research remains methodologically limited. Recent studies suggest that affective and reward-relat

Stigma as a Multidimensional Construct in Anorexia Nervosa.

Eating disorders (EDs) contribute substantially to morbidity and mortality in the United States, with anorexia nervosa (AN) having the second-highest mortality rate among psychiatric disorders. Stigma towards individuals with AN remains a barrier to treatment and engagement. Public and clinician misperceptions that AN is self-inflicted may contribute to blame, punitive treatment and poorer recovery outcomes. This study aimed to clarify the concept of stigma in the context of AN and develop a working definition by examining its use across disciplines. The Walker and Avant (2019) concept analysi

Attention orienting and inhibitory control across anorexia nervosa types: an antisaccade eye-tracking study.

Patients with Anorexia Nervosa experience difficulties in processing emotional stimuli within social contexts, which may contribute to some clinical manifestations of the disorder. However, it remains unclear whether emotional processing differs between the restrictive and binge-eating/purging types of AN. The study aimed to examine attentional biases towards emotional stimuli in restrictive, binge-eating/purging Anorexia Nervosa patients, and healthy controls. The sample included 28 restrictive (mean age = 16.5 years) and 20 binge-eating/purging patients (mean age = 25.5), and 29 healthy cont

Effects of metabotropic 2/3-glutamate receptor agonism and antagonism on activity-based anorexia model in mice.

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder disproportionately found in female teens and young adults. It is often resistant to treatment, has a significant chance of relapse and is more lethal than other eating disorders, such as bulimia nervosa or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). There is no specific medication for the treatment of anorexia nervosa. Treatment consists of psychosocial means, psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and nutritional counseling. Medication is usually used for treating comorbidities such as anxiety or to decrease obsessive-compulsive tendencies. These medicat

Dissecting immune-psychiatric links: a Mendelian randomization analysis of antibody-mediated responses and mental health disorders.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between antibody-mediated immune responses and psychiatric disorders remains incompletely understood. We characterized the relationship between antibody-mediated immune responses and 10 typical psychiatric disorders to ultimately achieve prevention or treatment. METHODS: We obtained summary data from published genome-wide association studies, including those concerning antibody-mediated immune responses and 10 psychiatric disorders. Bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used to assess the potential causal relationships between genetica

Existing in a Battle Zone - The Lived Experience of Adolescents Subjected to Hospital Compulsory Care Due to Severe Anorexia Nervosa.

When untreated, anorexia nervosa is a life-threatening and disabling condition with the second highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders. In this study we undertook an in-depth exploration of adolescent girls' experience of inpatient compulsory care due to severe anorexia nervosa, aiming to better understand the complexity of the disorder and facilitate improvements in care standards. We used Lindseth and Norberg's phenomenological hermeneutic approach and conducted in-depth interviews with seven girls with a mean age of 15.3 years who had experienced inpatient psychiatric care in a

Momentary Temporal Associations Among Sleep Disturbances, Eating Disorder Behaviors, and Suicidal Ideation in Anorexia Nervosa Spectrum Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa spectrum disorders (ANSD) are associated with high chronicity and mortality, with suicidality representing one of the most common and clinically significant comorbidities. Sleep disturbances are prevalent in individuals with ANSD and have independently been linked to both eating disorder (ED) symptom severity and suicidal ideation (SI), yet their temporal role in maintaining ANSD symptoms and SI remains poorly understood. This study examined sleep disturbances as a potential shared, transdiagnostic mechanism contributing to daily fluctuations in ANSD symptoms and SI

Examining Behavioral Markers of Reward Processing Dysfunction in Individuals With Anorexia Nervosa and Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are common in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), including those who are weight-restored. Dysfunction in reward processing has been proposed as a mechanism linking AN to STBs; however, little research has interrogated putative reward links between these phenomena. The present study examined behavioral markers associated with STBs in weight-restored AN using two reward-related decision-making tasks. METHOD: Participants included individuals with weight-restored AN (n = 33) with STBs (AN+STB, n = 19) or without STBs (AN-only; n = 14) and he
