Identifying Eating Disorders in Adolescents and Adults Living With Higher Weight: An Updated Systematic Review of Questionnaire Diagnostic Accuracy.

OBJECTIVE: To update the evidence regarding the diagnostic accuracy of eating disorder (ED) questionnaires in adolescents and adults with higher weight. METHOD: Five databases were systematically searched from 2020 to November 2025 (CRD420251186115). Included studies reported on the diagnostic accuracy of self-report questionnaires against a clinical interview to identify EDs and disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) in adolescents and adults with higher weight. Narrative synthesis was conducted, and findings from new studies were synthesized alongside previously identified studies. RESULTS: Th

Evaluating the Feasibility, Acceptability, and Preliminary Effectiveness of Interprofessional Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa and Atypical Anorexia Nervosa: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT-E) is the leading outpatient treatment for eating disorders but is typically delivered by a single clinician and does not routinely incorporate interprofessional expertise. In broader healthcare settings, Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP), characterized by role clarity, shared values, structured communication, and teamwork, is associated with improved patient, clinician, and organizational outcomes. Interprofessional Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT-IE) adapts CBT-E by embedding IPCP through co-delivery by a mental healt

Atypical Anorexia Nervosa Developed in a Patient with Severe Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Following Sleeve Gastrectomy and Postoperative Treatment with Semaglutide and Tirzepatide.

We describe an unusual case of a 60-year-old Japanese woman who developed atypical anorexia nervosa (AN) after undergoing bariatric surgery and postoperative semaglutide and tirzepatide therapy. At 57 years of age, due to severe obesity with a body weight of 113 kg (BMI 47.0), she underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and semaglutide and tirzepatide were started one month after surgery. Three years post-surgery, her weight drastically decreased to 50.3 kg (BMI: 20.9). Her rapid weight reduction, intense fear of weight gain, obsession with her body image, and normal weight (BMI >18.5) led

An Invited Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Comparing Atypical Anorexia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Since the publication of our earlier systematic review (Walsh et al.), a substantial number of additional studies have examined the psychological and physical characteristics of atypical anorexia nervosa (AN) compared with AN and/or healthy controls. The purpose of the current study was to update and expand the prior systematic review and meta-analysis using newly available data. METHOD: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, including studies from the original review as well as studies published after July 17, 2022 (the final search date of the ori

Physiological and Cardiac Effects of Weight Loss in Adolescents With Atypical Anorexia Nervosa Versus Those Undergoing Bariatric Surgery: A Retrospective Comparative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) experience cardiac complications at rates comparable to typical anorexia nervosa, despite remaining within or above a normal weight range. The physiological mechanisms underlying this paradox remain poorly understood. This study is the first to compare cardiac outcomes between adolescents with AAN and those who underwent bariatric surgery, a population experiencing similarly rapid and substantial weight loss within a medically supervised context. METHODS: A retrospective study compared adolescents with AAN (n = 102, 82% female, mean

Examining the Characteristics of Adolescents Recruited to a Novel Digital Treatment for Eating Disorders: Baseline Assessment in an Open Feasibility Trial.

BACKGROUND: Digital interventions for eating disorders have the potential to increase access to care and broaden the range of treatment options for adolescents. However, little is known about the characteristics of those who seek these interventions. Identifying such characteristics will help ensure that these interventions meet the needs of the target population, highlight potentially underrepresented groups, and support clinicians in assessing clinical suitability for individual patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the characteristics of adolescents seeking digital treatment for

Microvascular Abnormalities in Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa: Nailfold Video Capillaroscopic Evidence at Acute and Remission States.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic malnutrition, hypothermia, and hormonal imbalance in anorexia nervosa (AN) may impair capillary structure and perfusion. This study aimed to describe the nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) findings in adolescents with AN and atypical AN (AAN), to assess their association with Raynaud's phenomenon (RP), and evaluate longitudinal capillary changes following medical remission. METHODS: We evaluated the NVC findings of 26 adolescents with AN, 24 with AAN and 9 with primary RP as a control group (12-18 years). Additionally, 23 patients with AN and AAN were reevaluated after achi

Exploring Comorbid Psychopathology as Predictors of Outcome and Drop-Out From Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa and Atypical Anorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E) has demonstrated effectiveness in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN); however, there is limited knowledge about factors that influence treatment outcome. The current study aimed to identify whether comorbid psychopathology predicted treatment response or drop-out in CBT-E for adolescents with AN and AAN in a real-world setting. METHOD: A prospective cohort of 62 young people with AN or AAN engaging in CBT-E (female = 96.8%, M age = 15.31 years, SD = 1.32, range 12-17) at a public community outpati

Consensus-based clinical and research recommendations for use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in the context of eating disorders: a modified Delphi study.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), initially developed for type 2 diabetes management and later expanded to obesity treatment, have shown preliminary efficacy in reducing binge eating episodes. However, the appetite-suppressing and weight-loss effects of GLP-1RAs raise concerns about misuse and potential exacerbation or emergence of eating disorders (EDs). Evidence remains limited and inconsistent, requiring structured, expert-informed guidance. Using a modified three-round Delphi method, a multidisciplinary panel of experts in diabetes, obesity and/or EDs, and individuals w

Measuring body checking and avoidance in adolescents: validation of a behavioral questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Body image distortion (BID) is central to eating disorder (ED) pathology and is closely linked to body dissatisfaction. While most questionnaires assess affective, cognitive, or perceptual components of body image, the behavioral component manifesting in body checking (BC) and body avoidance (BA) has received comparatively little attention. Given that EDs typically emerge during adolescence, validated measures of behavioral BID are particularly needed for this age group. The Body Checking and Avoidance Questionnaire (BCAQ) is the only instrument assessing both BC and BA, but it has

Characteristics of menstrual irregularities across eating disorder subtypes in postmenarcheal adolescents.

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to characterize menstrual irregularities in adolescents with eating disorder (ED) and assess their variation across diagnostic subtypes, clinical course, and clinical determinants. This retrospective study included postmenarcheal female adolescents with EDs and followed in an adolescent medicine clinic between 2015 and 2025. Demographic, anthropometric, clinical, and menstrual data at admission and during follow-up were extracted from medical records. The study included 491 adolescents: 178 (36.3%) with anorexia nervosa (AN), 184 (37.5%) with atypical AN (AAN), 76

Altered late semantic processing of food stimuli in female anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia nervosa patients.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) patients exhibit cognitive and neural disturbances during food processing, yet underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Our study investigated whether AN and Atypical AN (AAN) patients show altered neural, cognitive, and behavioral responses to high and low-calorie food stimuli, and whether these effects appear largely food-specific. METHODS: Seventeen AN/AAN, 17 HCs, and 17 overweight/obese females viewed high and low-calorie food stimuli, rated palatability (yes/no), and completed an emotional picture viewing task (IAPS) while high-density EEG was recorded.

TeenGrowth: Individualized Estimations of Weight-Related Risk and Recovery Metrics for Young People With Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: While weight restoration and/or stabilization is crucial for successful treatment and sustained recovery from restrictive eating disorders (EDs), it is often challenging to define an individual's expected healthy body weight. This paper introduces the TeenGrowth package and its web-based application, designed to calculate and forecast predicted body mass index (BMI) and weight across adolescence. METHOD: TeenGrowth includes functions for data cleaning, predicted BMI z-score and BMI calculations, and growth forecasting. The accompanying Shiny web application provides a user-friendly

Weight Stigma's Effects on Misdiagnosis of Eating Disorders Among Laypeople and Healthcare Professionals.

OBJECTIVE: There is limited research on weight bias in diagnosing eating disorders (EDs), particularly among healthcare professionals (HCPs). This is especially true for atypical anorexia nervosa, a diagnosis recently described in the DSM that includes people with anorexia nervosa symptoms who are not clinically underweight. METHOD: Using a within-subjects design, we assessed diagnosis, diagnostic confidence, and ED-related medical knowledge among a sample of lay people and medical professionals. Participants read three clinical vignettes (counterbalanced to avoid order effects) of a woman wi

Clinical Outcomes Among Adolescents Diagnosed With Anorexia Nervosa During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with a significant rise in the incidence of anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN), longer wait times and reduced opportunities for in-person medical services. How these changes affected clinical outcomes among adolescents newly diagnosed with AN/AAN remains largely unknown. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of standardized intake and follow-up data from a pediatric eating disorder program to compare clinical outcomes among adolescents newly diagnosed with AN/AAN during pre-pandemic (July/2017-December/2018) and p
