INTRODUCTION: Binge-type eating disorders, including bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), are associated with both shared and disorder-specific neurobiological mechanisms across brain, behavior, and physiology. A clearer distinction between shared mechanisms and disorder-specific alterations may advance our understanding of binge-type eating pathology.
METHODS: We applied a comprehensive multimodal machine learning framework to 110 participants (BN, BED, and age & weight matched controls), integrating task-based fMRI, intrinsic connectivity, voxel-based morphometry, neuropsyc

OBJECTIVE: Negative affect is a primary antecedent for binge eating (BE). Just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) prompt the use of therapy skills when at risk for maladaptive behaviors. JITAIs show promise for improving emotion regulation skill use and decreasing BE. Identifying momentary negative affect has relied on ecological momentary assessment (EMA). EMA surveys are typically delivered 4-6 times/day via smartphone and are self-report; accordingly, EMA is limited by temporal granularity, participant insight, and adherence. Wearable sensors which continuously, passively measure physi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI; formerly known as functional gastrointestinal disorders) are chronic gastrointestinal conditions with no objective biomarker. DGBI such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia are common in eating disorders (EDs) and may maintain ED behaviors including restriction and purging, but DGBI symptoms are not explicitly addressed in standard ED treatments. This review aims to summarize pharmacological, behavioral, and nutritional support interventions for DGBI that may be beneficial in managing DGBI symptoms in individuals with

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective treatment for binge eating disorder (BED) but is limited by modest efficacy and low reach of in-person delivery. Combining mindfulness training with CBT could enhance efficacy by targeting emotion dysregulation, a key factor in BED that CBT does not adequately target. Digital delivery can enhance the reach of treatment. Accordingly, we developed CBT-based Mindful Courage, a 16-session digital intervention combining CBT and mindfulness training for BED.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to evaluate trends, risk factors, and outcomes associated with anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa diagnoses during delivery hospitalizations in the United States.
STUDY DESIGN: The 2000 to 2022 National Inpatient Sample was used for this repeated-cross sectional analysis. Delivery hospitalizations of patients aged 15 to 54 with anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa diagnoses were identified. Temporal trends were analyzed with joinpoint regression reporting the average annual percent change (AAPC). The associations between anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa diagno

Eating disorders (EDs) and obesity have traditionally been conceptualized as distinct entities, yet accumulating evidence points to overlapping vulnerabilities spanning genetic, neurobiological, behavioral and psychological domains. Shared risk factors suggest convergent mechanisms, particularly in impulse control, reward processing, emotion regulation and body-image representation. In this scenario, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers a clinically accessible tool to examine cortical activity, although findings remain dispersed across heterogeneous studies. A systematic search

Food addiction (FA) is an emerging construct describing a compulsive and dysregulated pattern of food consumption that parallels mechanisms observed in substance-related addictions. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical correlates of FA in a sample of 141 Italian adult inpatients diagnosed with eating disorders (ED). Participants completed standardized self-report instruments assessing FA (YFAS 2.0), binge-eating behaviours (BES), ED-related psychopathology (EDI-3), body image distress (BUT), and general psychological symptoms (SCL-90) at admission (T0) and discharge (T1)

Eating disorders (EDs) are very frequent and are increasing since the Covid-19 pandemic. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidance and restriction disorders and their subsyndromic forms. EDs affect people of all ages, they generate somatic, psychiatric and social complications. Early diagnosis and appropriate care can considerably improve the prognosis. Unfortunately, these disorders steel underdiagnosed and the specialized care pathway available are not well known. After describing eating disorders, the article outlines elements for identification and in

BACKGROUND: The transition to adulthood poses particular challenges for healthcare systems. Eating disorders frequently occur during this developmental period and require continuity of care in order to achieve remission and to reduce the risk of relapses as well as long-term psychosocial and physical consequences.
AIM OF THE STUDY: Presentation of the specific challenges of transition in cases of eating disorders and derivation of recommendations for improving transition management.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Narrative review of the current state of research and a description of selected models o

Eating disorders configure a growing and complex public health issue which hinders implementing targeted policies. Global health policies emphasize tailored interventions for reducing eating disorders harms among vulnerable people. This systematic literature review and meta-synthesis interprets the synthesized findings from primary qualitative studies on the experience of family living with the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The study was conducted based on the SPIDER search strategy and PRISMA guidelines on nine databases: Academic Search Premier, CINAHL, LILACS, MEDLINE,

PURPOSE: A high number of people affected by eating disorders also show severe sleep disturbances, as well as circadian rhythm disruptions. However, research is relatively limited, often yielding conflicting results, especially when comparing clinical populations to healthy controls. Few interventions currently integrate sleep and circadian considerations into ED treatment. This review aims to synthesize recent evidence on sleep and circadian alterations in EDs and to identify research and clinical priorities.
METHODS: A systematic research through four academic databases was conducted during

Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), are severe mental health conditions affecting physical and psychosocial health. Structural gender inequality may shape the burden of EDs across sexes and regions. We analyzed Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 estimates to assess the relationship between gender inequality and ED burden in Europe. Years Lived with Disability (YLD) for AN and BN were extracted by sex and five-year age groups (10-39 years) from 1990 to 2023 across 35 countries. Gender inequality was measured using the Gender Inequality Index (GII).

OBJECTIVE: Weight suppression (WS), or the difference between one's highest past and current weights, may help maintain bulimia nervosa (BN) by altering reward response to food cues. This pilot study tested associations among WS, brain reward activation to food cues, and BN behaviours.
METHODS: Twenty women with BN were shown images of milkshake or tasteless control solution, followed by receipt of the corresponding beverage during fMRI. Regressions examined associations between brain activation in a priori regions of interest and WS and BN behaviours (i.e., objective binge-eating episodes, s

OBJECTIVE: Depressive symptoms are highly prevalent among people with eating disorders (ED). Although at the group level, depressive symptoms tend to improve alongside ED symptoms during treatment, many patients do not experience clinically meaningful reductions. Identifying at admission which patients are at risk for persistent depressive symptoms during ED treatment could support more personalized care and targeted treatment planning.
METHOD: We analyzed routinely collected electronic health record data from 1412 persons receiving inpatient or day hospital ED treatment. Two outcomes were ex

OBJECTIVE: Accurate assessment of physical activity supports a comprehensive understanding and treatment of obesity and eating disorders. Here, we assessed the concurrent validity of a questionnaire and accelerometry-based measurements in a clinical setting.
METHODS: From 2020 to 2022 a total of 23 patients from a psychosomatic clinic participated (21 with unspecified eating disorders, 2 with bulimia nervosa). During the 3rd to 4th week of the clinical stay patients completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form and wore an accelerometer-based multisensory device (Sens

Eating disorders (EDs) are characterized by persistent disturbance of eating behavior that impairs health or psychosocial functioning. ED can persist for decades resulting in substantial burdens and psychosocial impairments. An increased prevalence of anorexia nervosa was noted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite a worsening trend in risky eating behavior among US college students, only 22% of colleges report offering year-round ED screening opportunities with 45% offering ED screenings once per year or semester. Furthermore, 20% or less of those who screened positive, received treatment.

Eating disorders are lacking reliable biomarkers despite their severe psychiatric and medical burden. In this study, we examined plasma cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from patients with the restrictive (ANR), or binge-purge (ANBP) subtypes of anorexia nervosa, as well as from those with bulimia nervosa (BN), and controls, using the BIABooster electrophoresis method and shallow whole-genome sequencing to characterize cfDNA fragmentomics. While absolute cfDNA concentrations did not differ between groups, patients exhibited consistent qualitative alterations. Patients with BN showed increased cfDNA at the

IMPORTANCE: Digital interventions are increasingly promoted as scalable options for reducing the treatment gap in eating disorders, with the evidence base expanding in recent years to include new populations, delivery formats, and therapeutic approaches. A comprehensive, up-to-date synthesis is needed to clarify the current evidence for digital treatment delivery formats in eating disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of digital interventions for eating disorders with core and transdiagnostic symptom outcomes in the acute and longer-term phases.

OBJECTIVE: Executive function deficits are well documented in anorexia nervosa and relate to poorer treatment outcomes, but their clinical relevance in bulimia nervosa (BN) is less clear. This study investigated associations between neurocognition and treatment outcomes in adolescents with BN using complementary hypothesis-driven and data-driven approaches.
METHODS: Adolescents with BN (N = 82) enrolled in a randomised controlled treatment trial completed the Delis-Kaplan Executive Functioning System (D-KEFS) and the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE). A priori executive functions investigated

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) are serious illnesses which profoundly impact individuals and the people close to them. Despite robust evidence that early intervention improves clinical outcomes, help-seeking by individuals with EDs is low and long periods of untreated illness are common. Social support networks can facilitate help-seeking, although most research has focused on the experiences of parents supporting adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) to seek help and engage in treatment. The present study sought to explore the perspectives of a broadly defined group of 'close others' on
