ObjectiveThe developmental characteristics of adolescence make them more susceptible to eating disorders (ED) and substance use (SU). We aimed to compare the prevalence of SU in adolescents with ED and controls, and among ED subgroups; and to examine the relationship between SU and the medical severity of EDs.MethodsWe enrolled 510 adolescents with ED and 520 age- and sex-matched controls. Current SU (≥1 occasion in the past 30 days) was obtained from psychosocial interviews. Medical severity parameters were examined for anorexia nervosa (AN)/atypical AN (AAN) and bulimia nervosa (BN).ResultsT

We report the case of a 53-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes and bulimia nervosa who developed prolonged paralytic ileus after self-injecting tirzepatide 7.5 mg, 10 mg, and 15 mg on three consecutive days. Tirzepatide had been prescribed for diabetes treatment. However, the excessive self-administration resulted in paralytic ileus. No mechanical obstruction was found, and the condition resolved after three weeks of conservative therapy, including gastrointestinal decompression and prokinetic agents. Because tirzepatide has a long half-life, an overdose may cause the persistent suppression of

OBJECTIVE: To update the evidence regarding the diagnostic accuracy of eating disorder (ED) questionnaires in adolescents and adults with higher weight.
METHOD: Five databases were systematically searched from 2020 to November 2025 (CRD420251186115). Included studies reported on the diagnostic accuracy of self-report questionnaires against a clinical interview to identify EDs and disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) in adolescents and adults with higher weight. Narrative synthesis was conducted, and findings from new studies were synthesized alongside previously identified studies.
RESULTS: Th

Obesity and eating disorders (EDs) are major public health challenges associated with high morbidity and mortality. This systematic review evaluated the effects of immersive virtual reality (VR) interventions on clinical outcomes and biomarker-domain outcomes in obesity and EDs. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were searched through to April 2025. Eligible studies included immersive VR interventions targeting obesity or EDs and reporting at least one biomarker-domain outcome (anthropometric, physiological/autonomic, endocrine/metabolic, or neurocognitive/e

Many individuals with obesity meet criteria for an eating disorder such as binge-eating disorder (BED) or bulimia nervosa (BN). However, the impact of behaviorally based weight management interventions such as behavioral weight loss (BWL) on eating disorder symptoms for individuals diagnosed with BED or BN is unclear, with one possibility being that encouraging intentional weight loss could exacerbate symptoms of these disorders. Thus, the purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the impact of behavioral weight management interventions on eating disorder symptoms amo

BACKGROUND: Highly specialized consultation is a promising intervention for improving the treatment for mental disorders.
AIM: To model the impact of consultation for eating disorders (EDs).
METHOD: An explorative economic impact analysis was conducted in 2024-2025, utilizing data on patients who had been in treatment for more than two years within specialized secondary care for EDs as their primary diagnosis (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder). These data were used to model the effects of consultation for EDs. Sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the robust

In recent years there has been a proliferation of systematic reviews on the association between feeding and eating disorders and self-harm and suicidality. This study aims to conduct an umbrella review, providing a top-level synthesis of this information. A systematic search was performed using two databases (MEDLINE and APA PsycInfo), with inclusion criteria of studies identifying as systemic reviews, written in English, and researching the association between feeding and eating disorders and self-harm and/or suicidality. OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders affect 9% of the U.S. population and impose substantial health and economic burdens. This study aimed to examine trends in and focus areas of state legislative activity (2008-2024) with respect to eating disorders.
METHODS: State-level bills and enacted laws were identified by using the Westlaw legislative database and were categorized by type: authorization bills, appropriations bills, resolutions, and enacted laws. A hybrid inductive-deductive coding approach was used to classify policies by issue topic, including awareness, screening and referral, treatment serv

Background/Objective: Our current knowledge regarding ethnic/racial differences in the incidence of and risk factors for eating disorder onset is relatively limited. We examined whether the baseline prevalence and incidence of onset of any eating disorder over follow-up and the risk factors that predict future onset of any eating disorder differ for various ethnic/racial groups. Methods: Data were collected from females across a wide age range (N = 1952; White = 61%, Hispanic = 17%, Asian = 14%, Black = 5%, and Native American = 3%; M baseline age = 19.7, SD = 5.7; baseline age range: 13-64) w

OBJECTIVE: Research has highlighted co-occurrence and phenotypic overlap between autism and eating disorders (EDs), however the origin of this overlap is uncertain. The aim of this scoping review was to assess existing evidence on the role of acute illness effects and co-occurring mental health difficulties in the relationship between autism and EDs.
METHODS: The review was conducted following the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. Electronic databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, Embase and Web of Science) and grey literature (ProQuest Dissertation and Theses) were searched up until 11th January 20

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (ED), particularly anorexia nervosa (AN), share neurobiological characteristics with Parkinson's Disease (PD) (e.g., premorbid anxiety, dopaminergic dysfunction, harm avoidance, weight loss), suggesting common vulnerability. The present study built upon these observations, an AN patient's reported family history of Parkinson's Disease (RFHoPD), and AN:PD genetic correlation estimates, by ascertaining RFHoPD in families of individuals with PD.
METHOD: We ascertained RFHoPD among ED patients and community participants, and estimated relative risks (RRs) for AN, Bulim

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Eating disorders are serious pathologies with a strong negative impact on patients' quality of life and mortality. The gut microbiota was recently proposed as one of the potential factors involved in eating disorders. To gain a better understanding of the potential role of the gut microbiota in these diseases, we explored its composition in patients with all typical forms of eating disorders.
METHODS: We used 16S rRNA sequencing to compare the composition of the faecal microbiota of patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge-eating disorder, with that of healt

BACKGROUND: Patients receiving treatment for eating disorders often report dissatisfaction and negative treatment experiences, which may partly reflect the egosyntonic nature of these illnesses. This study aimed to examine different aspects of treatment satisfaction among patients receiving specialized eating disorder treatment, both inpatient and outpatient, and to investigate whether clinical outcomes were associated with treatment satisfaction.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 774 patients from Norway, adolecents and adults, all diagnosed with an ICD-10 eating disorder including anorexia n

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) and disordered eating (DE) are associated with elevated risk for suicide attempts, self-harm and suicidal ideation. Still, gender-specific knowledge about the frequency and association of EDs and DE with these outcomes among university students is limited. This study examines gender-stratified frequencies and associations between EDs and DE, and suicide attempts, self-harm and suicidal ideation.
METHODS: We pooled data from the students` Health and Wellbeing Study (SHoT) collected in 2018 and 2022, including Norwegian fulltime students aged 18-35 (N: 98 925)

Ultraprocessed food addiction (UPFA) is a complex and conceptually contested construct, uniting clinical and pathophysiological elements of eating disorders (EDs), behavioral addictions (BAs), substance use disorders (SUDs), and metabolic disorders (MDs). Despite increasing empirical interest, no formal diagnostic criteria or structured treatment recommendations currently exist. The case management of individuals presenting with UPFA raises important challenges for mental health specialists, as no therapeutic guidelines for this condition exist. This theoretical perspective proposes a stepped-

OBJECTIVE: As fundamental primary processes in maintaining the body's health, sleep and eating habits influence reciprocally, and this relationship is also modulated by circadian rhythms. Consistently, the literature reports various levels of alterations in sleep parameters and circadian preferences among individuals exhibiting dysfunctional eating behaviors. The present review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of case-control studies conducted to date on this topic.
METHOD: A systematic literature search was conducted to detect case-control studies investigating both subjective and obje

Standard treatments for adolescent eating disorders, such as family-based treatment (FBT), may be insufficient for patients presenting with severe emotion dysregulation and co-occurring pathologies. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets affect regulation and may therefore offer a viable alternative or adjunctive intervention. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of DBT and DBT-informed interventions, including those integrated with FBT, for adolescents with eating disorders characterized by binge eating episodes. A systematic literature search was conducted across four databases in a
