BACKGROUND: Digital interventions for eating disorders have the potential to increase access to care and broaden the range of treatment options for adolescents. However, little is known about the characteristics of those who seek these interventions. Identifying such characteristics will help ensure that these interventions meet the needs of the target population, highlight potentially underrepresented groups, and support clinicians in assessing clinical suitability for individual patients.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the characteristics of adolescents seeking digital treatment for

BACKGROUND: Only a minority of people with eating disorders receive evidence-based psychological treatment. This is especially true for those with recurrent binge eating because the shame that accompanies binge eating affects help seeking and there is a shortage of therapists to provide psychological treatments. Digital programme-led interventions have the potential to overcome both barriers.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the acceptability and effectiveness of a new digital programme-led intervention directly based on enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E), which is an empirically supp

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs), such as (atypical) Anorexia (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN), are difficult to treat, causing socioeconomic impediments. Although enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-E) is widely considered clinically effective, it may not be the most beneficial treatment for (atypical) AN and BN patients who do not show a rapid response after the first 4 weeks (8 sessions) of a CBT-E treatment. Alternatively, group schema therapy (GST) may be a valuable treatment for this ED population. Even though GST for EDs has yielded promising preliminary findings, the current body

The objective of the study was the realistic evaluation of the prevalence of eating disorders (ED) among Polish men who sought treatment through the National Health Fund (NFZ) in the years 2010-2017. According to ICD-10, four types of ED were analyzed: anorexia nervosa-AN (F50.0), atypical anorexia nervosa (F50.1), bulimia nervosa-BN (F50.2), and atypical bulimia nervosa (F50.3). The NFZ database was used. The ED groups were defined according to ICD-10 codes. Demographic data were collected from the web page of Statistics Poland (GUS). The annual prevalence of EDs was estimated, and the age gr

BACKGROUND Little has been reported regarding the epidemiology of eating disorders (EDs) in type 2 diabetes (T2DM). We examined the Polish National Health Fund-NFZ database estimates of all medical visits from 2008 to 2017 to determine the trend and the epidemiology of EDs in T2DM patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The NFZ database were used. We defined the T2DM group diagnosed with both T2DM and EDs according to the ICD-10 codes. Demographic data were collected from the webpage of Statistics Poland (GUS). The annual prevalence of EDs was estimated according to the T2DM diagnosis status, and the a

OBJECTIVE: In the treatment research literature on other psychological disorders, there is a move towards session-by-session symptom measurement. The necessary measures need to be brief, focused on core features since the last session, and readily available to clinicians. There is no measure in the eating disorders that meets those criteria. This research reports the development and validation of such a self-report questionnaire.
METHOD: The authors generated and refined a brief set of attitudinal and behavioral items. The resulting questionnaire (the ED-15) and an existing measure (Eating Di

A manual for a disorder oriented psychodynamic treatment of bulimia nevosa and atypical bulimia nervosa of female adolescents and young adults is presented. This manual is applied in a therapy project, which started in 2007. The work on conflicts and structural dysfunctions is meant to lead to the removal or alleviation of the symptoms and an improvement of eating behavior and body image. The bulimic symptoms are contextualized and focussed according to the conflicts and ego-structural deficits of the patients. Typical patterns of interpersonal relationships, transference, conflict, defence an

The reliability of the meanwhile widely used Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostics in childhood and adolescence (OPD-CA) is only rarely examined. By means of audiovisual recordings of OPD-CA-interviews with 39 adolescents in the context of a randomized-controlled psychotherapy study for the treatment female adolescents with bulimia nervosa and atypical bulimia nervosa the reliability of the axis conflict and the axis structure were examined. This was carried out by the calculation of Intraklassen-correlations of three raters. The rater agreements ranged from good to excellent, except for i

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for bulimic disorders has been established in research trials. This study examined whether that efficacy can be translated into effectiveness in routine clinical practice.
METHOD: Seventy-eight adult women with bulimic disorders (bulimia nervosa and atypical bulimia nervosa) undertook individual CBT, with few exclusion criteria and a treatment protocol based on evidence-based approaches, utilizing individualized formulations. Patients completed measures of eating behaviors, eating attitudes, and depression pre- and post-treatment.

Eating disorders are commonly considered diagnoses in young women who present with unexplained weight loss and vomiting. Our objective was to report the increased awareness of eating disorders and that it is likewise important to recognize that organic pathology (achalasia) can cause symptoms that may mimic an eating disorder and lead to misdiagnosis. Two case reports are presented and a review of the existing literature is provided. In the first patient, initial diagnosis of nonclassified eating disorder based on a pubertal conflict was made, and 3.5 years later diagnosis of primary achalasia

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to explore young people's experience of accessing and utilising a web-based cognitive behavioural intervention for bulimic disorders.
METHOD: Young people (N = 11) with bulimia nervosa or atypical bulimia nervosa completed a qualitative interview. Interviews were analysed and themes were identified.
RESULTS: Young people liked the programme for its accessibility, flexibility, support and information. Some participants used the intervention as a stepping stone to further treatment.
CONCLUSION: Web-based interventions have the potential to provide a

OBJECTIVE: Self-reported height and weight data are commonly reported within eating disorders research, and often used clinically. The aims of this study are to demonstrate the accuracy of self-reported height and weight among a group of women with eating disorders, and to determine whether that accuracy is associated with clinical diagnosis or levels of eating psychopathology.
METHOD: Sixty-four female patients (39 diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa or atypical Anorexia Nervosa and 25 with Bulimia Nervosa or atypical Bulimia Nervosa) were asked to self-report their height and weight. They then

OBJECTIVE: To validate the online questionnaire form of the Eating Disorders Examination (EDE-Q) against the interview version (EDE) in a clinic and community sample of adolescents with bulimia nervosa (BN) or atypical BN (eating disorder not otherwise specified with bulimic features - EDNOS-BN).
METHOD: Adolescents with BN (N=58) or EDNOS-BN (N=37) completed the EDE over the telephone and the EDE-Q online.
RESULTS: There were moderate to high correlations between the attitudinal scales. Eating was rated as more pathological on the EDE-Q than the EDE, except dietary restraint. As in research

The International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10) defines atypical bulimia nervosa (ABN) as an eating disorder that encompasses several different syndromes, including the DSM-IV binge eating disorder (BED). We investigated whether patients with BED can be differentiated clinically from patients with ABN who do not meet criteria for BED. Fifty-three obese patients were examined using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV and the ICD-10 criteria for eating disorders. All volunteers completed the Binge Eating Scale (BES), the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Symptom Che

OBJECTIVE/METHOD: The case notes of 111 women presenting consecutively to an outpatient eating disorders clinic with bulimia nervosa or atypical bulimia nervosa were reviewed for pretreatment factors that predicted dropout in a retrospective study. Dropping out was conceptualized as not just a patient characteristic but as a transaction between patient and therapist. Factors believed to influence this transaction included experiences of childhood trauma, severity of eating disorder characteristics and comorbid psychiatric symptoms, demographic characteristics, waiting times for assessment and

OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this study was to replicate the finding that experiences of childhood trauma have a dose-effect relationship with dropping out from psychotherapeutic treatment for bulimia nervosa. It also aimed to replicate logistic regression findings that parental break-up predicts dropping out.
METHOD: The cohort consisted of 114 women consecutively presenting to an outpatient eating disorders clinic with bulimia nervosa or atypical bulimia nervosa. Data were gathered using a retrospective, case-note approach and were analysed using logistic regression (LR). A correlation te

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a stepped care approach to the treatment of bulimia nervosa: a self-care manual followed, if necessary, by a course of attenuated cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT) in comparison with standard CBT.
METHOD: One hundred and ten patients, presenting at a tertiary referral centre with ICD-10 bulimia nervosa or atypical bulimia nervosa, were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions; a) a sequential treatment group: 8 weeks with a self-care manual followed by up to eight sessions of CBT (if still symptomatic) or b
