Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder disproportionately found in female teens and young adults. It is often resistant to treatment, has a significant chance of relapse and is more lethal than other eating disorders, such as bulimia nervosa or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). There is no specific medication for the treatment of anorexia nervosa. Treatment consists of psychosocial means, psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and nutritional counseling. Medication is usually used for treating comorbidities such as anxiety or to decrease obsessive-compulsive tendencies. These medicat

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Minimizing residual tree damage during mechanized forest operations is vital for sustainable forest management since this damage can affect stand structure, timber quality, and long-term forest health. Although various studies have examined tree damage factors, evidence remains fragmented across regions and systems. The review synthesizes the state of knowledge of residual tree damage during forest operations, identifying how operational, silvicultural, and human factors have been reported to influence damage characteristics and synthesize mitigation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Several versions of the Nine-Item ARFID Screen (NIAS) have been developed in recent years to adapt the questionnaire to different languages and clinical samples. An Italian version is still lacking. From the perspective of a highly specialized Eating Disorder Unit in Milano, ARFID's phenomenology may be mimicked by other peculiar dietary habits or other eating disorders. Screening for this pathological conduct is necessary to assess a correct treatment frame for potentially serious disordered feeding behavior.

Orthorexia nervosa refers to a pathological obsession with healthy eating, yet its classification, causes, and clinical relevance remain contested. This qualitative meta-synthesis explores the lived experiences of individuals with orthorexic behaviors to better understand the psychological, social, and cultural dynamics that sustain this condition. Drawing on thematic synthesis of 16 peer-reviewed, qualitative studies, three major themes emerged: (1) Origins and Motivations for Orthorexic Behavior, highlighting the role of perfectionism, identity, and sociocultural ideals; (2) The Orthorexic E

OBJECTIVE: Neurocognitive deficits are well-documented across psychiatric disorders and may indicate novel treatment targets. However, empirical data on the neurocognitive profile of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) are lacking. To address this gap, this study examined three core neurocognitive domains altered in other eating disorders-cognitive flexibility, delay discounting, and detail orientation-in adults with ARFID and healthy controls (HCs).
METHOD: Adults (18-45 years) with ARFID (n = 49) and HCs (n = 21) completed computerized tasks assessing cognitive flexibility (Ca

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a clinical condition characterized by rigid and inflexible rules about consuming healthy food, potentially leading to harmful consequences for physical and mental health and significant impairment in major life domains. Overlap or independence between ON and other clinical entities, like other eating disorders (EDs) or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), still needs clarification. Objectives: This study aims to examine the overlap versus independence of core symptoms of ON from these two classes of disorders using a network approach. Methods: A group of 422 universi

BACKGROUND: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a relatively recent diagnostic category within feeding and eating disorders and is increasingly recognized in pediatric populations. Although ARFID shares some clinical features with other eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), important differences in psychiatric comorbidity, sex distribution, and clinical severity have been suggested.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the clinical profiles of ARFID with those of AN and BN in children and adolescents, focusing

BACKGROUND: Autistic people are at an increased risk of psychiatric and somatic health conditions in young adulthood, but the influence of childhood somatic conditions on adult psychiatric conditions has not been examined. This study aimed to investigate whether childhood somatic conditions are associated with adult psychiatric conditions in autistic young adults.
METHODS: This retrospective, longitudinal, population-based cohort study design used data from linking nationwide Swedish registers. From the Medical Birth Register, we identified all individuals born in Sweden between Jan 1, 1985,

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is characterized by an avoidance or restriction of food intake due to a lack of interest in eating or foods, sensory sensitivities, and/or fear of adverse consequences, resulting in physical, medical, or psychosocial impairment. While previous studies in other eating disorders have found correlations between parental hostility, critical comments, and treatment outcomes, the ways that parents display their emotions and thoughts have not been evaluated in families of children with ARFID.
METHOD: This study coded parental emotions and

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

PURPOSE: To investigate the roles of activation of macrophages isolated from C3H/HeN and C3H/HeJ mice and stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and toll-like receptor 4-mediated signal transduction in the development of acute anterior uveitis.
METHODS: Establish animal models with acute anterior uveitis by intraperitoneal injection of vibrio cholera endotoxin into C3H/HeN mice (wild type) and C3H/HeJ mice (toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) gene defection type). Peritoneal macrophages were obtained from C3H/HeN and C3H/HeJ mice. Immunofluorescence staining was used to identify the F4/80+ positive

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore emotional functioning in individuals with varying levels of orthorexia nervosa (ON) symptoms. Given the established links between emotion dysregulation and other eating disorders (EDs), and the conceptualization of ON within the ED spectrum, this research sought to examine the relationships between ON symptomatology and emotion regulation strategies, alexithymia, and beliefs about emotions.
METHODS: A large sample (N = 562) completed self-report measures with high psychometric properties, assessing ON traits (E-DOS), emotion regulation strategies (DERS-SF

Health-threatening underweight and poor growth is a frequent consequence of Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and should be a priority for treatment in children and adolescents (young people, YP). Coexisting autism is more prevalent in YP with ARFID than in YP with other eating disorders. Treatment studies are still sparse for ARFID, and it is not known whether treatment response is lower in those with coexisting autism, as it is documented in other eating disorders. In this study we examined if family-based treatment for ARFID (FBT-ARFID) was associated with weight gain in und

The diagnostic criteria for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) have been the source of confusion since its introduction to the DSM in 2013. In the current state, ARFID is diagnosed based on impairment, with no requirement that a specific pattern of behavioral or cognitive/affective symptoms be present. In this paper, we make the case for more positive etiologically based criteria for ARFID wherein Criterion A defines the psychopathology of ARFID. We propose a framework for DSM criteria involving food avoidance that is maintained by beliefs/hedonic reactions that are temporally c

This commentary considers the contribution of three papers (Breiner et al., Matheson et al., and Palmer et al.) that explore very different approaches to the treatment of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Comparison is made with the development over time of psychological therapies for other eating disorders and how we need to be open to different possible approaches so that we can eventually find our way to the best treatment(s) in the field of ARFID. Following that, summaries of each paper are given, including consideration of their different methodologies, measures, samples,

BACKGROUND: Despite reports of high incidence and prevalence, relatively few studies have investigated outcomes for children and adolescents with binge eating disorder (BED) and loss of control (LOC) eating. This study aimed to scope the available literature systematically.
METHODS: A systematic scoping review methodology was implemented. Five databases (Medline, PsycInfo, Embase, CENTRAL and Scopus) were searched on the 23rd of August 2024 for relevant peer-reviewed journal articles and dissertations. No beginning time point was specified, and the end time point was chosen as the 23rd of Aug

PURPOSE: The association of night eating (NE) and NE syndrome (NES) with dysfunctional eating behaviors, mental health and quality-of-life outcomes has been little explored in the general population. The objective of this study was to explore this for dysfunctional eating behaviors: binge-eating, use of purging, dietary restriction, use of medication to control weight; mental health: anxiety/depression; and quality-of-life outcomes: mental and physical health-related quality of life (M/PHRQoL). NE captured whether in the past 3 months, the respondents had any episodes of waking from sleep and

Zickgraf and colleagues propose an elegant revised framework for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder that would recognize it as a diagnosis based on the presence of specific eating behaviors, and, importantly, allow for it to be diagnosed alongside other medical and psychiatric conditions, including other eating disorders. While likely to have good ecological validity, this radical proposal challenges the general conceptualization of ARFID as the eating disorder in which weight- and shape-concerns are not present. Here, we consider whether two diagnoses are indeed better than one, raisin

Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is increasingly recognized globally, yet its clinical presentation may vary across cultures. This commentary highlights the importance of considering cultural context in the assessment of ARFID. We begin by reflecting on a study by Presseller et al. which examines the utility of the nine-item ARFID screen (NIAS) in a large Swedish sample, finding that the NIAS alone may not adequately differentiate ARFID from eating disorders driven by shape/weight concerns. Building upon this, we broaden the discussion to include the potential comorbidity of A

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by extreme food restriction, an intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted body image, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Conventional treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy often prove inadequate, especially in severe cases, highlighting the need for novel therapeutic approaches. Recent research into psychedelics, such as psilocybin and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), offers promising avenues for treating anorexia nervosa by targeting its neurobiological and psychol
