Night eating syndrome in young adult women: prevalence and correlates.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the prevalence and clinical significance of night eating syndrome (NES) in a community cohort of Black and White women. METHOD: We assessed 682 Black and 659 White women for NES, eating disorders, and psychiatric symptomatology. RESULTS: The prevalence was 1.6% (22 of 1,341; Blacks [n = 20]; Whites [n = 2]). Comparisons between identified Black women and the remaining Black participants revealed no significant differences in obesity, psychiatric comorbidity, or self-reported psychiatric distress. Comorbidity with eating disorders as outlined in the 4th e

Eating disorders and emotional and physical well-being: associations between student self-reports of eating disorders and quality of life as measured by the SF-36.

OBJECTIVE: To assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in subjects with eating disorders in terms of eating disorder type and in relation to self-reports of longstanding illness, depression and self-harming behaviours. METHOD: Data on eating disorder history, SF-36 health status, longstanding illness, and self-reported frequencies of depression, self-harming behaviour, and suicidal thoughts or acts were collected during 1996 as part of a UK postal survey of students' health. Completed questionnaires were returned by 1439 of 3750 students (response rate 42%). RESULTS: Eighty-three respon

Seasonally bound ovopathy versus "temperature at conception" as cause for anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: A preponderance of births between April and June in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and other eating disorders (EDs) has recently been explained by a higher environmental temperature at conception. This hypothesis, however, does not explain some other irregularities in the month of birth distribution in contrast to the seasonal preovulatory overripeness ovopathy (SPrOO) and seasonal optimally ripened oocytes (SOptRO) hypotheses. METHOD: The month of birth distribution of 408 patients with EDs from Southeast England and of 199 patients from Australia has been reassessed in relat

Beliefs of women concerning the severity and prevalence of bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined attitudes towards eating-disordered behaviour among women in the general population. METHODS: A vignette describing a fictional person meeting diagnostic criteria for bulimia nervosa (BN) was presented to a community sample of women aged 18-45. Respondents (n = 208) were asked a series of questions concerning the severity and prevalence of the problem described. RESULTS: Most respondents viewed BN as a distressing condition whose sufferers are deserving of sympathy. However, more than one-third of respondents had at some stage believed that it 'might not

[Pathological overeating--an overview].

An eating disorder apart from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa is "binge eating disorder" (BED): eating in a short period of time a large quantity of food and a feeling of lack of control over food intake. There is also an atypical rest category, "eating disorders not otherwise specified" (EDNOS). Diagnostic criteria for BED and EDNOS are incomplete, particularly with respect to the definition of "bingeing" relative to bulimia nervosa. More restrictive criteria for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa skew the diagnostic distribution towards BED and EDNOS, though the total prevalence of ea

Successful multidisciplinary treatment in an adolescent case of rumination.

Rumination is a rare and complex disorder to treat. It involves repeated regurgitation, rechewing and reswallowing of food and occurs mainly among infants and mentally retarded children. Among adolescents and adults it is rather rare, but still might cause significant sequelae (depression, other eating disorders and social problems). We provide a detailed psychodynamic formulation in a non-retarded adolescent with rumination (over a four year period). A multidisciplinary approach involving individual insight-oriented psychotherapy, group therapy, pharmacological therapy and a nutritional inter

Patients with eating disorders. A high-risk group for fractures.

PURPOSE: To analyze fracture risk and bone mineral density in patients with eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders). DESIGN: Clinical overview. FINDINGS: Bone mineral density is decreased and fracture risk increased in patients with anorexia nervosa. In patients with bulimia nervosa, bone mineral is only marginally decreased and fracture risk marginally increased. In patients with other eating disorders (eating disorders not otherwise specified), bone mineral density is decreased and fracture risk increased. CONCLUSIONS: Fracture risk is increased in

Functional neuroimaging: a new generation of human brain studies in obesity research.

Obesity is predominantly caused by overeating, an abnormal behaviour for which there is no unequivocal neurophysiological explanation. Functional neuroimaging techniques, such as positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have recently emerged as new tools to search for regions of the brain that are involved in the regulation of eating behaviours and those that are involved in the pathophysiology of obesity. Using these techniques, a limited number of studies have provided the first in vivo images of the human hypothalamic response to nutritional stimu

Health and fitness series--5. Managing anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders.

At a time when obesity is a major public health concern, society paradoxically prefers thinness. This, along with the increase in dieting seen over recent years, has inevitably been linked to a rise in the incidence of eating disorders. This article describes the features and complications of eating disorders and gives advice on how these disorders can be identified and managed.

RhoA is associated with invasion and lymph node metastasis in upper urinary tract cancer.

Plasmodium falciparum infection during pregnancy is strongly associated with maternal anaemia and low birth weight, contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy with sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) has been one of the most effective approaches to reduce the burden of malaria during pregnancy in Africa. IPTp-SP is based on administering >or=2 treatment doses of sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine to pregnant women at predefined intervals after quickening (around 18-20 weeks). Randomised, controlled trials have demonstrated d

Mortality in concurrent type 1 diabetes and anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies in this field report early occurrence of diabetic complications, but excess mortality, though expectable, has not been reported. We combined information from earlier studies to estimate the mortality for this group of patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The observed mortality is analyzed using crude mortality rate (a percentage), standardized mortality ratio (SMR), incidence rate ratio, risk difference, and survival analysis. RESULTS: After approximately 10 years of follow-up, 13 of 510 females with type 1 diabetes, 43 of 658 females with anorexia nervosa (AN),

Pattern of birth in anorexia nervosa. I: Early-onset cases in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggest that adults with anorexia nervosa are more likely to be born in spring and early summer. This study examines whether this pattern of birth is true of early-onset anorexia nervosa, and whether there is a relationship between environmental temperature at assumed time of conception and a later diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. METHOD: The population were children and adolescents with diagnoses of anorexia nervosa (N = 259) or "other eating disorders" (N = 149). Distribution of births across the year was compared between groups and relative to standard population

Fractures in patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders--a nationwide register study.

OBJECTIVE: To study fracture risk in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS). METHOD: Cohort study including all Danes diagnosed with AN (n = 2,149), BN (n = 1,294), or EDNOS (n = 942) between 1977 and 1998. Each patient was compared with three randomly drawn age- and gender-matched control subjects. RESULTS: Fracture risk was increased in AN after diagnosis compared to controls (incidence rate ratio: 1.98, 95% CI: 1.60-2.44), but not before. The increased fracture risk persisted more than 10 years after diagnosis. A sign

Can you ever be too old to be too thin? Anorexia nervosa in a 92-year-old woman.

UNLABELLED: Anorexia nervosa is a common psychiatric condition that most often affects young adults. If left untreated, it can have significant morbidity and mortality. METHODS AND DISCUSSION: In this report, we describe a woman first diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at age 92 and we discuss the relevant diagnostic and treatment-related issues. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the need to heighten diagnostic sensitivity for this and other eating disorders at any age.

Is physical illness a risk factor for eating disorders in children and adolescents? A preliminary investigation.

This study investigates the correlation between early-onset eating disorders and past history of physical illness. Subjects for this study were children and adolescents aged between 7 and 19 years, and were divided into two groups: those with anorexia nervosa (n=62) and those with "other eating disorders" (n=28). Data on medical history were obtained retrospectively from the patient's files and coded by a consultant psychiatrist. There was no significant difference between the two groups in relation to a history of prior physical illness. However, those with anorexia nervosa were significantly

Perception of parental acceptance in women with binge eating disorder.

The authors contribute to the validating literature for binge eating disorder (BED) by examining perceptions of parents and satisfaction with life among obese women with and without BED. Participants were female patients, recruited through a private medical clinic, who were assigned to groups on the basis of body mass index (BMI) and scores on the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns (QEWP; R. L. Spitzer et al., 1992). Groups consisted of (a) obese women with BED (n = 32), (b) obese women who had no eating disorders (n = 51), and (c) nonobese women with no eating disorders (n = 30). All

Season of birth and bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies suggest season of birth variation in eating disorders akin to those of psychoses. We studied season of birth variation in bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Season of birth variation in 935 patients was examined after adjustment for population trends. Variation was also examined for subgroups by age and previous anorexia nervosa. RESULTS: Season of birth did not differ significantly from population norms among bulimics (p >.30), contrasting with studies of other eating disorders. With a history of anorexia nervosa (n = 227), peak season of birth was in March (p <.05). This

Structural organization and mutational analysis of the human uncoupling protein-2 (hUCP2) gene.

Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are mitochondrial membrane transporters which are involved in dissipating the proton electrochemical gradient thereby releasing stored energy as heat. This implies a major role of UCPs in energy metabolism and thermogenesis which when deregulated are key risk factors for the development of obesity and other eating disorders. From the three different human UCPs identified so far by gene cloning both UCP2 and UCP3 were mapped in close proximity (75-150 kb) to regions of human chromosome 11 (11q13) that have been linked to obesity and hyperinsulinaemia. At the amino aci
