Genomic organization and mutational analysis of the human UCP2 gene, a prime candidate gene for human obesity.

Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are mitochondrial membrane transporters which are involved in dissipating the proton electrochemical gradient thereby releasing stored energy as heat. This implies a major role of UCPs in energy metabolism and thermogenesis which when deregulated are key risk factors for the development of obesity and other eating disorders. Recent studies have shown that the sympathetic nervous system, via norepinephrine (beta-adrenoceptors) and cAMP, as well as thyroid hormones and PPAR gamma ligands seem to be major regulators of UCP expression. From the three different UCPs ident

Eating disorders and psychiatric disorders in the first-degree relatives of obese probands with binge eating disorder and obese non-binge eating disorder controls.

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of the present study were to examine the possibility of a familial tendency for binge eating disorder (BED) among the obese, to clarify the relationship between BED and other eating disorders, and to test the relationship between BED and other psychiatric disorders. METHOD: We studied 32 female BED outpatients and 23 obese females without BED. A possible history of eating disorders was assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R-Eating Disorders section administered by telephone interview. Family history information for other psychiatric disorders wa

Lead concentrations in tibial and calcaneal bone in relation to the history of occupational lead exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Providing local consultant-delivered hospital services in remote and island communities in the United Kingdom is increasingly problematic due to difficulties with recruitment and retention of staff, statutory restrictions to hours worked by health professionals and the expectation each clinician must manage an externally defined volume of cases to maintain clinical standards. This article describes a before-and-after evaluation of a novel method of providing consultant support for acute internal medicine to an island grouping off the Scottish coast. Under the scheme, local GPs pr

Prader-Willi Syndrome: Genetics and Behavior.

Since its inception, the John F. Kennedy Center has attempted to overcome developmental problems, which create restrictive barriers to the participation of individuals with specific disabilities in our broader society. Some of Nicholas Hobbs's earliest efforts involved developing strategies for preventing children's emotional and behavior problems, which interfered with their later full participation in society. Other investigators in the Kennedy Center explored ways of reducing dysfunctional repetitive movement problems and self-injury commonly associated with autism and severe mental retarda

[Measuring the development of eating disorders in a group of patients with the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI)].

The Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI I) has been applied to four groups of patients with Eating Disorders (ED): Anorexic Bulimic Subtype (AB N = 22), Anorexic Restrictive Subtype (AR N = 36); Bulimic (B N = 51) and Other Eating Disorders (OED N = 15), according to the DSM III-R criteria. We have also applied the Eating Attitude Test (EAT-40), the Beck Depression Inventory (13 items), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. During their hospital care, the patients have been treated by cognitive-behavioural therapy. The order or decreasing total scores in EDI a

[The nocturnal eating syndrome (2 case reports and polysomnography)].

The nocturnal eating syndrome (NES) is a nocturnal sleep disorder caused by repeated awakening and the inability to fall a sleep again unless the patient ingests some food or drinks something. In children the NES is frequent, in adults rather rare and may be associated with various pathological conditions. The latter include in particular somnabulism, periodic movements of the lower extremities, narcolepsy, chronic triazolam intoxication, probably anorexia nervosa, and other eating disorders. The authors submit two case-histories of middle aged women (30 and 37 years old) without disturbances

Normal gastric antral myoelectrical activity in early onset anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia, epigastric discomfort, nausea, and vomiting may result from disordered gastric motility and emptying. These features have been found in many adults with anorexia nervosa, but have never been investigated in early onset anorexia nervosa. In 14 patients with early onset anorexia nervosa (eight of whom had upper gastrointestinal tract symptoms), six children with other eating disorders, four children with non-ulcer dyspepsia, and 10 controls matched for age and sex, the non-invasive technique of surface electrogastrography was used to measure fasting and postprandial gastric antral elec

Television, Obesity, and Eating Disorders.

Two national survey from the early 1960s indicate that the prevalence of obesity is directly related to the amount of time spent in viewing television in young people aged 6 to 17 years. The author discusses the mechanisms by which television affects obesity and other eating disorders.

Diagnosis and clinical features of borderline personality disorder in the east and west: a preliminary report.

In the first clinical study of the borderline personality disorder (BPD) in Asia, the Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines (DIB) was performed on 85 female outpatients aged 18 to 30 years in Japan. BPD was diagnosed in 32 (38%) of these patients. The International Classification of Diseases-9 (ICD-9) diagnoses made at the initial examination of the DIB-identified BPD patients were, in order of frequency, neurotic disorders, anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders, and manic-depressive psychoses. The DSM-III axis I diagnoses of the DIB-identified BPD patients were affective disorders in 63%

Hypnotizability in bulimic patients and controls. A pilot study.

Various studies have indicated that bulimics are more easily hypnotized and dissociate more readily than control groups and patients with other eating disorders. A comparison is reported of 15 inpatients with bulimia nervosa (DSM III-R) with 15 subjects in a control group comparable in age and education. The instrument used was the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility/Form A (HSGHS:A), which includes 12 standardized test suggestions. The results show that bulimics have higher scores in hypnotizability than the control group. A method study (comparison of self-evaluation with a video

Osteoporosis in women with eating disorders: comparison of physical parameters, exercise, and menstrual status with SPA and DPA evaluation.

Osteoporosis has been reported in anorexia nervosa (AN), but not in other eating disorders. Thirty-three patients, 8 AN, 17 bulimia nervosa (BN), and 8 eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS), were evaluated by bone densitometry (radius, spine, femur) to determine the prevalence and distribution of osteoporosis and the role of physical parameters, exercise and estrogen. All three diagnostic subgroups had evidence of decreased bone density, worst in the EDNOS subgroup and least in the BN subgroup. The most affected site was the femur, least the spine; the radius was intermediate. Age, b

Differential diagnosis and pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa is a disease of increasing frequency with serious medical and psychological consequences. The presentation is one of significant weight loss. The initial assessment of such a patient must differentiate between an underlying systemic medical illness and an eating disorder. This paper will review the more common medical conditions causing weight loss and their distinguishing characteristics, including malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease, infections and metabolic disorders. Once an organic disease is ruled out, anorexia nervosa must then be differentiated from other eating dis

Psychophysiological studies of eating disorders by means of visual evoked responses.

The psychic conditions of 14 patients with eating disorders were examined psychophysiologically. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and vertex potentials (V-potentials) as visual evoked responses (VERs) were recorded simultaneously at rest and during hyperventilation. The correlation between manifest anxiety measured by the MAS test and the increased amplitudes of VERs during hyperventilation was examined. The results showed that the psychic conditions of the typical anorexia nervosa patients were similar to a state of alexithymia, as they showed less manifest anxiety. The amplitudes of the VEPs
