Low quality of life in binge eating disorder compared to healthy controls.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with binge eating disorder (BED) tend to report a lower quality of life (QoL) than patients with other eating disorders. However, most research on QoL in eating disorders include generic rather than disease-specific measures. Depression and obesity are frequent comorbid conditions in patients with BED affecting QoL. In the present study, we aimed to assess disease-specific QoL in BED and to investigate the impact of obesity and depression. METHODS: Adult patients who met the DSM-5 criteria for BED (N = 98) were recruited from a newly established specialised online treat

Shifting age of child eating disorder hospitalizations during the Covid-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: We studied the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on child eating disorder hospitalizations in Quebec, Canada. Quebec had one of the strictest lockdown measures targeting young people in North America. METHODS: We analyzed eating disorder hospitalizations in children aged 10-19 years before and during the pandemic. We used interrupted time series regression to assess trends in the monthly number of hospitalizations for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders before the pandemic (April 2006 to February 2020), and during the first (March to August 2020) and second

Polysomnography findings in sleep-related eating disorder: a systematic review and case report.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related eating disorder (SRED) consists of recurrent episodes of uncontrolled, involuntary eating and drinking 1-3 h after falling asleep with partial or full unconsciousness. This condition is diagnosed based on interviews with the patients affected and the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders. However, polysomnography (PSG) is not necessary to confirm this disease. This systematic review aims to evaluate the findings of PSG in SRED patients. METHODS: For this systematic review, PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched in Febr

Prevalence, Characteristics, and Correlates of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder among Adult Respondents to the National Eating Disorders Association Online Screen: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a serious, albeit under-researched, feeding or eating disorder. This exploratory study utilized data from adult respondents to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) online eating disorder screen to validate items assessing the presence of ARFID and examine the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and correlates of a positive ARFID screen compared to other probable eating disorder/risk categories. METHODS: Among 47,705 adult screen respondents between January 2022 and January 2023, the prevalence of a positive ARFID s

Too healthy for their own good: orthorexia nervosa and compulsive exercise in the community.

BACKGROUND: The similarities and differences between orthorexia nervosa symptoms (ONs) and the symptoms and correlates of eating disorders listed in the DSM-5 need to be elucidated. ONs were examined in a volunteer community sample in conjunction with compulsive exercise, disordered eating, as well as emotional and behavioral correlates of eating disorders. METHODS: Participants were 561 adult volunteers (93 men, 17.09%) aged 19-72 (M = 32.7 ± 11), recruited via social media networks. Participants self-reported on the following measures online: Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale, Compulsive Exercise

A diagnostic subgroup comparison of health care utilization patterns in individuals with eating disorders diagnosed in childhood and/or adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined a 2-year period after diagnosis of an eating disorder to compare health care utilization in diagnostic subgroups including: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge-eating disorder (BED), avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other specified eating disorders (Other). METHOD: We conducted a retrospective study of children diagnosed with AN (n = 674), BN (n = 230), BED (n = 59), ARFID (n = 171), and Other (n = 315). We used a general population cohort for comparison, matched 5:1 to the diagnostic subgroups on sex and birth date. We then

A Patient Diagnosed with Bulimia Reports to the Dental Office Seeking Cosmetic Dental Work.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a serious psychiatric illness that typically occurs in adolescents and young adults. It is characterized by recurring episodes of consuming large amounts of food with an inappropriate compensatory behavior of purging to prevent weight gain. The purging behavior results in oral manifestations such as dental erosion, dental caries, sialadenosis, and oral mucosal trauma. Medical complications include electrolyte imbalances, esophageal rupture, and renal and cardiovascular failure. Treatment of BN involves psychosocial and psychopharmacologic approaches. Dentists are in a u

Anticipatory and consummatory pleasure in avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests that individuals with eating disorders (EDs) report elevated anhedonia, or loss of pleasure. Although individuals with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) often express that they do not look forward to eating, it is unclear whether they experience lower pleasure than those without EDs. Thus, identifying whether individuals with ARFID experience anhedonia may yield important insights that inform clinical conceptualization and treatment. METHODS: A sample of 71 participants ages 10-23 with full and subthreshold ARFID and 33 healthy controls (HC

Association of participants who screened positive for night eating syndrome with physical health, sleep problems, and weight status in an Australian adult population.

BACKGROUND: Night eating syndrome (NES) is a unique eating disorder characterised by evening hyperphagia and nocturnal ingestions which cause significant distress and/or impairment in functioning. Despite the growing literature, NES remains poorly understood and under diagnosed. As such, this study aims to compare the prevalence of physical health conditions in participants with NES when compared to participants without an eating disorder (ED) and participants with other eating disorders (including anorexia nervosa (AN), binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN)) in a general popula
