Baseline Predictors of Adherence in a Randomised Controlled Trial of a New Group Psychological Intervention for People with Recurrent Binge Eating Episodes Associated to Overweight or Obesity.

PURPOSE: Understanding the high rate of treatment adherence in trials of people with eating disorders is important as it can compromise the quality of the trials. In clinical practice, it may also contribute to illness chronicity, relapse, and costs. Thus, we investigated factors associated with adherence to a new treatment HAPIFED, which integrates cognitive behavioural therapy having extended sessions with body weight loss therapy compared to cognitive behavioural therapy with extended sessions alone, for individuals with Bulimia Nervosa or Binge Eating Disorder or other eating disorders com

Impulsivity and compulsivity in binge eating disorder: A systematic review of behavioral studies.

BACKGROUND: Binge eating disorder (BED) often includes impulsive and compulsive behaviors related to eating behavior and food. Impulsivity and compulsivity generally may contribute to the etiology and maintenance of multiple psychiatric disorders including BED. This review aimed to identify and synthesize available behavioral studies of impulsivity and compulsivity among individuals with BED. METHOD: A systematic search was performed focusing on BED and specific facets of impulsivity (rapid response and choice) and compulsivity (set-shifting, cognitive flexibility, and/or habit learning). All

Oral manifestations of eating disorders in adolescent patients. A review.

AIM: Eating disorders (ED) are a group of psychopathological disorders that affect the patient's relationship with food and his own body and that are manifested mainly in adolescence and in young-adult age. ED include anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and other eating disorders as classified in the DMS-V. ED can result in several oral and dental manifestations that often occur in the early stages of ED and may allow early detection. The aim of the study is to describe the different oral and dental manifestations in patients with ED in order to offer a classification for their identif

Relationship between Psychosocial Impairment, Food Choice Motives, and Orthorexic Behaviors among Polish Adults.

Orthorexic behaviors correlate not only with health motives when choosing food but may also coexist with psychosocial impairment. The aim of this study was to assess the motives of food choice and psychosocial impairment among adults with orthorexic behaviors through the use of ORTO-15 and ORTO-7. The data for the study were collected from a sample of 1007 Polish adults through a cross-sectional quantitative survey conducted in 2019. The respondents were asked to complete the ORTO-15 questionnaire, the Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ), and the Clinical Impairment Assessment (CIA). Orthorexic be

Familial co-aggregation of schizophrenia and eating disorders in Sweden and Denmark.

Eating disorders and schizophrenia are both moderately to highly heritable and share significant genetic risk despite distinct diagnostic criteria. Large-scale family studies on the co-aggregation of these disorders are lacking. Thus, we aimed to estimate the co-occurrence and familial co-aggregation of these disorders within the entire Swedish and Danish population. The proband cohort consisted of individuals born in Sweden (1977-2003) and Denmark (1984-2006) and still residing in their respective country at age six (NSweden = 2,535,191, NDenmark = 1,382,367). Probands were linked to their bi

Chew and Spit (CHSP): An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).

Chew and Spit (CHSP) is a prevalent disordered eating symptom and has been thought to be associated with a number of adverse effects. In the current study, 18 participants (>90% female, aged between 18 and 51) took part in answering questions about their experiences, struggles, concerns, methods of coping, and personal meaning of CHSP and how it has impacted their lives. Data collection and analysis were conducted in accordance with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology. Findings revealed 7 primary themes of CHSP, which highlighted that CHSP may be: (1) associated with neg

What have antidepressants been tested for? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Antidepressants are much used and have been tested for many conditions. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the type of diagnoses in placebo-controlled trials apart from depression and anxiety. METHODS: This was a systematic review. RESULTS: We downloaded 5471 records from PubMed and excluded 3017 that contained depression or anxiety. After exclusion of non-eligible studies, meta-analyses and reviews, and records that were unclear, 1273 records remained. We counted 214 unique diagnoses, of which the most common were abuse of drugs or substances (227 records), pain or neuropathy (170), obe

Risk of eating disorders in international adoptees: a cohort study using Swedish national population registers.

AIMS: Compared to the general population, adoptees are more often referred to specialist psychiatric treatment, exhibit increased risk of suicide and display more symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity-disorder. However, little is known about the impact of being an adoptee on the risk of developing an eating disorder. The aim of the present study was to assess whether international adoptees have a higher risk for eating disorders than native Swedes. METHODS: In the present retrospective cohort study, data from the Swedish total population registers on individuals born between 1979 and 20

Alexithymia may explain the relationship between autistic traits and eating disorder psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Autistic people are disproportionately vulnerable to anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders (ED), and within the general population, autistic traits correlate with ED psychopathology. A putative mechanism which may underpin this heightened risk is alexithymia, a difficulty identifying and describing emotional states which is observed in both autism and ED. In two experiments with independent non-clinical samples, we explored whether alexithymia might mediate the heightened risk of eating psychopathology in individuals high in autistic traits. METHODS: Our first experiment use

Perceived need for treatment associated with orthorexia nervosa symptoms.

Orthorexia Nervosa is characterised by a pathological fixation on food purity and nutrition, coupled with a severely restricted diet and avoidance of food believed to be unhealthy. Little is known about the risk factors associated with the condition or if the condition should be treated in a similar way to other eating disorders or whether distinct interventions are required. This study aimed to identify (1) putative variables of the need for treatment in those with orthorexia symptomology and (2) assess whether comorbid psychological symptomologies were associated with orthorexia nervosa. Eating disorders and the risk of esophageal and stomach cancers-A nationwide, population-based cohort study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown elevated cancer risk in anorexia nervosa but the literature on other eating disorders (EDs) is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the association between all EDs and esophageal, stomach, and other cancers. METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort design, based on a two-million randomized longitudinal health insurance dataset, a sub-dataset of Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. From all the potential participants aged 20 years or more, a total of 6,628 participants were enrolled, including 1,657 patients with EDs, with sex-, age-,

Food addiction and psychiatric comorbidities: a review of current evidence.

BACKGROUND: Food addiction (FA) is characterised by the consumption of appetible foods and by addictive psychological and behavioural symptoms such as cravings, tolerance, limited control of substance intake and withdrawal symptoms. Despite previous research on FA has been hindered by the lack of a formal definition for this condition, recent global trends have stirred the interest of the scientific community towards a proper classification and construct of FA. More specifically, recent studies have pointed towards shared defective neurobiological mechanisms as well as frequent comorbidities b

Restrictive eating across a spectrum from healthy to unhealthy: behavioral and neural mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Restriction of food intake is a central feature of anorexia nervosa (AN) and other eating disorders, yet also occurs in the absence of psychopathology. The neural mechanisms of restrictive eating in health and disease are unclear. METHODS: This study examined behavioral and neural mechanisms associated with restrictive eating among individuals with and without eating disorders. Dietary restriction was examined in four groups of women (n = 110): healthy controls, dieting healthy controls, patients with subthreshold (non-low weight) AN, and patients with AN. A Food Choice Task was a

Psychometric evaluation of the Eating Disorders in Youth-Questionnaire when used in adults: Prevalence estimates for symptoms of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and population norms.

OBJECTIVE: Restrictive eating behaviors occur across ages, but little is known about symptoms of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), especially in adults. This study sought to examine the prevalence of symptoms of ARFID in the adult population, providing a psychometric evaluation of the Eating Disorders in Youth-Questionnaire (EDY-Q) and population norms. METHOD: In a representative survey of the German population, N = 2,424 adults (1,297 women, 1,127 men; age 49.5 ± 17.5 years) were assessed with the EDY-Q and measures of eating disorder and general psychopathology for diverge

Anorexia nervosa and perfectionism: A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the multitude of research surrounding anorexia nervosa (AN) and perfectionism, there is yet to be a thorough investigation comparing perfectionism in those diagnosed with AN and other eating disorders, and other psychiatric diagnoses. The current meta-analysis aimed to explore these comparisons. METHOD: Following the Preferred Reporting Items or Systematic Reviews Meta Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we identified empirical studies that compared maladaptive and/or adaptive perfectionism scores in those diagnosed with AN and either a non-clinical comparison group, people diagn

Behavioral assessment of activity-based-anorexia: how cognition can become the drive wheel.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a disorder with a dramatic impact on both the individual and society. Besides severe weight loss, excessive physical exercise and cognitive disturbances can be present in patients with AN as primary symptoms of the pathology or as secondary effects induced by physical and metabolic alterations. Mechanistic research in this field has taken advantage of a well characterized animal model, the activity-based anorexia model (ABA). ABA rodents and subjects with AN show clear behavioral and physiological similarities, but a throughout neurocognitive assessment of the model is
