Histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4): a new player in anorexia nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and other eating disorders continue to constitute significant challenges for individual and public health. AN is thought to develop as a result of complex interactions between environmental triggers, psychological risk factors, sociocultural influences, and genetic vulnerability. Recent research developments have highlighted a novel potentially relevant component in the AN etiology-activity of the histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) gene that has emerged in several recent studies related to AN. HDAC4 is a member of the ubiquitously important family of epigenetic modifier enzyme

Individuals who self-identify as having "orthorexia nervosa" score in the clinical range on the Eating Attitudes Test-26.

PURPOSE: In recent years, there has been growing interest in pathologically healthful eating, often called orthorexia nervosa (ON). Much of the literature in this area has been about point prevalence of ON in particular populations, which range from less than 1% to nearly 90% depending on the study. Despite this interest, there has been no extensive examination of whether those with pathologically healthful eating are detected by screening instruments that identify disordered eating. This study examines whether individuals who self-report suffering from ON score in the clinical range on the 26

Association Between Maternal Feeding Practices and Symptoms of Anxiety and Depression Among 6-Year-Old Children.

BACKGROUND: Maternal feeding practices (MFPs) have been linked to childhood obesity and other eating disorders. However, population-based research examining the association between MFPs and children's emotional well-being is currently lacking. METHODS: We examined 1241 participants from Year 6 Follow-Up of the Infant Feeding Practices Study II, conducted from March to June 2012 in the United States. RESULTS: Approximately 57.5% and 47.8% of participants reported at least one symptom of childhood anxiety and depression, respectively. After adjusting for potential confounders, mothers who resp

Self-Help Treatment of Eating Disorders.

The authors provide an overview of the current state of research on self-help interventions for eating disorders. The efficacy of different forms of self-help interventions for bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other eating disorders at various stages of the care pathway (from prevention to relapse prevention) is described. Cost-effectiveness studies are also presented. Moderators of outcome, such as guidance and adherence, are discussed. Overall, the findings are promising and support the use of self-help interventions in the treatment of bulimic disorders, across the stages of the

Update on Binge Eating Disorder.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder and an important public health problem. Lifetime prevalence of BED in the United States is 2.6%. In contrast to other eating disorders, the female to male ratio in BED is more balanced. BED co-occurs with a plethora of psychiatric disorders, most commonly mood and anxiety disorders. BED is also associated with obesity and its numerous complications. Although BED is similar in men and women in presentation and treatment outcomes, there are some key neurobiological differences that should be taken in consideration when personalizing

Eating Behavior and the Evolutionary Perspective on Anorexia Nervosa.

On the standard perspective, anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders are caused by genetically determined, neurochemically mediated mental illnesses. Standard treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), targets cognitive processes thought to maintain the disorders. Effective neurochemically based treatments are not available and the rate of remission is ≤25% 1 year after CBT, with unknown outcomes in the long-term. With starvation as the major threat in biological history, the evolutionary perspective focuses on foraging for food and eating behavior. A neural network, including hypothal

Readability and quality of online eating disorder information-Are they sufficient? A systematic review evaluating websites on anorexia nervosa using DISCERN and Flesch Readability.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the quality and readability of United Kingdom-based websites on anorexia nervosa. METHOD: First-page search results of three search engines (with search term "anorexia nervosa") were consulted. Websites were excluded if they were pro-ana, duplications, advertisements, Wikipedia, nonwritten/video, invalid addresses, non-English, book links, articles/news pages, and discussion forums. Fifteen websites were evaluated on information quality using DISCERN, and on readability using the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) Scale. Spearman's correlations between quality and readability were

Emotion regulation difficulties, but not negative urgency, are associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and eating disorder symptoms in undergraduate students.

Eating disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly comorbid. The majority of research on this comorbidity has focused on impulsivity, which is a shared vulnerability between ADHD and eating disorders characterized by binge eating. Less is known about which shared factors may contribute to the co-occurrence of other eating disorders (i.e., anorexia nervosa, restricting subtype) and ADHD. Furthermore, little research has focused on other potential overlapping vulnerabilities, though deficits in emotion regulation have been implicated as an additional shared vulnerabi

Control of Eating Behavior Using a Novel Feedback System.

Subjects eat food from a plate that sits on a scale connected to a computer that records the weight loss of the plate during the meal and makes up a curve of food intake, meal duration and rate of eating modeled by a quadratic equation. The purpose of the method is to change eating behavior by providing visual feedback on the computer screen that the subject can adapt to because her/his own rate of eating appears on the screen during the meal. The data generated by the method is automatically analyzed and fitted to the quadratic equation using a custom made algorithm. The method has the advant

Bidirectional relationship between eating disorders and autoimmune diseases.

BACKGROUND: Immune system dysfunction may be associated with eating disorders (ED) and could have implications for detection, risk assessment, and treatment of both autoimmune diseases and EDs. However, questions regarding the nature of the relationship between these two disease entities remain. We evaluated the strength of associations for the bidirectional relationships between EDs and autoimmune diseases. METHODS: In this nationwide population-based study, Swedish registers were linked to establish a cohort of more than 2.5 million individuals born in Sweden between January 1, 1979 and Dec

Rigor and reproducibility in genetic research on eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: We explored both within-method and between-method rigor and reproducibility in the field of eating disorders genetics. METHOD: We present critical evaluation and commentary on component methods of genetic research (family studies, twin studies, molecular genetic studies) and discuss both successful and unsuccessful efforts in the field. RESULTS: Eating disorders genetics has had a number of robust results that converge across component methodologies. Familial aggregation of eating disorders, twin-based heritability estimates of eating disorders, and genome-wide association studies

[ARFID: food restriction without fear of weight gain].

Avoidant/restrictive food avoidance disorder, or ARFID, is characterized by restrictive eating or avoidance of food in the absence of the cognitive restraint and weight phobia typically seen in anorexia nervosa. It is often based on a general disinterest in eating, selective eating due to sensory preferences, and/or fear of adverse consequences such as choking, although the diagnostic criteria allow for a number of other clinical presentations. Patients with ARFID tend to be younger, more often male, and have a longer duration of illness compared to patients with other eating disorders. Delimi

Disentangling orthorexia nervosa from healthy eating and other eating disorder symptoms: Relationships with clinical impairment, comorbidity, and self-reported food choices.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is characterized by obsessions about eating healthily and rigid adherence to a perceived healthy diet. This study uses the Eating Habits Questionnaire to investigate the relationship of ON symptoms with self-reported food intake, eating-related impairment, obsessive compulsive disorder symptoms (OCD), gender, and BMI while controlling for other eating disordered symptoms. The aim of this study is to provide further evidence for the construct of ON as distinct from other forms of disordered eating. METHODS: The sample consisted of 449 adults recruited on Ama

Sagittal spinopelvic malalignment in degenerative scoliosis patients: isolated correction of symptomatic levels and clinical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: VEGF-targeted therapy has become the mainstay of treatment for majority of mRCC patients. For most patients, benefit is short-lived and therefore treatment remains palliative in intent. HD IL2 is an effective immunotherapy treatment capable of durable remission in some patients but its unselected use has been difficult due to its modest response rate and considerable adverse effects. Using set pathology criteria as a selection tool in clinical practice, we have been able to show improved outcomes in our previous report. Here, we present an updated and extended report of this treatm

Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among adult eating disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Very little is known about the prevalence of ADHD symptoms in Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder and even less in other eating disorders. This knowledge gap is of clinical importance since stimulant treatment is proven effective in Binge Eating Disorder and discussed as a treatment possibility for Bulimia Nervosa. The objective of this study was to explore the prevalence and types of self-reported ADHD symptoms in an unselected group of eating disorder patients assessed in a specialized eating disorder clinic. METHODS: In total 1165 adults with an eating disorder were asses

Effects of a food-specific inhibition training in individuals with binge eating disorder-findings from a randomized controlled proof-of-concept study.

PURPOSE: Impulsivity might contribute to the development and maintenance of obesity and eating disorders. Patients suffering from binge eating disorder (BED) show an impulsive eating pattern characterized by regular binge eating episodes. Novel behavioral interventions increasing inhibitory control could improve eating behavior in BED. We piloted a novel food-specific inhibition training in individuals with BED. METHODS: N = 22 BED patients according to SCID-I were randomly assigned to three sessions of a training or control condition. In both conditions, pictures of high-caloric food items w

Cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders versus normalization of eating behavior.

We examine the science and evidence supporting cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for the treatment of bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders. Recent trials focusing on the abnormal cognitive and emotional aspects of bulimia have reported a remission rate of about 45%, and a relapse rate of about 30% within one year. However, an early CBT trial that emphasized the normalization of eating behavior had a better outcome than treatment that focused on cognitive intervention. In support of this finding, another treatment, that restores a normal eating behavior using mealtime feedback, has an esti
