BACKGROUND: According to surveillance data, Campylobacter enteritis (CE) has been the most frequently notified bacterial gastrointestinal disease in Germany and Europe for many years. Presumably, the total number of cases is underestimated because an unknown number of cases is not diagnosed and some diagnosed cases are not reported in the surveillance system. The aim of this study was to estimate the disease and economic burden of CE and its related sequelae in Germany.
METHODS: The disability-adjusted life years (DALY) as well as the direct and indirect costs associated with the five-year (2

Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative bacterium which colonizes the intestinal tract of man and other animals. In addition to being a part of the normal bacterial flora of the human intestine, there are a number of enteropathogenic strains of E. coli which cause infections ranging in consequence from diarrhoea to colitis. Antigen 43 (Ag43) is the major phase-variable protein in the outer membrane of E. coli. One benefit for bacteria resulting from phase variation of surface antigens is usually ascribed to evasion of host defences. However, results of recent studies indicate that infection of E.

The Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a geographically widespread, popular game bird and conservation icon in North America. Following successful reestablishment in parts of the US and Canada, regional declines have fueled population health concerns; therefore, understanding mortality causes and spatiotemporal patterns of disease is important to uncover potential ongoing and future health risks. Histomonosis, caused by the trichomonad Histomonas meleagridis, is a well-established and potentially fatal disease in Wild Turkeys; however, its prevalence and potential population health impacts r

BACKGROUND: F plasmids are abundant in E. coli, carrying a variety of genetic cargo involved in fitness, pathogenicity, and antimicrobial resistance. ColV and pUTI89-like plasmids have drawn attention for their potential roles in various forms of extra-intestinal pathogenicity. However, the rates of their carriage and the overall diversity of F plasmids in E. coli bloodstream infections (BSI E. coli) remain unknown.
METHODS: We performed a t-SNE-based cluster analysis of predicted F plasmids from a collection of 4711 BSI E. coli draft genomes to describe their diversity and abundance. We also

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of increasing levels of a microencapsulated blend of botanicals (MBB) on the intestinal health and growth performance of nursery pigs challenged with F18+E. coli. Sixty-four nursery pigs (6.8 ± 0.3 kg) were assigned to 4 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design, with initial body weight and sex as blocks, and fed for 28 d in 3 phases. Treatments were a basal diet fed to pigs without F18+E. coli challenge (NC) and 3 levels of MBB (0.0%, 0.1%, and 0.2%) in pigs challenged with F18+E. coli. On day 7 of the study, pigs in the challenged group

BACKGROUND: Promoting resistance to enteric pathogen infection is a core function of the gut microbiota; however, many of the specific host-commensal interactions that mediate this protection remain uncharacterised. To address this knowledge gap, we monocolonised germ-free mice with mouse-derived commensal microbes to screen for microbiota-induced resistance to Salmonella Typhimurium infection.
RESULTS: We identified Enterocloster clostridioformis as a protective species against S. Typhimurium infection. E. clostridioformis selectively upregulates resistin-like molecule β and cell cycle pathw

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are potential alternatives to antibiotics given the reduced likelihood of resistance and their high selectivity towards bacteria. AMPs with activity against antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been reported. The aim of this study is to characterize the activity of novel BP100 analogues against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Eleven bacterial strains representing five pathogenic species were used to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of 26 peptides. An initial screen was performed at 50 µg/ml, and those peptides that inhibited ≈90 % of growth of all strains were sele

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a zoonotic foodborne pathogen responsible for different cases and outbreaks of severe enteric diseases in humans worldwide. Our group previously showed that Argentine O22:H8 isolates (155 and 182) interfere with the colonization of O157:H7 in an experimental infection bovine model. In this study, we applied a comparative genomic and genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis to explore the differences between the genetic bases of O22:H8 and O157:H7 strains isolated from cattle. The whole-genome sequence of O22:H8 155 and 182 isolates was comp

E. coli pathotypes, which cause extra-intestinal infections, pose significant public health challenges, emphasizing the need for virulence gene surveillance to understand their dynamics. Key virulence genes have been identified in E. coli from Andean community countries, predominantly linked to human and animal sources. However, detailed data on virulence profiles from environmental and food sources remain limited. This study utilized an in silico approach to analyze 2402 whole-genome sequences from EnteroBase, known for associations with antimicrobial resistance genes. Of the isolates, 30% we

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli O104:H4 is best known for causing a worldwide outbreak in 2011 due to the acquisition of a Shiga-like toxin alongside traditional enteroaggregative virulence traits; however, whilst the 2011 outbreak strain has been well studied, the virulence plasmid of O104:H4 has been subjected to far less experimental analysis. In this paper, we analyse the genetic and phenotypic contribution of the pAA virulence plasmid to a non-Shigatoxigenic O104:H4 strain (1070/13) that was nonetheless implicated in a substantial UK outbreak in 2013. We find that pAA1070 is 99.95% ide

Gastrointestinal infections represent a significant global health burden, ranking as the second leading cause of mortality among infants and children. Identifying of pathogens causing neonatal gastrointestinal infections has presented tough challenges. This study aimed to summarize the prevalence of common pathogens associated with neonatal gastrointestinal infections through a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature. The last search was performed on January 08, 2025, from databases including EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Libary, and Web of Science. The outcome var

Focal duodenal necrosis (FDN) is an intestinal disease causing significant economic losses in the table-egg industry due to reduced egg production in laying hens. Its etiology and pathogenesis remain poorly understood. Between 2021 and 2023, 111 Escherichia coli isolates were collected from FDN lesions and screened for the presence of virulence genes using PCR panels. Five strains-FDN-4, FDN-9, FDN-11, FDN-24, and FDN-50-were selected for whole-genome sequencing due to their high virulence gene content. Core-genome analyses found that the five FDN E. coli belong to different phylogroups and st

Escherichia coli is a commensal of the intestine of most mammals, but also an important human pathogen. Within a healthy human its population structure is highly dynamic, where typically a dominant E. coli strain is accompanied by several low abundance satellite strains. However, the factors underlying E. coli strain dynamics and evolution within hosts are still poorly understood. Here, we colonised germ-free immune-competent (wild-type) or immune-compromised (Rag2KO) mice, with two phylogenetically distinct strains of E. coli, to determine if strain co-existence and within-strain evolution ar

INTRODUCTION: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), a subclinical intestinal disorder, is characterized by chronic fecal-oral exposure to entero-pathogens and could be diagnosed by measuring non-invasive biomarkers. Escherichia coli is the one of the key bacterial enteric pathogens that drives EED, but there is a lack of information on the E. coli pathotypes in relation to the biomarkers of EED in malnourished adults. Here, we intended to measure the possible association of these pathotypes with EED biomarkers and nutritional status of adults residing in a slum in Bangladesh.

The high prevalence of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in nondiarrheic piglets contributes to its rapid spread; however, few studies have explored the effects of latent gastrointestinal pathogens on animal health. Therefore, using high-throughput sequencing approaches, we explored changes in entero-pulmonary microbiota and immune gene expression in healthy, asymptomatic, and diarrheic piglets. As expected, bacterial communities were less diverse in the respiratory tract than in the gut, with a site-specific composition that was more stable in the gut and highly variable in the lung amo
