Daytime Performance in Insomnia Patients.

Patients suffering from Nonorganic Insomnia (NI) are burdened by significant subjective daytime impairments which contribute to the reduction of quality of life for the patients and lead to greater healthcare utilization and increased indirect costs. Besides being central to diagnosis, operationalized criteria for daytime symptoms are lacking and data remain heterogeneous, especially regarding objectively measurable deficits. This study examines daytime performance in 329 NI patients through neuropsychological testing as well as self-report questionnaires, and correlates the results with polys

Vividness of visual imagery is associated with the effect of relaxation response meditation training in elderly people with nonorganic insomnia: A randomized, double-blind, multi-center clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the efficacy of Relaxation Response Meditation Training (RRMT) on elderly individuals with different levels of vividness of visual imagery. METHODS: In this randomized controlled, double-blind, multi-center clinical trial, we recruited a total of 136 elderly individuals who were over 60 years with nonorganic sleep disorders to participate in a 4-week RRMT intervention from October 2020 to October 2022. The intervention occurred twice a week, totaling eight times. These individuals were divided into high and low groups based on the vividness of visual ima

Work-related burn injuries and claims for post-traumatic stress disorder in Korea.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to broaden our understanding of psychiatric disorders due to work-related burn injury compensated by the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance operated by the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service (KCOMWEL). METHODS: Using the KCOMWEL electronic database, we collected data on psychiatric disorders due to work-related burn injury based on workers' compensation records from 2005 to 2014 and analyzed the characteristics of the claims. RESULTS: The average number of claims per year for post-traumatic stress disorder was 67 and the approval

Salivary Duct Carcinoma of Parotid Gland: a Rare Tumor.

UNLABELLED: Background Natural disasters have a significant impact on the mental health of affected populations, particularly children and young people. The reported risks have become more severe as environmental and climate challenges increase. Thus, it is imperative to identify vulnerable groups to design early warning and effective interventions. This study aimed to synthesize evidence on how natural disasters affect the mental health of young people (aged 15-24 years) and to explore factors influencing their vulnerability and resilience. Methods Four databases, namely PubMed, PsycINFO, SCO

Trends in prescriptions for sedative-hypnotics among Korean adults: a nationwide prescription database study for 2011-2015.

PURPOSE: This study investigated prescriptions for sedative-hypnotics via data obtained from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) service. METHODS: Data on sedative-hypnotic prescriptions from the HIRA service of the Republic of Korea were analyzed from 2011 to 2015. We included prescriptions for subjects > 18 years of age from hospitals and community healthcare centers. In addition, subgroup analyses with a subsample restricted to prescriptions from patients with diagnostic codes F510 (nonorganic insomnia) or G470 (insomnia) were performed. After analyzing the number of prescrip

[Cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic insomnia].

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-I) in chronic insomnia treatment. METHOD: 236 patients with ICD- 10 nonorganic insomnia were assigned to group CBT-I (6 sessions, 6-10 patients). From this pool, 72 participants with no history of other psychiatric or sleep disorders conditions were selected. Eventually, 51 patients (40 female, mean age: 54.6+/-13.9y, mean insomnia duration: 7+/-6.3y) and 51 matched healthy controls (mean age: 55.4+/-14.3y) completed the study. Insomnia in somatoform pain disorder: sleep laboratory studies on differences to controls and acute effects of trazodone, evaluated by the Somnolyzer 24 x 7 and the Siesta database.

Patients with chronic pain often suffer from sleep disturbances, specifically decreased deep sleep, and thus may get into a vicious circle which maintains their pain condition. Utilizing polysomnography and psychometry, objective and subjective sleep and awakening quality was investigated in 11 patients with nonorganic insomnia (F51.0) related to somatoform pain disorder (SPD; F45.4) as compared with age- and sex-matched healthy controls of the Siesta normative database. Patients demonstrated a markedly deteriorated Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, a decreased Quality of Life Index, slightly in

On the pharmacotherapy of sleep bruxism: placebo-controlled polysomnographic and psychometric studies with clonazepam.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep bruxism (SB) is a parasomnia defined as a stereotyped movement disorder characterized by grinding or clenching of the teeth during sleep. Pathophysiologically, SB is the result of biological and psychosocial influences. Treatment comprises behavioral, orthodontic and pharmacological interventions. While benzodiazepines and muscle relaxants have been reported by clinicians to reduce bruxism-related motor activity, placebo-controlled studies are lacking. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the acute effects of clonazepam (Rivotril) as compared with placebo, ut

Sleep in young adults with Asperger syndrome.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder belonging to autism spectrum disorders. Both children and adults with AS have subjective impairment in the initiation and continuity of sleep, and studies using objective assessment are sparse. Twenty young AS adults with frequent complaints of low sleep quality were compared to 10 age-, gender- and education-matched controls without sleep complaints using polysomnography and spectral power analysis of slow-wave sleep. AS subjects displayed a similar polysomnographic profile as compared with controls. In spectral power analysis, a statist

Quality of life in nonorganic and organic sleep disorders: I. Comparison with normative data.

Subjective health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was investigated in 100 patients with disturbed sleep (39 women aged 52 +/- 13 years and 61 men aged 53 +/- 10 years) referred to the sleep laboratory and compared with HRQoL in 100 normal healthy adults. Measurements included the Quality of Life Index (QLI) (Mezzich and Cohen), and objective (polysomnographic) and subjective (psychometric) quality of sleep and awakening. Statistical analysis (Mann-Whitney U-test) showed HRQoL to be significantly reduced in sleep disorders (SDs), with a more pronounced reduction in nonorganic than in organic SD

Quality of life in nonorganic and organic sleep disorders: II. Correlation with objective and subjective quality of sleep and awakening.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study of 100 patients suffering from sleep-disorders was to determine correlations between their subjective health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and objective variables in sleep initiation and maintenance, sleep architecture, objective quality of awakening, psychophysiological parameters and subjective quality of sleep and awakening. METHODS: Objective measurements were obtained from overnight diagnostic polysomnography. Subjective HRQoL was determined from the Quality of Life Index (QLI, Mezzich and Cohen) completed prior to the adaptation night. Other measur

The diagnostic validity of the Athens Insomnia Scale.

OBJECTIVE: To provide documentation for the diagnostic validity of the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), a self-assessment psychometric tool which has previously shown high consistency, reliability and external validity for the evaluation of the intensity of sleep difficulty. METHODS: The AIS was administered to a total of 299 subjects (105 primary insomniacs, 100 psychiatric outpatients, 44 psychiatric inpatients and 50 nonpatient controls) who were also assessed for the ICD-10 diagnosis of "nonorganic insomnia" blindly in terms of the AIS scores. In the present double-blind, parallel-group study, hypnotic and anxiolytic effects of SOM were studied in 44 patients with non-organic insomnia related to mild generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), as compared with LOR alone.
